Powers/Abilities: X-Caliber's right arm was cybernetic from the elbow down, and equipped with a number of built-in projectile weapons, ranging from high-caliber teflon mushroom bullets to drugged darts coated with a pleasure inducing drug. These all exited from a muzzle located under his mechanical wrist, and were fired by him lowering his two middle fingers while keeping the index and pinkie fingers raised. Because his right hand was metallic, he could strike with considerable force using it.
In his dream interrogation he changed his gun
into a higher caliber "big game" gun; given it was a dream, it is
uncertain whether he could actually do this for real.

History:
(Coyote#6 (fb) - BTS)
- The man who would become the assassin X-Caliber was a Soviet
citizen.
(Coyote#7 (fb)) - He was a rising star in the KGB, to the
point where General Secretaty Yuri Andropov had him summoned to Moscow,
where he was informed he had been selected to undergo cybernetic surgery
and become an operative codenamed X-Caliber. He was sent to an unnamed
compound in Siberia where doctors operated on him under Andropov's
personal supervision, replacing much of his right arm from the elbow
down with a bionic one complete with a built-in gun.
Though ostensibly this surgery had been done for the KGB, the technology
was provided by the secret conspiracy known as the Shadow Cabinet; only he and Andropov knew his operation was not
KGB-born, and X-Caliber found himself working for both
organizations, treading a fine line of deception that required him to
ensure the former employer was unaware that he worked for the latter.
X-Caliber rationalized being a double agent by convincing himself that
confrontations between the two superpowers (USA and USSR) should have
been straightforward, but wild cards like the Israelis, Chinese, South
Africans and others risked plunging the world into chaos were it not for
the Shadow Cabinet overshadowing all of them, confronting no one if they
could avoid it and instead using sorcery and science to infiltrate the
KGB and all similar groups.
On a daily basis X-Caliber worked as a Soviet
agent, doing his duty for the state, but every so often a crow would fly
down and recite to him another set of orders from the Shadow Cabinet,
which he would also obey. He believed these were trained birds, unaware
that many of the Shadow Cabinet leaders were actually sentient crows.
(Coyote#11/2 (fb)) - After Dunya Rulistkaya was forcibly recruited by the Soviets to become one of their superpowered agents, X-Caliber was assigned to train her.
(Coyote#10 (fb) - BTS) - She and X-Caliber became lovers.
(Coyote#6 (fb) - BTS) -
X-Caliber became the KGB's leading shock trooper in the Americas,
based out of the Soviet embassy in Washington, D.C., where he was
officially classed as a diplomat. In frequent pain thanks to his
prosthetics, he regularly bought Tylenol over the counter from a
local pharmacy so that his masters wouldn't know about his problem.
X-Caliber was instructed to
kill Mossad agent Toby Netz in Nevada.
(Coyote#6 (fb)) - Coyote, his lover
NaTalia, and their acquaintance Toby Netz were visiting Netz's fellow
Mossad agent Arik Pachad in Southern Nevada Memorial Hospital when
X-Caliber threw open the door to Pachad's room and opened fire.
Possessing enhanced capabilities, both Coyote and NaTalia managed to
evade, but Netz was killed.
(Coyote#6) - Dodging, Coyote pushed NaTalia out of the line of
fire. Then the assassin fled, but the enraged Coyote pursued. X-Caliber
shoved a mobile cat scan into Coyote's path, and because Coyote had a
heightened sensitivity to radiation the impact shocked him long enough
for X-Caliber to escape. Recovering, Coyote returned to Arik Pachad's
hospital room, where the Mossad spy informed him who they had just
faced.
(Coyote#6 - BTS) - Having completed his assignment
X-Caliber continued on to Washington, D.C., but meanwhile Coyote, in his
disguise as junior Shadow Cabinet employee Sly Santangelo, was
instructed by one of the Cabinet leaders, Dark Cardinal, that he was to
go to Washington and kill X-Caliber on the Cabinet's behalf. Informed of
X-Caliber's Tylenol purchasing habits, Coyote staked out the pharmacy,
disguised by his illusory powers.
(Coyote#7 (fb) - BTS) - Dark Cardinal considered pitting
X-Caliber against Sly Santagelo a test for the assassin.
