History:
(Ninja High School#41# (fb) - BTS) - Professor Yavio was a brilliant young geneticist who believed that hidden within certain individuals' DNA were genes for superpowers that could benefit mankind if only they could be harnessed. Unfortunately, everyone thought he was nuts and so he couldn't get funding to do research into his theory, so he sold some inventions, a Juice-O-Tron that could make juice out of anything and a perfect toaster, the Toast-B-Done, and sold them to Delta Industries, thus making his fortune. His research discovered what he dubbed "alternant genes" which could be activated via vitamorph radiation. Despite the risk, he used himself as his first test subject, and the V-radiation successfully activated his genes, giving him telekinetic and telepathic powers. Initially he considered revealing his invention for the benefit of all, but the Cold War was still raging and he realized the potential that alternant power might escalate that struggle, so instead he chose to adopt a group of children and raise them to use alterna-powers for good. He chose those with the most alternant potential he could find, exposing them to vitamorph rays to bring out various abilities. Based out of his mansion turned into a school, he trained his six "Y-Men" - Elastico, Fatman, Metapho, Leatherwings, Windstorm and team leader Mysto - for the day when their minds and powers would be ready to face the challenges of the world. Professor Yavio designed a flying skycycle for the three team members who couldn't fly under their own power - he dubbed it the Y-Sky, though Fatman nicknamed it the "Wiseguy."

   The kids all considered one another siblings. At some point as he grew up Leatherwings realized he was gay.

(Ninja High School#41 ) - Despite Yavio's rule to avoid contact with the nearby town of Quagmire, Leatherwings ordered some Japanese food for delivery. When the delivery "boy" (actually a girl disguised as a boy), Sammi Kondo, from Sakura Inn arrived at the school gates Leatherwings buzzed her in and met the teen at the front door, his wings hidden beneath a leather jacket. Once Sammi had been paid and departed, Leatherwings told the rest of the team that he had food. Fatman was pleased, but Mysto chastised him for bringing an outsider to their sanctuary against the Professor's instructions. Just as Fatman began to tuck in, the group received a mental summons from Professor Y. Donning their costumes, the team assembled and the Professor informed them that Cerebello had detected strange power fluctuations that could only be explained by living energy. He ordered the Y-Men to take the Y-Sky Cycle and investigate.

   The team swiftly flew to the junkyard, but upon arriving were shocked to find Sammi already there. Standing in front of the junkyard owner, Barney, and a large figure with a blanket draped over him to hide his feature, Sammi explained to the newcomers that Sakura Inn delivered anywhere in town, including the junkyard. Leatherwings began to express surprise, starting to say "you were just..." (at their school only minutes earlier), but Mysto quickly shushed him. However it was too late - wondering what Leatherwings had been about to say, Sammi took a closer look at immediately recognized him as the boy from the "private school." While Leatherwings was shocked to have his identity uncovered, Elastico pointed out he'd told the Professor their masks were too flimsy, and Windstorm, who didn't even have a mask, grumbled "speak for yourself." Mysto asked if Sammi was behind the energy fluctuations and demanded to know how he'd gotten there so fast, but before Sammi could respond Barney angrily told the Y-Men to get off his property. All the shouting caused the cloaked figure to stand up and shout for silence, with the blanket dropping off him as he did so to reveal he was a large humanoid robot. This caused everyone to shut up in shock and concern, but then the robot apologized and asked if he could now start eating the rice Sammi had delivered because he was famished. While Barney found this amusing, Sammi whispered to Mysto and asked him if he knew who the robot was. When Mysto made it clear he didn't Sammi hastily told the Y-Men leader that he was Destructo, one of the ringleaders of a robot army that had tried to invade Quagmire last fall. When Sammi expressed surprise that Mysto hadn't heard about the incident, the Y-Man sheepishly admitted that his team didn't get out much. Hearing this, Barney again tried to get them to all leave, stating he didn't care who Destructo was because he considered the robot his new meal ticket. When Sammi pointed out that Destructo was a power-mad evil robot, Barney retorted that wasn't the case anymore since Destructo had amnesia and was happy to do whatever he was told.

