History:
(Western Life Romances I#2/3) - Belle Chance's mother died when she was an infant. Her father raised her on his ranch in Bluebonnet County as though she were his son, training her to be an excellent horse rider. One day, while Belle and her father were riding through their ranch they saw a rustler who was trying to rebrand one of their steers as one of his. When they drew up closer, they recognized the rustler as Tom Powers, the deputy in Bluebonnet County. Suddenly, Sheriff Sam Consodine drew up to defend his deputy. Belle's father insisted he'd tell everyone in the county about the sheriff's treachery, so the sheriff shot him to death.
Belle fled for her life and rode her horse to town to tell others what had happened, but the corrupt lawmen arrived first and claimed they had caught her father rustling cattle and had killed him in self-defense. After her father's funeral, Belle rode back to her family ranch and assumed control over it. As years passed, she remained determined to one day avenge her father.
One day she returned to her ranch house to find the outlaw Curley Braddock had hidden in her home as he tried to evade the law. Curley was wounded and passed out just as Sheriff Consodine arrived with a posse. Belle confronted Consodine and demanded he get off her land, telling him nothing about Curley. Belle helped nurse Curley back to health and asked to become his partner, helping him to organize raids on stagecoaches, banks and railroads in Bluebonnet County as her way of getting back at Sheriff Consodine. Curley agreed to the plan and helped her gather up a gang. Belle told all of them there would be no killing in their robberies.
Belle began leading she and Curley's gang in their robberies, wearing a black outfit with a mask to conceal her identity. Soon, wanted posters went up calling her "the Vixen" and Belle adopted the alias.
One night, while raiding a Wells Fargo office, the Vixen encountered Sheriff Consodine, but before she could act, Curley shot the sheriff dead. The Vixen told Curley this was the end of her criminal activities because Curley had broken her rule against killing. Curley refused to accept this, insisting he needed her leadership and wanted to marry her. When Belle refused, Curley insisted, noting they were both outlaws and were bound together.
Belle went back to the gang's camp. When Curley and the others returned there, they informed her a ranger named Jim Farnum had been sent to clean up the Vixen's gang. Belle led her gang to her ranch, where she let the gang reside as though they were her hired ranch hands. When Jim Farnum himself came to the ranch, asking for a place to spend the night, Belle allowed him to, but kept him away from the bunkhouse in fear that Curley would try to kill him. The next day Belle escorted Jim as he left her property and she found herself attracted to him.
The following day, Jim came back to the ranch and kissed her, then told her he'd found the Vixen's camp and followed the gang's trail to her ranch - he knew she was the Vixen. Overhearing this, Curley and the other members of the gang tried to ambush Jim but Jim killed most of them, leaving Curley alive but wounded. Curley threatened to kill Belle unless Jim dropped his guns; Jim complied, but Belle drew a gun and shot Curley dead. With the entire gang killed, Jim decided to conceal what he'd learned about Belle being the Vixen. Rather than betray his office as a Ranger, Jim destroyed his badge, declaring he'd done his job - the Vixen's gang had been destroyed and the Vixen no longer existed. Jim and Belle were able to remain together and hoped to marry.

Curley Braddock was an outlaw who traveled through Bluebonnet County and was wounded while escaping a posse led by Sheriff Sam Consodine. Belle spared Curley from the posse and tended to his injuries, then proposed a partnership, forming a gang with Curley as he recruited other outlaws to assist them. Curley engaged in several robberies on behalf of Bell in her identity as the Vixen but when Curley killed Sheriff Consodine during a robbery he violated Belle's rule against killing and she demanded their partnership end. When Jim Farnum came after the Vixen's gang and fell in love with Belle, Curley tried to kill him but Jim killed all of Curley's allies and wounded Curley. Curley threatened to shoot Belle unless Jim dropped his gun so Jim complied but Belle took up a gun and killed Curley to save Jim.

Mr. Chance was Belle's father and lived in Bluebonnet County as a rancher. One night he found Deputy Tom Powers attempting to rustle one of his cattle, but Sheriff Sam Consodine intervened before Mr. Chance could stop Powers. Mr. Chance vowed he would expose the two corrupt lawmen's operations, so Sheriff Consodine killed him, then claimed Mr. Chance had been the one rustling cattle, destroying his reputation. Belle became the Vixen to avenge her father's death.

Sheriff Sam Consodine was the corrupt lawman of Bluebonnet County. Sheriff Consodine was involved in cattle rustling with his deputy Tom Powers. When Mr. Chance caught them rustling cattle and vowed to expose them, Sheriff Consodine killed Mr. Chance, then framed him for rustling to conceal his own crimes. Belle Chance vowed to avenge her father and later hid the outlaw Curley Braddock from Sheriff Consodine's posse, then formed a criminal gang with Curley as the Vixen as a means of striking at Sheriff Consodine. One night, Sheriff Consodine interrupted the Vixen during a Wells Fargo office robbery but Curley shot Sheriff Consodine dead.

Jim Farnum was a Ranger who was sent to capture the Vixen after her gang slew Sheriff Sam Consodine. Farnum quickly located the camp used by the Vixen's gang and followed their tracks to Belle Chance's ranch. Jim knew Belle was the Vixen but had quickly fallen in love with her, conflicting with his sense of duty. When Curley Braddock and the other gang members saw Jim they tried to ambush him but Jim wounded Curley and killed the other gang members. Curley threatened to kill Belle unless Jim dropped his gun so Jim complied but Belle took a gun and killed Curley to save Jim's life. Belle was prepared to surrender to Jim rather than ask him to violate his honor as a ranger but Jim observed he'd destroyed the Vixen's gang and the Vixen no longer existed. Jim destroyed his Ranger's badge and intended to stay with Belle and marry her.

Tom Powers was deputy to Sheriff Sam Consodine. Like his superior, he was corrupt and assisted the sheriff in his illegal enterprises, rustling cattle from Mr. Chance's ranch. When Mr. Chance and Belle caught Tom rustling cattle they were prevented from stopping him by Sheriff Consodine, who killed Mr. Chance and branded him a rustler to conceal their crimes.
