History:

(Rawhide Kid I#22/1 (fb) - BTS) - Ben Bragg was made foreman of a silver mine and violently bullied workers to mine in unsafe conditions. He illegally blasted too deep and unwittingly released the Living Totem.

(Rawhide Kid I#22/1) - Escaping from a sheriff's posse, Rawhide Kid sought to hide at the mine by becoming a worker there. Although violently turned away by Ben Bragg, Rawhide Kid was employed when another worker, Seth Crane, collapsed from unsafe conditions with no sympathy from Bragg. Down the in the mines, the Living Totem went on a rampage; a fleeing worker and local Injun Tom alerted Bragg, who instead forced them down to investigate with him. They saw the Rawhide Kid fighting the Living Totem and fled. Calling workers to run away, Bragg tried to shoot the Kid for wanting to stay and fight the creature, but Bragg was stopped by the newly arrived sheriff. The Living Totem emerged and trapped them in the cave behind a big rock. Bragg blamed the Kid and derided the sheriff for letting the small-framed outlaw out a hole to help them escape. After eliminating the threat of the Living Totem, Rawhide Kid returned and blasted free the sheriff and Bragg. Impressed by Rawhide Kid's integrity, the sheriff let the outlaw go and instead arrested Bragg for illegally mining too deeply.
