History:
(Ms. Marvel IV#31 (fb) - BTS) - Samantha was once a happy normal teenager with friends. She was on her school's drill team, worked at a makeup counter and had three boys and two girls ask her out to the freshman formal. But one day she was transformed by a fog of Terrigen Mist. Because of her partial Inhuman heritage, she became a superhuman and discovered that when she became angry she would grow a skunk-like tail and emit a cloud of sulfurous thiols. Even when not using her powers, her eyes and hair color had been apparently permanently altered. She soon lost her friends, had no date for the freshman formal and lost her job at the makeup counter. She once held a slumber party but no one else came. Samantha referred to herself derisively as "Skunk Girl." She took a job at Pizza Chance as a delivery person; Pizza Chance began putting more garlic on their pizzas to mask her odor.
(Ms. Marvel IV#31) - Skunk Girl was sent to deliver 5 pizzas to a party at the home of Kamala Khan where she was having a slumber party with her friends. When Skunk Girl heard this she became resentful toward Kamala, musing that her friends were probably wearing cute pajamas, gossiping about boys and watching movies while her mother made popcorn. Kamala answered that was correct expect that her mother was making samosas. Skunk Girl angrily flung the pizzas at Kamala and began to stalk away. Smelling some of Skunk Girl's odor, Kamala wondered aloud if the pizza place had put anchovies on the food. Hearing this, Skunk Girl grew angrier and took the pizzas back from Kamala, claiming that because Kamala's life was perfect she didn't get pizza.
Still incensed at Kamala, Skunk Girl threw a slice of pizza at one of her home's windows. Kamala emerged from the house garbed as Ms. Marvel, wondering why Skunk Girl was so upset with her. Sensing Skunk Girl's odor she wondered aloud if there had been a gas leak. Skunk Girl scoffed at seeing Ms. Marvel, asking sarcastically if she had "aliens to fight" which Ms. Marvel answered seriously, telling her the aliens had already been dealt with. Skunk Girl told Ms. Marvel she was tired of seeing other people enjoy their "perfect, normal lives" while she dealt with her offensive powers. Skunk Girl explained her origin to Ms. Marvel and Ms. Marvel noted she too gained her power from the Terrigen Mist, but Skunk Girl tearfully noted that Ms. Marvel had "awesome" powers, could be a super hero and then return to her normal life by simply removing her mask. Ms. Marvel tried to explain she had problems of her own, but when Skunk Girl asked if she'd want to trade powers Ms. Marvel had to admit she wouldn't.
Ms. Marvel agreed that she'd been lucky to obtain the powers she did. She pointed out that one of her friends, Squirrel Girl, also had a super-conspicuous tail but had joined the Avengers. Skunk Girl replied she didn't want to be an Avenger, she only wanted her old life back. Ms. Marvel sat down with her as they shared a pizza. Ms. Marvel explained how she had learned to accept that she couldn't have old life back but that there could still be room in their lives for all the normal things they enjoy. Skunk Girl retorted that was easy to say when "you don't smell like old garbage" but Ms. Marvel claimed the smell wasn't too bad "once you get used to it." Ms. Marvel suggested there might be ways to control or even neutralize the odor. Skunk Girl was surprised that Ms. Marvel wanted to help her and insisted that she didn't want to become an Avenger or to "weaponize my scent." In the end she conceded that if Ms. Marvel wanted to help her she wouldn't stop her.
Comments: Created by Rainbow Rowell and Bob Quinn.
Ms. Marvel IV#31 was a jam issue with various creators but Skunk Girl only appeared on the 6 pages by Rowell and Quinn.
We already had Squirrel Girl, it was only a matter of time before Skunk Girl appeared.
Skunk Girl described her tail when ranting about her powers and Ms. Marvel singled out the tail when comparing her to Squirrel Girl but it never actually appeared on panel. Maybe she needed to be much angrier. Maybe the artist didn't get clear instructions. Maybe it's Maybelline.
It's clear to me that as in New Jersey use of marijuana is legal, Skunk Girl should simply make friends among the other skunky-smelling teenagers; she must already smell like a pothead, right?
