ERNIE VANCATA
While
there's not a great full body image of Ernie, when fully armored,
he
should look like any of the other Guardsmen, pictured here
Real Name: Ernie Vancata
Identity/Class: Human (former advanced technology (exoskeleton)-user
Occupation: Unrevealed;
former Guardsman at the Vault
Group Membership: Formerly the
Guardsmen
Affiliations: Doctor Octopus (Otto Octavius) feigned friendship with him
Enemies: Answer (Aaron
Nicholson), Doctor Octopus
Known Relatives: None

Base of Operations: Formerly the Vault (Maximum
Security Installation for the Incarceration of Superhuman Criminals),
Rocky Mountains, Colorado
First Appearance: Lethal Foes of Spider-Man#2 (October, 1993)
Powers/Abilities: Ernie was intelligent enough to study for a Masters degree in some field of science, but he was gullible enough to accept assistance from a criminal who would readily betray him for his own ends.
Ernie formerly wore one of the
Guardsmen armored
exoskeleton/armors, which granted him superhuman durability (including
resistance to sonic attacks) and strength and the ability fly and to
fire plasma blasts. The specifications on these abilities vary
somewhat, and so the details of Ernie's armor's abilities are
unrevealed.
History:
(Lethal Foes of Spider-Man#2
(fb) - BTS) - Employed as one of the Guardsmen at the Vault, Ernie
Vancata was working on a project to complete an unspecified Masters
program for an unspecified college/university. He made a closet
workshop within the Vault.
Among the prisoners he supervised was Otto Octavius (aka Doctor Octopus, although he had been stripped of his robotic arms at the time).
Octavius gained Ernie's attention,
learning of his science project and offering to assist him. Looking
over the project, Octavius gave Ernie pointers on how to complete +/-
improve the project. Octavius secretly modified things to his own ends,
intending to restore the corporeal form of the Answer (Aaron Nicholson)
so the Answer could break him out of the Vault.
(Lethal Foes of Spider-Man#2) -
In his Guardsman armor, Ernie directed Octavius to a room where he
could make a phone call. Octavius asked how the project was coming, and
Ernie told him that is was going really well and that since he had been
giving him pointers, he was sure to breeze through to his Masters
degree. Otto told Ernie that he was glad to help an aspiring
scientists.
(Lethal Foes of Spider-Man#2 - BTS) - Speaking to his lawyer, Michael Gerdes, Octavius was provided with a coded message containing information on a nuclear blaster from the Atomic Research Center provided by Otto's cousin Elias Hargrove.
(Lethal Foes of Spider-Man#2) - Assuring Ernie that he didn't mind looking over the project for him again, Octavius did so while mentally communicating with the invisible energy form of the Answer, telling him they would only get one chance at this. He noted that he had used Hargrove's figures to subvert this "starry-eyed young fool's project," but that if they didn't get it right this time, even Ernie would tumble to the fact that something was wrong.
When Octavius flipped a switch and
the machine started to glow, Ernie realized that something was wrong,
noting that it was not supposed to glow like that. As Otto advised his
"young friend" that it was doing exactly what it was supposed to do,
the Answer was restored to physical form.
Appreciating that he had been used
and abused, and that his job a career were over as he had blown
everything, Ernie nonetheless resolved to make sure that this scheme to
escape or whatever ended right there.
However, when Ernie fired plasma blasts from his armors gauntlets, the Answer's powers allowed him to adapt to the solution to the problem by generating a force shield that blocked the blasts.
The
Answer subsequently used the
shield as a battery ram to smash Ernie into the wall and into
unconsciousness, after which the Answer flew Octavius out of the Vault
to freedom.
(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z hardcover#5: Guardsmen entry) - Ernie Vancata was fired for his actions and almost certainly stripped of his Guardsmen armor.