   Finishing the food, Destructo expressed the wish that his hunger for his memories could be sated as easily, so Mysto volunteered the suggestion that Professor Yavio might be able to help, accidentally calling him Destructo. Recognizing his name, the robot eagerly accepted the offer, despite Barney's protests. Leatherwings asked Sammi to come too, to fill them all in on the robot invasion story. Sammi was uncertain, especially as her uncle might be getting worried if  she was away too long, but decided to go anyway, thinking the team might need the help of her superhero alter ego Ramen Rider if Destructo's memories returned. As they loaded her delivery bike onto the skycycle Leatherings asked her how she'd gotten to the junkyard so fast and she informed him she'd taken a shortcut, leading Elastico to complain to the cycle's pilot Fatman that he'd told him there was a better route to the junkyard from the school. As she took a ride in the skycycle Sammi admitted to herself that she found Leatherwings really cute. When the got back to the mansion it became clear the Professor was having a forgetful spell, as he didn't recall sending them out and wanted to know why they'd been out joyriding and brought back strangers. Mysto told the others that Yavio probably wouldn't be much use that night, and ordered Elastico and Fatman to take Destructo to the scanning lab to try and get some readings, while Leatherwings was to show Sammi round and explain things to "him." When Windstorm demanded to know what he was to do, Mysto told the youngest member to take Sammi's bike downstairs, then finish his overdue geometry homework.

   While being shown around Sammi asked Leatherwings if the Professor was alright, and Leatherwings explained that he got "kind of senile sometimes." Sammi expressed surprise that the team's parents sent them to the school if that was the case, but Leatherwings explained they were all orphans, with Professor Y being their legal guardian. This prompted Sammi to ask if Yavio went around adopting kids with weird powers, so Leatherwings explained their origins. Hearing how the Professor had mutated and then trained them, Sammi asked Leatherwings if he minded being prevented from ever leading a normal life, but Leatherwings asked Sammi what normal meant, adding that the Y-Men were the only family he'd ever had, and if the Professor hadn't adopted him he wouldn't have had the same childhood with the same brothers and sister. Noticing pictures on the wall of a younger Leatherwings holding a kite, Sammi got excited, mentioning that building and flying kites was a hobby "he" had too. Leatherwings admitted he used to fly kites all the time before his wings got large enough for him to fly himself. Suddenly noticing the time Sammi panicked that her uncle was probably going crazy with worry, and suggested she come back tomorrow to fill the Professor in about Destructo, and bring one of her kites along to show Leatherwings at the same time. Leatherwings liked the idea, then as Sammi was about to leave suddenly thought to double-check just how dangerous Sammi thought Destructo was. Sammi informed him that when the robots threatened to destroy Quagmire, Destructo had seemed the worst of the bunch. Just before she left, Sammi asked Leatherwings what his actual name was, and he told Sammi to call him Charlie. As she pedaled home, Sammi wondered if she should tell Charlie she was really a girl, telling herself she could keep a relationship with him secret from her uncle, and that it would be nice to have somewhere she didn't have to pretend.

(Ninja High School#42) -The next day Destructo, kitted out in a Y-Man uniform, faced off against the team in the mansion's Peril Room. The robot complained that it was unfair he had to face off against everyone else at once, but Mysto told him it was just so they could test the full extent of his powers. Beginning the test, the team all leapt for Destructo, but he easily threw them all away. Fatman called to Elastico to use their practiced slingshot maneuver, where the stretchy Y-Man used his body to catapult Fatman at someone, but as Fatman arced through the air towards Destructo the robot simply swatted him out of the air face first into the ground. Then Destructo fired an energy beam at Windstorm and Elastico, both of whom hastily dodged, which proved to be fortuitous as the beam destroyed a huge chunk of the wall behind where they had been, opening up the Peril Room to the mansion grounds. Seeing this an embarrassed Destructo apologized for ruining the house, but Mysto reassured him the Peril Room got banged up all the time. As Leathering helped a shaking Windstorm back to his feet Mysto told Elastico and Fatman to begin cleaning the place up. With Professor Yavio still not over his bad spell and now levitating uncontrollably ("Help. I've fallen up and can't get down.") Charlie gave Sammi a call at Sakura Inn and told her to postpone coming over until the next morning.

   Later that day Metapho noticed that Destructo staring at a sheet of paper; when she asked what he was looking at, he admitted he'd drawn something in his sleep but couldn't figure out what it was. Looking at his sketch, she saw rather worryingly that it was designs for fighter jets and very large missiles, so she hastily rolled them up and suggested she should show them to the Professor in the morning.

