POLTERGEIST

Classification: Terrestrial humanoids

Location/Base of Operations: International

Known Members: None named

Affiliations: None

First Appearance: Tales to Astonish I#1/2 (January, 1959)

Powers/Abilities: Poltergeist were invisible to humans, either by will or natural state.

Traits: Poltergeist were very mischievous by nature, creating noises and disturbances to frighten humans, particularly in their own houses. They seemed to dwell in certain houses, regardless of how many residents passed through.

History:

(Tales to Astonish I#1/2 (fb) - BTS) - Poltergeist engaged in mischief and pranks to scare humans around the world. One Poltergeist assumed the identity of a human investigator of such supposedly paranormal activities, especially those occurring in houses. However, in order to cover up Poltergeist activity, he instead fabricated reasons for the Poltergeist's mischief by claiming that noises were coming from the house settling, water pipes, weak walls holding up pictures that later fell, and so on.

(Tales to Astonish I#1/2) - The Poltergeist investigator's most recent case was for Larry and Rita Winters, newlyweds who had renovated an old dilapidated house; however, they were plagued by increasing unusual and semi-destructive behavior, such as lamps breaking or pictures falling. Hearing of the strange happenings, the investigator arrived and later presented a range of reasons to the couple. Although convinced, they felt uncomfortable and chose to move away, selling the house to the investigator. Happy that he had deceived more residents of Poltergeist activity by apparently disproving the existence of the prankish spirits, he pulled off his mask as other Poltergeist danced and threw about furniture.

The main image reveals them to be distinctly satyr-like in appearance. It could be argued that the Poltergeist were an offshoot/subgroup of satyrs.

This story was reprinted in Uncanny Tales#6/3 (October, 1974), which is where the images are from.
