Powers/Abilities: Red Hargrove was a hotshot pilot who prided himself on his daredevil stunt tricks. He was also a terrific fighter in hand-to-hand and armed combat.

History: (Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos#7 (fb)) - Red Hargrove grew up in Hell's Kitchen alongside Nick Fury. The two of them became best friends, and Red's older brother Lewis watched their participation at his church with pride. Red had been a troubled youth before he met Fury, but Fury helped make him a better man.

(Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos#34 (fb)) <1940> - Fury and Hargrove put together enough money to buy their own plane, and set themselves up as stunt fliers, performing tricks for audiences. When the duo came over to England just for tourism's sake, they wound up being roped in by the British to train parachuters. Red took to smoking his cigarettes in a cigarette holder because he saw a picture of President Franklin D. Roosevelt using one, and idolized him.

(Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos#34 (fb)) <1940, May 10> - While working for the British, Fury and Hargrove met the American Lt. Samuel Sawyer, who Red nicknamed "Happy Sam," a nickname that lived on for decades. Sawyer wound up recruting them to aid in the rescue of a British agent from Holland, mainly needing them to fly him to Holland in Hargrove's plane. When they caught sight of the agent's car they tried to land their plane, but crashed. The "agent" they met up with was actually an agent of the Gestapo, who evaded them. Forced to travel by foot across Holland, the trio ran into a traveling circus which included strongman Timothy "Dum-Dum" Dugan. When they learned he was American they befriended him, and he helped them travel to the coast. Along the way, Fury found the real agent they had been sent to find, and they managed to escape Holland in a boat, then met up with a British patrol boat that brought them back to England. Hargrove resolved after this that he would join up to fight for his country.

(Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos#7 (fb) - BTS/Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos#34 (fb)) <1941, December 7> - Red was serving his country at Pearl Harbour when it was attacked by the Japanese on December 7, 1941. Red was killed, and his death prompted Fury to become a commando.