   The next morning, a Sunday, Sammi arrived very early carrying a kite, and was let in by Charlie, who was munching some toast and only wearing shorts. Over his memory problems, Professor Yavio asked their guest to tell them of the recent robot problems, and Sammi explained how the robots had threatened the town of Quagmire, but eventually most of them returned to the future with their leader Omegargantutron. However some, including Destructo and his cronies, had stayed behind, saying they were going to build a robot commune by the lake. Concerned, some of the residents including scientist Professor Steamhead had maintained a watch on the robots, and after a week found them all inert, having seemingly run out of energy because they'd been unable to find a compatible power source; Steamhead believed Destructo had tried to run all the other robots off his own unique living energies but it had proved insufficient, and only caused him to run down too. Unable to detect any danger from them, Steamhead had dumped them all at the junkyard. Hearing this Yavio hypothesized that a profound power loss was consistent with Destructo's memory loss, but the question was whether his memory and destructive nature would return as his power levels rejuvenated, especially in light of his nocturnal sketches. Before the discussion could progress further the intruder alarm sounded, and mere seconds later the wall exploded as the junkyard owner Barney, now piloting a mech made out of wrecked cars and calling himself Scrap-Metal Man, attacked, demanding the return of his robot. Fatman leapt for Barney in his cockpit, but was knocked away by the mech; dodging the rebounding Y-Man, Sammi tried to Ramen-Rider Double Punch but the mech grabbed his fist and electrocuted him. However, the pair had bought the others time to react, and Barney now found himself facing an energy snake Metapho was generating, storm gusts from Windstorm, flying cutlery courtesy of Yavio, and Elastico's enlarged fists. Realizing he'd bitten off more than he could handle, Scrap-Metal Man unleashed a "rust dust smokescreen" to cover a hasty retreat, though as he scarpered he shouted back that they'd not heard the last of him. Windstorm cleared the smoke and Charlie helped Sammi back to her feet just as Mysto and Destructo arrived, having missed all the action. Not wanting to risk telling Destructo the truth, since he considered Barney his friend, Yavio told them the alert had been a false alarm, telling the robot that his friend had just popped by but had left saying he'd come back later once told Destructo was busy. When Mysto queried where all the dust had come from, Yavio told him Barney had forgotten to wipe his feet. The Professor then told Mysto and Destructo to get back to testing the robot's knowledge in the computer lab. Once the two left, Yavio explained that he didn't want to risk exposing Destructo to the concepts of greed and use of force while he was still so impressionable. Sammi asked if the Professor thought it would make a difference, and perhaps Destructo could learn not to be evil. The Professor was unsure, stating that it depended on how much of his past violence was programming that might have been erased by the power drain, and how much was inherent to the strange and unknown form of living energy that was at the core of his being.

   With the Professor going back to check the data Mysto had collected Charlie and Sammi went outside to fly the kite. As the pair bonded Sammi decided to risk telling the boy she was growing attracted to that she was really a girl. However, when she told Charlie she had a secret she wanted to share with him that almost no one knew, he preempted her explanation, stating he had already guessed it from the way Sammi had been looking at him, and admitted he had sensed an attraction between them. Hearing this, Sammi embraced Charlie and tried to kiss him, but he told her to not be too hasty. Embarrassed, Sammi apologized for being so forward, but Charlie told her it was okay, adding that they just needed to be careful and keep their heads straight. Then he pointed out that just because they were both gay didn't necessarily mean they had enough in common to have a serious relationship. Hearing this Sammi struggled to hide her mortified reaction, but luckily for her Charlie was distracted checking the kite, stating as he did that they needed to take things slowly while they got to know one another. Making a hasty excuse that she'd just remembered her uncle wanted her back at the shop early, Sammi fled for home, her sudden departure surprising Charlie.

(Ninja High School#43) - The next morning Windstorm woke to find a note from Destructo saying he had gone to visit Barney in the junkyard. Flying downstairs Windstorm quickly informed Professor Yavio, who ordered the team to deploy to the junkyard immediately, minus Windstorm who was being grounded for breaking house rules by flying in the house. As the Y-Sky approached their target it became clear Destructo had been busy, as there was now a giant high-tech tower looming over the place. Spotting them coming, Barney tried to hold off the Y-Men with his toaster ack-ack array, which shot the Y-Sky out the air. As he fell Fatman told Mysto not to catch him so he could store-up the impact energy, but unfortunately it provided so much that it left Fatman looking like a giant ball and unable to move. As the team regrouped around their beached teammate they realized Sammi was also present, having similarly spotted the tower while heading out early to school. Mysto told Sammi it was dangerous and instructed her to leave, but Sammi refused, making a point to flip Mysto head over heels with her ramen-justu to make a point. Having reduced in size sufficiently to move again, Fatman punched a hole in the junkyard's fence but as they looked inside the realized the interior resembled a maze. Unwilling to let the team get bottled up in the narrow lanes where they would be vulnerable to booby-traps, Mysto ordered them to split into pairs and rendezvous at the structure in the center of the yard. Fatman and Elastico were to go to the right, he and Metapho would take the central route, and Sammi and Leatherwings the left.

