History:

(Nomad II#12 (fb) - BTS) - Martin Elliot secured himself a popular late night radio show with station KRSH in Fort Worth, Texas. It had proven so popular within a conservative community that there were suggestions of his show going national. He advocated a one-sided viewpoint against gays, stereotyping them with being afflicted with AIDS, and encouraged bloody violence against them. He was an advocate of violent homophobic hate group, the Clean Community Commandos (CCC), and would receive advance warning from them of their attacks, as well as from the AIDS hospice, the Betterdon Center, when they were attacked by the CCC.

(Nomad II#12) - The Roar's show calling for gays to be bashed was broadcast as a mob brutally assaulted a lone man (labeled as "queer" by the mob) until Nomad intervened and dispersed the attackers. After speaking with several Undergrounders about the Roar, Nomad, posing as a reporter, confronted Elliot at the KRSH studios. While claiming he didn't care who he influenced by his broadcasts, Elliot nevertheless advocated the civil exclusion of people with AIDS. Without realizing it, Elliot had the support of Hate Monger (Animus), a being who fed on hate and anger, and could amplify these emotions.

(Nomad II#12 (fb) - BTS) - Over the next few days, the Roar warned listeners of the interfering long-haired reporter (actually Nomad) and received advanced notice from the CCC about an impending attack on the hospice.

(Nomad II#12) - The Roar railed against the Betterdon Center being allowed by the courts to continue to operate and announced the CCC's attack against the hospice. His radio show was being played by both sides, inflaming the situation, until Nomad realized Elliot's collusion with those involved. Nomad smashed his way into the Roar's studios and Elliot admitted on air what was going on. Off air, Elliot threatened to stymie council support for the hospice's public funding, intending to fuel further antagonism. Frustrated, Nomad punched Elliot powerfully in the jaw, breaking it, to stop him talking for a while.

Elliot's broadcast admission led to him being investigated by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission). Concerned that Elliot would press charges against him and thereby negatively impact the Betterdon Center, Nomad left Fort Worth.

Comments: Created by Fabian Nicieza (writer), Pat Olliffe (pencils) and Mark McKenna (inks).

The story closed with Nomad passing a newspaper headlining new cases of heterosexuals contracting AIDS.

Elliot's homophobic broadcasts, while not immediately violent, had lethal consequences. This remains relevant today.

The Clean Community Commandos' initials of CCC could be seen to parallel those of white supremacist organization, the Ku Klux Klan, or KKK, which incorporates similarly homophobic viewpoints.

CLARIFICATIONS :
The Roar has no known connections to:

Clean Community Commandos

Clean Community Commandos

The Clean Community Commandos (CCC) were a group of armed and violent conservatives, chiefly male, based in Colleyville, Fort Worth. They were fans of the Roar's radio show and his firebrand rhetoric, and would target individual gays for bashing, as well as care centers in deliberate efforts at confrontation. While fueled by Elliot's radio diatribe, they would also advise him of upcoming attacks, thereby contributing to events reported by Elliot's show.

Nomad intervened during one attack by the CCC against the Betterdon Center, shooting out the wheel of the vehicle carrying CCC members and fighting them. However, one CCC man broke past and ran toward the line of people defending the Center, but they dealt out the same violence that the CCC had already delivered in the past. Nomad again intervened and halted the fighting, but heard the the Roar broadcasting over the radio the events as they occurred. Nomad then realized that Elliot had been receiving advance notice from the CCC of the violence.
