History

(Avengers I#48) – J. B. Desalvio visited a Las Vegas casino, where he used a magnet to affect the outcome of the roulette wheel. After winning five times in a row, fellow roulette table patron Janet Van Dyne began to suspect Desalvio of cheating. When Hank Pym received an Avengers distress call, Janet informed Pym of her suspicions. Investigating at insect size, the two Avengers discovered a magnetic device in Desalvio’s pocket that allowed Desalvio to affect the outcome of the wheel. Goliath then controlled a group of ants to secretly remove the device from Desalvio’s pocket. Just as Desalvio realized his device was missing, the wheel landed on 16 despite Desalvio’s betting on 11. Upon losing, J. B. Desalvio left the roulette table as the nearby Mr. Philbert won.

Philbert & WilmaPhilbert and Wilma

Philbert and Wilma were patrons of the Las Vegas casino where J. B. Desalvio was cheating. Unaware of Desalvio’s cheating, Philbert was shocked to see that Desalvio had won five times in a row. When Goliath and Wasp secretly had ants removed Desalvio’s magnetic device from his pocket, Wilma commented that there were ants on the roulette wheel. Hoping that might be good luck, Philbert bet his money on 16 and sure enough, the roulette ball did land on 16, much to Desalvio’s surprise. Happy to see Desalvio lose, Wasp exclaimed “he did it!” and Philbert reminded her that he had bet on 16, meaning that he had won and wondered why Wasp was so happy, considering that she had lost again.
