History:  (Avengers I#179 (fb)) - The man who would become the Teacher was a reputed geneticist who, in an effort to create a new race of humanity, experimented on his own pregnant wife. His wife died during a childbirth and their child was horribly mutated due to the experiments he had caused. The geneticist then began calling himself the Teacher and raised his son, called Bloodhawk, telling Bloodhawk that "his father" had left him in his care. For Bloodhawk's safety, the Teacher moved them both to the small South Seas island of Maura, where Bloodhawk grew up in a cage due to his periodic bouts of insanity.

(Avengers I#179) - When the "He Who Protects" totem was taken from the island of Maura, Bloodhawk and the Teacher came to America seeking aid but Bloodhawk quickly went into one of his bouts with insanity and instead attacked the art exhibit where the totem was being kept. The Avengers eventually subdued Bloodhawk and the Teacher attempted to explain their cause for being there. They all decided to take the discussion to Avengers Mansion in an effort to calm the situation that Bloodhawk had started at the museum. Once there, the Teacher explained the origin of Bloodhawk. The Avengers eventually decided to help Bloodhawk and the Teacher return the totem to its place in Maura and divided the team in half, with half remaining at the Mansion and the other half helping Bloodhawk. As Thor, Vision, Beast, Bloodhawk, and the Teacher arrived at Maura, they witnessed part of the island transforming the monstrous Monolith.

(Avengers I#180) - As the Beast helped rescue some escaping islanders, the Teacher contemplated about how to use to the totem to halt the Monolith. Unfortunately, Bloodhawk soon suffered yet another bout with madness and crazily grabbed the totem from the Teacher's grasp, escaping from the Quinjet with it. Beast and the Teacher followed close behind, where the Teacher explained to Beast that the totem needed to placed back in its original position to immobilize the Monolith. Once the Beast did so, the Monolith was stopped and returned to its original form. After the battle, the Beast offered Bloodhawk a place in America with Professor X, and Bloodhawk and the Teacher soon joined the small group of Avengers in returning to New York. When they arrived, Vision was ambushed by the Stinger, who had captured the Avengers that had stayed behind. Despite the Teacher's warnings, Bloodhawk jumped into battle to aid his newfound friends, but was blasted by the Stinger while trying to protect Thor. Once the Stinger was defeated, the Teacher revealed his true identity when the dying Bloodhawk asked if his father would be proud of him. The Teacher told Bloodhawk that yes, he was proud and that he loved him.
