History:
(Sweet XVI I# (fb) - BTS) - In ancient Rome, young
Virgil worked at the chariot shop managed by Garmentius, but the lad
liked to experiment with modern painted designs.
(Sweet XVI I#1/1) - Princess Cornelia sent
invitations for her "Sweet XVI" (16th) birthday party to her friends
and important people, including Virgil. Later, one carrier pigeon
asked another to trade invitations for an easier delivery, but was
rebuffed.
(Sweet XVI I#1/3) - At his shop painting chariots, Virgil
was pleased to receive the invitation.
(Sweet XVI I#3/1) - Like many other students at Rome
High School, Virgil was unsure about who to vote for in the student
senate between rivals Antony and Seneca. Virgil agreed that a debate
was needed between the two candidates.
(Sweet XVI I#3/10) - Virgil and his friend Lollius
taught how to read Roman numerals with a sundial.
(Sweet XVI I#4/5) - Virgil admired his latest
dramatic modern art decoration of a chariot, much to the alarm of
Garmentius. Panicked at the imminent arrival of Senator Augustus,
Garmentius ordered Virgil mop the floor elsewhere while he hid the
colorful chariot under a sheet. But the senator sought a novel chariot
design for his teen-aged daughter's birthday and demanded to see under
the sheet. Augustus was greatly impressed and Garmentius took credit
for teaching Virgil. The senator then commissioned Virgil to paint a
fresco for the palace and left. Virgil confessed to his boss he did not
know what a fresco was.
(Sweet XVI I#4/6) - Garmentius showed Virgil how to paint
a fresco using plaster and water-based paints.
(Sweet XVI I#6 cover) - Virgil attended Cornelia's
party and danced with Diana (see comments).

A figure is shown in Cornelia's party in issue #6 with the face and hairstyle (and necklace) of Virgil, but he is colored as Caucasian with blond hair. Virgil attended the party, as shown on the cover, so I'm guessing it was a coloring error.
Presumably Virgil attended the great debate between Antony and Seneca in issue #3, but he's not shown, so perhaps he had to go work in the chariot shop.

CLARIFICATIONS
:
Virgil has no known connections to:
Garmentius appeared to own the shop where Virgil
worked. Garmentius sold the chariots that were painted and decorated by
Virgil, and mentored the boy in the basics of painting. Garmentius
disapproved of Virgil's independent modern art decorations on chariots.
One day, Senator Augustus arrived to buy a new chariot. Embarrassed by
Virgil's new design, he hid it, but the senator sought something modern
as it was for his daughter's 16th birthday. Demanding to see the hidden
chariot, he was greatly impressed by its decoration as it suited the
younger generation. Garmentius took credit for training Virgil. The
senator commissioned Virgil to paint a fresco. Soon after, Virgil
confided to Garmentius that he didn't know what a fresco was, so the
elder taught him.
