History:

(The Savage Axe of Ares#1/2 (fb) - BTS) - D'Keigh served as the King's wizard for a long time, finally weakening the god of war Ares with a spell when the god rampaged through the kingdom amid intense battles. Ares was imprisoned. The King's daughter, the Princess, was ambitious and sought to kill her father. D'Keigh  agreed to side with her, but had his own secret agenda, intending to sacrifice her to the serpentine Hellbeast. D'Keigh and the Princess fled to the Cursed Mountains where they were protected by the wizard's undead legion. D'Keigh's weakening spell on Ares dissipated when he left. At his lair, D'Keigh was able to overcome the Princess and chained her deep below for the Hellbeast.

(The Savage Axe of Ares#1/2) - Ares was freed by the King, charged to rescue his daughter and bring back the head of the wizard. Ares quickly reached D'Keigh's hideaway and overcame his demonic guards, finding him underground next to the chained Princess and separated by a deep chasm from which the Hellbeast sprung. Ares jumped on the giant snake and threw his massive double-bladed axe behind him at D'Keigh. The weapon cut deep into the wizard's head and he died instantly. Victorious, Ares severed the head of D'Keigh and returned it and the Princess to the King,

The story is set: "Once upon a time, when gods still roamed the earth..." So you can choose somewhen between the Hyborian and Post-Hyborian Eras (although the giant beast and the Princess' armored bikini does suggest Hyborian). The architecture suggests something like Babylonian.

Wish they'd named the King and Princess.

"The Savage Axe of Ares#1" harks back to Marvel's "Savage Sword of Conan" series (also B&W).

CLARIFICATIONS :
D'Keigh has no known connections to:

Hellbeast

Hellbeast

The Hellbeast was a giant, horned serpent that lived far underground. Presumably to gain more power, D'Keigh set about to sacrifice the Princess to it so that she could be its consort. Ares intervened before this could happen. Finding the Hellbeast heavily armored, the god of war strangled it to death.
