History: (Uncanny X-Men at the State Fair of Texas (fb)) - The man who would father Daniel Wiley was a government scientist. After an unspecified accident, the man retired and moved to the outskirts of Dallas, Texas, where he started a ranch. Daniel was born and raised at the ranch. He grew up raising horses and felt a kinship with them. When his mutant powers manifested, Daniel would sneak into the fields to run with the horses and fly above them.

(Uncanny X-Men at the State Fair of Texas) - The X-Men's leader Professor X (through Cerebro) and his rival Magneto both learned of Daniel's existence. Magneto tracked the boy down first, finding him tending stables at the State Fair. Magneto revealed he knew Daniel's secret and plotted to coax the boy to join his Brotherhood of Mutants. The X-Men arrived at the Fair and quickly located the two, but Magneto led Daniel to believe the X-Men were the real threat and were there to abduct Daniel. Daniel - dubbed Eques by Magneto - transformed and the two engaged the X-Men in fighting until Magneto's apathy towards endangering the animals in the stable convinced Eques that Magneto was the true villain. Turning on his would-be master, Eques joined the X-Men in striking down Magneto. Afterward, Professor X invited Eques to join the X-Men, but he declined, wishing instead to remain in Dallas with his beloved horses.

This comic was included as an advertising supplement in editions of the Dallas Times Herald and possibly other newspapers.

At the end, Magneto was finally taken down when Big Tex - the oversized mascot statue of the State Fair - "kicked" him. The X-Men assumed it was the result of their powers causing the statue to shift, but the story left doubt that perhaps there was more to Big Tex than revealed.

Obviously, it's implied that the unspecified accident that Daniel's father suffered is what resulted in Daniel being born a mutant.

Despite being a promotional piece, there is nothing in the story to keep it from being Earth-616. Copyright indicia states that all characters are the property of Marvel.
