First Appearance: What If? II#110 (July, 1998)

History: (What If? II#110 (fb)) - When Charles Xavier came to the U. S. S. R. to recruit Piotr Rasputin into the X-Men, his discussion with Piotr's parents was interrupted when a farmer on the Rasputin collective yelled about Piotr's younger sister, Illyana. Piotr rushed outside, transforming into his metallic form, where he found that his sister had been struck down by a runaway tractor. He blamed Charles Xavier for distracting him from his work and explained that if Xavier had not kept him away from the fields, he would have been present to save Illyana.

(What If? II#110 (fb)) - Now a member of the Soviet Super-Soldiers, Colossus watched in horror as the threat of a possessed Phoenix threatened his country. Col. Yuri Brevlov soon arrived and explained to Piotr Rasputin that Phoenix had been possessed by the mutant known as Proteus, who could manipulate reality itself. In Edinburgh, Scotland, the X-Men battled the Proteus-possessed Phoenix with all of their strength. While they battled, Professor X felt a telepathic distress call all the way from Earth and asked the Shi'Ar Empress Lilandra where the nearest teleporter was. At the same time, Col. Brevlov briefed the Soviet Super-Soldiers on their upcoming battle with Proteus. During the briefing, a fight erupted between Ursa Major and the Crimson Dynamo, which was broken up when Darkstar teleported the team to Edinburgh, Scotland to battle Proteus.

In Edinburgh, the X-Men were failing to stop the rampaging Proteus, when the Soviet Super-Soldiers arrived and jumped into battle. Darkstar wrapped the possessed Phoenix in Darkforce energy while the Crimson Dynamo blasted her. When Vanguard jumped in to attack, he and the possessed Phoenix were psychically frozen by the arrival of Professor Charles Xavier. Moira then explained to the Soviet Super-Soldiers and the X-Men that Proteus's only weakness was inorganic metal, and that they may have to kill Proteus to stop him. Professor X argued that even if Moira was prepared to sacrifice her son, he was not prepared to sacrifice the life of Phoenix, whom Proteus was possessing. Colossus then questioned Xavier about the death of his sister, Illyana. Colossus then blamed Xavier for his sister's death until Storm broke up his argument with Xavier via a lightning bolt, reminding them that Cyclops needed medical attention. Xavier chose that time to bring Colossus onto the psychic plane, where he told Colossus that he was not responsible for Illyana's death. He then explained that her death was an accident and that it would both of their faults if they did not save Phoenix. Colossus agreed to listen and moments later, Xavier offered himself to Proteus as a powerful psychic host body. Proteus quickly left Phoenix's body and entered Xavier's, warning that if Xavier pushed Proteus out of his mind, then he would kill Phoenix. As Proteus boasted about his newfound power, Colossus leapt at him. The possessed Charles Xavier quickly turned and cut off Colossus's arm. Piotr then got up and used his own severed arm to impale the body of Professor Charles Xavier, effectively destroying Proteus.

(What If? II#110) - Decades after his battle with Proteus, Piotr had taken to painting and had raised a family: his wife, Laynia Petrovna (formerly known as Darkstar) and his daughter, Illyana. While working on a painting, he reminisced of his younger days until Laynia arrived bringing dinner to him. Illyana soon followed, pointing out that Piotr had paint all over him.

COLOSSUS

Piotr Rasputin was a young mutant boy working on a Russian farm collective until Charles Xavier arrived and asked him to join the X-Men in America. While speaking with Xavier, Piotr's sister, Illyana was killed in an accident involving a runaway tractor. Blaming Xavier for her death, Colossus refused his offer and instead, used his powers for the good of Russian as a member of the Soviet Super-Soldiers. Falling in love with fellow team member Darkstar, Piotr took the name Colossus and joined the Super-Soldiers in battling the escaped mutant Proteus, who had possessed the body of the X-Man Phoenix. Soon after the Super-Soldiers arrived, Professor X also arrived and explained to Colossus that his sister's death was not his fault. Xavier managed to convince Colossus to aid him in a plan to stop Proteus. Offering his body as a host to Proteus, Professor X became possessed by the reality-altering mutant and cut off Colossus's arm. In order to stop Proteus, Colossus impaled Xavier with his own severed, metallic arm. Years later, Piotr settled down with Darkstar and they had a daughter, Illyana.

PROFESSOR X

During a time when Professor Charles Xavier thought his students in the X-Men were killed by Magneto, he travelled into space to be with his beloved Lilandra, Empress of the Shi'Ar. While in space, Xavier was telepathically contacted by his student Phoenix, who had become possessed by the escaped mutant Proteus. Returning to Earth to aid her, Xavier met with a one-time possible recruit Colossus and explained that he was not responsible for the death of Colossus's sister, as Colossus had accused him of being. He then explained to Colossus a plan to stop Proteus and Colossus agreed to help. Xavier then offered his body as a host to Proteus, allowing Proteus to become immensely powerful. Colossus did his part by attempting to stop Proteus from behind, but the Proteus-possessed Xavier cut Piotr's arm off. Colossus then used the severed, metallic arm to impale Xavier, killing both Xavier and Proteus.

PROTEUS

Formerly known as Mutant X, Brian MacTaggert (he was named Kevin MacTaggert on Earth-616) was the son of Dr. Moira MacTaggert of Muir Island. After escaping from his metallic prison cell on the island, Proteus jumped from host body to host body, quickly burning the bodies of their life energies until he managed to possess the body of the X-Man Phoenix. Seeing the possessed Phoenix as a threat to Russia, the Soviet Super-Soldiers soon arrived in Edinburgh, Scotland to aid in stopping Proteus. He eventually jumped into the body of Professor Charles Xavier and was killed by the metallic Colossus after severing one of his arms.

ILLYANA RASPUTIN (PIOTR'S SISTER)

As a child, Illyana Rasputin was killed by a runaway tractor at her farm collective home. Colossus blamed Charles Xavier for her death, as Xavier had been attempting to get Colossus to join the X-Men at the time of her death.

THE SOVIET SUPER-SOLDIERS

Unlike the Earth-616 version of the team, the Soviet Super-Soldiers of this Earth included the Russian mutant Colossus, who had declined Professor Xavier's offer to join the X-Men. The Super-Soldiers were eventually notified of the threat posed by the reality-warping mutant called Proteus and were called into action to stop him. The Super-Soldiers' misson was success due to the actions of Colossus, who used his arm to impale the host body of Proteus. In later years, Colossus and Darkstar retired from the Soviet Super-Soldiers to be married.

Their roster was as follows: (from left to right): Colossus, Darkstar, Ursa Major, Vanguard, and the Crimson Dynamo.

THE X-MEN

On this Earth, Colossus never joined the X-Men when the original team was captured by the mutant island Krakoa. Instead, Havok remained on as a team member and aided the X-Men in their battle with Proteus, which eventually cost them the life of their mentor, Professor Charles Xavier.

Their roster was as follows: (from left to right): Storm, Havok, Phoenix, and Nightcrawler. Not pictured members include Cyclops and Wolverine.
