Powers/Abilities: John Warden is a psychic with the ability to read minds. While seated in the telepathic amplifier his powers were increased to an unknown degree. He uses special communication devices to remain in contact with field agents from headquarters.

History:

(Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. I#6) - When Colonel Nick Fury discovered the Collective Intelligence intended to deliberately draw an asteroid into a collision course with the Earth he contacted Warden and asked the ESP Unit to determine what his location was. Warden directed his fellow ESP agents to find the location of the Collective Intelligence but the extraterrestrials successfully resisted the attempted psycho-probe. Warden said this was a natural protective trait of the species. He offered to have the entire ESP team continue to try and pierce the aliens' minds but warned it would cause mental collapse and death. Fury thanked him for his help but told the ESP Unit to stand down.

(Secret Warriors I#1/text) - With other S.H.I.E.L.D. ESP agents, Warden was assigned to Red Worm, a S.H.I.E.L.D. Shadow Facility just south of San Jose, California. When Director Fury discovered Earth had been invaded by Skrulls who infiltrated the ranks of S.H.I.E.L.D. he placed Red Worm on lockdown. All ESP agents including Warden were cryogenically frozen in the facility under the threat was resolved and lockdown lifted.

(Secret Warriors I#3) - Red Worm was invaded by Hydra agents led by the Gorgon and Kraken. Some of the ESP agents were killed, others were taken to Hydra's base Gehenna. Warden's fate during this altercation is unrevealed.

His first name was revealed in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z I#10's S.H.I.E.L.D. entry.

Warden's chamber and amplifier are nothing like the facilities Kirby or Steranko drew in previous appearances of the ESP Unit but the entire concept may have been inspired by Philip K. Dick's 1956 short story "Minority Report."

In Secret Warriors I#12 Kraken announced that he'd repurposed the ESP agents he captured from Red Worm to serve Hydra. If Warden was one of them then would be his fate - except, of course, Kraken turned out to be Jake Fury, who had been working for his brother Nick all along, so we shouldn't believe anything Kraken claimed.

We all know you can't spell espionage without E-S-P.