(Coyote#6) - When X-Caliber went to buy some more Tylenol from the pharmacy, Coyote tailed the assassin back to the embassy, then tagged along on top of X-Caliber's car when the KGB agent drove back out. X-Caliber drove around to check whether he had a tail, unaware of the invisible hitch-hiker on his roof, then stopped at Ross Creek Park in Georgetown and headed into a mansion there. However, he had somehow spotted his pursuer, and instead of going inside he ducked into cover behind one of the pillars bracketing the front door, and when Coyote moved closer X-Caliber ducked out from cover and shot at him. Dodging again, Coyote then lunged at X-Caliber with a roar, but the cyborg slammed his metal palm up under Coyote's chin, then delivered a ringing slap to his face. In return Coyote punched X-Caliber in the face, but the assassin responded with a point-blank shot that wounded Coyote's left arm, then fled, realizing from seeing Coyote's animalistic eyes that he'd be better off maintaining a safe distance while seeking to shoot his foe. Coyote however wasn't giving up, so he pursued and again pounced on X-Caliber. As he tried to throttle X-Caliber the assassin smashed Coyote in the face with his cybernetic arm, and the forced Coyote to flee with a barrage of gunfire.
X-Caliber pursued his prey as Coyote ran into the
National Zoo and the giant panda cage. Glancing round X-Caliber noted
the two pandas sedately sitting and watching him, then spotted something
hiding in the bushes at the back of the cage. Moving quietly in hopes of
not alerting his target, X-Caliber edged closer and prepared to take his
shot when one of the pandas he had largely ignored reared up and stunned
him with heavy paw blow to the back of the skull. He then tied the
unconscious X-Caliber up with the assistance of the other panda, before
dropping his illusion to reveal himself to be Coyote. One of the genuine
pandas asked why the Coyote didn't eat his human foe, and he told them
he had a better trick and showed them X-Caliber's prosthetic arm.
(Coyote#6 - BTS) - Disguised as X-Caliber Coyote returned to the house the assassin had been heading to and discovered his other lover Cassie being held there. When he freed her, she revealed that X-Caliber had been working for the Shadow Cabinet.
(Coyote#7)
- Coyote held X-Calibur prisoner in the zoo's storage cellar and put him
into a dream state to interrogate him. In the nightmare X-Caliber was a
gunslinger in the Old West facing attacks from hostile Native Americans,
stampeding buffalo, mobile cactii and hordes of snakes. Using this
Coyote extracted information from the assassin, learning of his origins
and ties to both KGB and Cabinet. When he revealed to X-Caliber that he
too was tied to the latter, the assassin admitted he had suspected as
much, noting that both his employers liked to put their own people
against each other so that only the strong would survive. Satisfied he
had learned all he needed to know, Coyote then slashed X-Caliber's
throat with his claws, killing the Soviet agent.
(Coyote#8) - In his guise as Sly Santangelo, Coyote
delivered X-Caliber's corpse to Dark Cardinal in the Cabinet's secret HQ
for the District of Columbia. Noting that X-Caliber had been a good
operative at one time, Cardinal assumed his crow form, then pecked out
and ate X-Caliber's eyes. Since Sly had passed Cardinal's test rather
than X-Caliber, he was given the choice of being initiated into the
Cabinet's third chamber or dying. Naturally he accepted the invitation,
though he rightly suspected that part of the process would involve
surgical alteration. X-Caliber's corpse was also brought along to a
morgue adjoining the operating room, so when everyone's attention was
momentarily elsewhere Coyote used his illusory abilities to turn
invisible, slip away from the operating table before they began the
surgery, and swap in X-Caliber's corpse, clad in an illusion of being
the unconscious Sly. Coyote maintained the illusion through the
operation, making sure it seemed like the corpse was a living being with
all the requisite life signs as they cut out and removed half of
X-Caliber's brain.
(Coyote#9 (fb)) - With the operation finished, Coyote
maintained the illusion that Sly Santangelo was lying on the operating
table, but slipped X-Caliber's corpse back to the morgue for disposal,
then went back and resumed playing the role of Santangelo.
(Coyote#10 - BTS) - Having head that Sly Santangelo had slain her lover, Slash hunted him down intending to kill him in revenge.

X-Caliber has white hair in Coyote#6, but
it's blond thereafter (including in flashbacks set prior to Coyote#6),
so it seems blond is correct.
Though Coyote killed X-Caliber, it's worth noting that Slash and another unidentified Soviet agent were shown to be unable to truly die, as they had undergone a process that caused their souls to automatically transfer to clones upon death, so its feasible that this also held true for X-Caliber.
One of the pandas in the zoo in Coyote#6 is
identified as Ling-Ling, but the other is not named. However, in the
real zoo in the 1980s the two pandas were Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing, so
presumably the pair in the comic were their comic counterparts.
This profile was completed on 09/04/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary's celebratory event to represent Coyote.
