History:
(Journey into Unknown Worlds#42 - BTS) - The newly charted planet Afra II which orbited closely to its star was home to a race of non-corporeal mist-like lifeforms. The planet had a gaseous atmosphere and extreme temperatures that were too hot for physical plants and animals to evolve. It also had a gravity slightly less than Earth's.

(Journey into Unknown Worlds#42) - Sometime in the distant future, Afra II, an uncharted planet close to a sun was home to a race of non-corporeal mist like entities. The planet was approached and surveyed by an Earth exploration ship seeking new life forms in outer space.

(Journey into Unknown Worlds#42) - Landing on the planet, one of the ship's crew, Donner, exited the craft wearing a space suit to protect him from the intense heat from the nearby sun in search of mineral and vegetation samples as well as any other forms of life that may be present. The native lifeform(s), being non-human and lonely, sensed Donner's thoughts and wishing to make contact, appeared to the man as a village. Sensing that he was not alone, Donner was unable to detect any signs of life or that the village was trying to communicate with him. Feeling the effects from the planet's intense heat, Donner then made his way back to his ship and quickly left the planet believing the village he saw was only a mirage. As the ship departed the lonely "village" cried.

The alien race was never given a name but were referred to as "watchers" by Donner who felt them but was unable to detect them. Afran mistforms make better sense for a name. Earth space exploration at this point (according to the story) has not successfully found new life on planets outside the solar system, only ancient and extinct ones on Mars, Venus and Saturn. The story was basically a morality play about loneliness and the difficulty people have communicating due to lack of knowledge or understanding and as a society, we seem to be narrowminded with our rigid perception of things and often fail to comprehend or see the obvious. Afra II was not the name of the planet, rather the designation given to the world by its orbit around the star Afra. This would place it as being the second planet closest to Afra.

Afran Mistforms have no known connections to:

Earth Exploration Ship Captain

(Journey into Unknown Worlds#42) - No name given. Ordered Floyd the helmsman to make orbit around the nightside area of the planet Afra II. He chose crewman Donner for a mission to bring back mineral or plant and animal samples and before leaving, he should read up on his space manual about detecting alien lifeforms that may not be readily detected as such by the untrained observer. He also explained that Earth exploration vessels were charged with contacting alien life if found-which has not been successful, ever since ancient extinct humanoid civilizations were found on Mars and other planets.

Donner

(Journey into Unknown Worlds#42) - Donner served aboard an Earth exploration ship with a small crew and happened upon a small unexplored planet close to its sun. The captain chose Donner to make a short trip to the planet to pick up possible plant and mineral specimens and told him to read up on the space manual to refresh his ability to detect alien lifeforms that may not be clear to the untrained observer. Landing on the planet, Donner, exited the craft wearing a space suit to protect himself from the intense heat from nearby sun in search of mineral and vegetation samples as well as any other forms of life that may be present.
