MER-MUTANTS

Membership: None named

Purpose: To survive underwater by preying on others

Affiliations: Lemurians

Enemies: Atlanteans, Lorvex, Sub-Mariner

Base of Operations: Mobile underwater near Atlantis and Lemuria

First Appearance: Sub-Mariner#54 (October, 1972)

Powers/Abilities: The Mer-Mutants each possessed the ability to breathe and speak underwater and survive on the bottom of the ocean. Each Mer-Mutant possessed a different mutation: the female Mer-Mutant had the lower torso of a fish, making her resemble a mermaid. The male Mer-Mutants resembled an octopus, a frog, a hammerhead shark, and fish.

History: (Sub-Mariner#54/2 (fb) - BTS) - The Mer-Mutants were "tragic accidents of tide-crossed birth," and were outcasts among the other undersea civilizations. They banded together for protection, and scavenged the seas together. They formed a minor alliance with undersea Lemuria, seeking food from them.

(Sub-Mariner#54/2) - The Mer-Mutants encountered Namor the Sub-Mariner as he swam through their area, and the female Mer-Mutant distracted him with her beauty. When he swam after her, the other Mer-Mutants attacked him, hoping to trade him to Lemuria for food, but Namor defeated them all single-handed. He confronted the female Mer-Mutant and offered her and her "brothers" the protection of Atlantis, but two of his guards arrived, led by Lorvex to find him. The other Atlanteans were about to attack the female, but Namor ordered them to put down their weapons. Seeing the bigotry of Lorvex towards them, the Mer-Mutants decided they would not be welcome in Atlantis, and swam off to continue their life of exile.