   Fatman and Elastico were soon confronted by Scrap-Metal Man, who activated a wall of washing machines that unleashed a wave of staticky lint that threatened to engulf the pair. Stretching for some nearby oil drums, Elastico embraced them and had Fatman then pull on him, toppling the drums over to release the oil inside, cancelling out the lint even if it left them coated in sticky gunk. Meanwhile Sammi and Leatherwings hit a dead end in the lane between piles of scrapped cars, but before they could retrace their steps they found the path behind them blocked by an automated vehicle with multiple razor-sharp fans advancing on them. Leatherwings had insufficient space to unfold his wings in order to fly out the way, so Sammi had him boost her so she could leap over the fans and then disable the booby-trap from behind. Around the same time Mysto and Metapho reached the tower, where they were attacked by Barney in his mech. Mysto opened a portal to the plane of ice to unleash a freezing wind, but Barney countered with high intensity heat generated by old oven components. However Metapho took the energy and transformed it into a giant feline that smashed the mech. Chastened, Barney threw in the towel and fled, pursued by some energy hounds created by Metapho. With the others now arrived, the Y-Men and Sammi tentatively entered the tower, where they were met by Destructo, back in his cloaked garb from his old robot army days. He informed them that what he was building was almost completed, and when Mysto tried to convince him to return with them to the mansion Destructo apologized, saying that he'd been called to build his device. Stepping aside so they could see what he was referring to more clearly, they saw he had constructed a gigantic device with a nuclear symbol on its housing. Declaring it beautiful, Destructo held up the final piece it needed. Mysto again tried to reason with him, asking Destructo if he really wanted to finish the device if he didn't know what it did, but Destructo ominously responded that he thought he did know. As Sammi shouted that it was a bomb, Elastico rapidly stretched for the robot, shouting that they had to stop him, but Destructo deflected him with an energized fist, declaring that something within him needed to destroy. Mysto made one last plea, reminding Destructo that they were his friends, but Destructo countered that if they were friends how could they ask him to stop doing what he existed to do, destroying things. He plunged the final component into place and the bomb instantly detonated, engulfing Destructo and vaporizing him. However to their surprise Sammi and the Y-Men were unharmed. Mysto realized that Destructo must have kept his force shield on so that the explosion was all channeled upwards, protecting them so he could be true to himself without harming others. Mysto sadly wondered if they could have found a better way by trying to deal with his nature rather than changing it.

   With the crisis over, Sammi asked Charlie to meet him in the park after school finished. There Sammi revealed to Charlie that she was a girl. Rather than the disappointment she feared he might express, Charlie pointed out that he was just happy to make a new friend after growing up his whole life within Yavio's school with only six other people for company. With the confusion between them settled, the pair agreed to go off and hang out together.

   Ninja High School is a very long running independent title owned by its creator Ben Dunn. The first issue came out in 1987, and the series is still in publication, recently passing its 200th issue (although there was a hiatus during the 2010s). There have also been several Ninja High School miniseries and spin-offs. Like so many independent titles in the 1980s, Dunn initially self-published, creating his own company, Antarctic Press, to do so. After four issues however he moved to publishing via Eternity Comics, a division of Malibu, which is why Ninja High School is eligible for coverage on the Appendix, since Marvel later bought Malibu. Just to be clear though in case anyone is confused - Dunn still owns everything Ninja High School, not Marvel. It's in the same boat as other creator-owned series Marvel published at one time or another. Dunn returned to publishing Ninja High School via his own Antarctic Press with NHS#40, so strictly speaking the Y-Men fall outside of the "kind of Marvel-related" issues, but given the Y-Men are very obviously X-Men homages/parodies, they just felt the right characters to cover for NHS first Appendix profile.

   Ninja High School was and is Dunn's love letter to manga, plus a whole lot of other pop culture stuff Dunn loves. Strictly speaking the title is misleading - the titular school isn't for ninjas, there's just a few (okay, quite a few) ninjas attending, alongside alien princesses, superheroes, mad scientists, time travelers, witches, etc. Oh, and robots, which is where temporary Y-Man Destructo originated, in a prior story where he was one of a group of sentient robots out to conquer the world. I highly recommend checking the series out, though be aware that Dunn took a step back and let others write and draw the title every so often, with mixed results. If it is an issue Dunn wrote or drew, then it's excellent stuff. If it's someone else, then it can be a little more pot luck. But that's just my opinion - YMMV.

   Apart from Destructo, the only regular NHS character the Y-Men interact with is Sammi Kondo. As alluded to above, Sammi is a female martial artist who works for her uncle as a delivery boy - and yes, I did mean BOY. Without delving too deeply into the details, Sammi's dad made a bet before she was born that he'd have a son, and then after he got a daughter he hid this from his brother, Sammi's uncle. In her early teens Sammi was sent to live with her uncle, but with strict instructions not to tell him the truth (with her father telling her that her uncle had a weak heart, so if he found out it might kill her), so she maintains the pretense even though she doesn't like presenting herself publicly as a boy. She's also sometimes the superhero Ramen Rider, a play on the long-running Kamen Rider franchise combined with the Japanese food staple Ramen (because she delivers food, get it?). Though it has shifted over the long run, Ninja High School originally at its core was about a love triangle between an average American boy, Jeremy Feeple, his ninja fiance Ichi-Kun Ichinohei (that didn't want to marry him, but was told she had to in order to inherit leadership of her clan), and his alien princess fiancee Asrial (on orders to marry a human to bring Earth into her space federation, and who picked Jeremy at random). Think Archie, Betty and Veronica, if Archie didn't actually want to date either girl (at least at first), but was being aggressively pursued by both of them. Naturally, one of the tropes of such triangles was to bring in other would-be suitors and love rivals for one or other of the trio, and Sammi was initially introduced to fill that role, forced to date Ichi-Kun to maintain her pretense of being a boy. The character proved popular, and so was kept around, hence being the main already-established NHS character in the Y-Men story.

   We don't get told the full names of the Y-Men members, nor even the real names of all of them. The names we do know are gleaned from them occasionally referring to each other by their non-hero identities. It's possible since they were all orphans taken in by Professor Yavio that they all have taken his surname, but it's not clear if he actually formally adopted them, so they also might have kept their original surnames, whatever those were. Leatherwing is called Charles by Mysto in NHS#41, and later that issue tells Sammi to call him Charlie, but in NHS#43 she called him Richard a few times. I guess writer Herb Mallette just forgot. And no, he's not Charles Richard, because Sammi was getting closer to him and so was unlikely to switch from using his first name to surname, even if she'd known what it was. Similarly Fatman is called Casper in NHS#41, but Hamm in #42, and back to Casper in #43 - there I guess we might have Casper Hamm, though why his teammates would suddenly switch to calling him by his surname I couldn't say, so perhaps Hamm is a nickname? Meanwhile Elastico gets called Eli in NHS#42 and #43, but whether that's his real name or just an abbreviation of his codename is up for debate.

   The Y-Men actually appeared before the rest of Ninja High School. As Dunn explained in an online post:
   "2 years before I started ANTARCTIC PRESS I attempted my own fanzine called COMICZINE. Before the advent of computer publishing everything had to be done by hand. Using a typewriter and a photocopier I assembled my own fanzine to sell at the local comic store. I think I printed 10 copies that were only distributed in San Antonio. Don't know if anyone still owns a copy but I sold out the entire 10 copy run. Here is a little insight into my early publishing career and into fanzines of the time. It's crude by today's standards but I worked with what I had. I did not let the technology stop me from doing it when I set my mind to it. There is a pin-up of a team of characters called THE CHALLENGERS that were previously THE Y-MEN which later made their official comic appearance in NINJA HIGH SCHOOL #41. It also features a pin-up of THE INCREDIBLES. A superhero team that pre-dates the PIXAR version by decades. I was also a big promoter of anime at the time as well and did a section dedicated to it and of course I had to include a comic section. I hope you like this little slice of my early fandom years. I only did one issue as I found it too time consuming and I was wanting to focus on doing comics."

   This profile was completed on 09/17/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25^th anniversary's celebratory event to represent Ninja High School.
