History:
(Crash Ryan#1 (fb) - BTS) - Born in 1873, by the 1930s Sigmund van Camp was a businessman who ran a Cantina somewhere in Central America. Though he considered the place a "Hellhole" he nevertheless raised his daughter Estella there. As she got older, she developed a crush on Sigmund's pilot friend Crash Ryan, though he never reciprocated since he considered her still a child. In time her frustration at his failing to respond to her attempts to win his interest turned to annoyance and dislike. In May 1935 she turned eighteen. A month later Sigmund won a contract to handle the region's airmail, and hired Crash to handle the flying duties entailed.

(Crash Ryan#1) - Sigmund and others (presumably a mixture of his staff and regulars) celebrated the new contract, which they hoped would put the Cantina on the map. Crash, out on a run to bring in the mail, was absent.

   Shortly after the party ended Crash arrived and Sigmund watched as Estella picked an argument with him, prompting Sigmund to moan to another mutual friend, Barney Sloat, about how Estella had grown to be so headstrong, and how she and Crash brought out the worst in one another. In Sigmund's office Crash informed both Sigmund and Barney that while flying the mail there he had witnessed an advanced plane crash in the jungle, and asked to borrow Sigmund's riverboat to go look for it.

(Crash Ryan#1 - BTS) - He explained that he had witnessed other planes shoot the advanced one down. Despite Estella telling Crash he was crazy to get involved, Sigmund agreed to lend (or rent) the riverboat.

(Crash Ryan#1) - Crash and Barney returned from their expedition not in the riverboat but in the patched-up high-tech plane Crash had witnessed being shot down. In the Cantina's kitchen they explained that the boat had been destroyed by airmen working for a villain who had dubbed himself the Doom. It was his men who had also been in the dogfight Crash had witnessed during his mail run. Concerned that the Doom's men might follow and wanting to avoid bringing danger to his friend's door, Crash informed Sigmund that he would leave in the morning, but Sigmund insisted he should stay there where his friends could provide support if shooting did start. Estella however wanted Crash to leave immediately, but Sigmund berated her, stating that in no uncertain terms that he believed in standing by his friends. However Estella stood her ground and continued to berate Crash until he stormed out in silence after she told him not to drag her father down in flames with himself, in turn leaving Sigmund frustrated and annoyed at her actions.

(Crash Ryan#1 - BTS) - Sigmund and Estella's palpable but unspoken annoyance at one another prompted Barney to leave the room too.

(Crash Ryan#1) - Only a short while later the Cantina's residents were alerted by the noise that several aircraft were approaching through the night sky. Recognizing the designs from their encounters earlier in the day, Crash and Barney realized these were the Doom's forces, and ordered everyone to get inside into cover immediately. Sent to eliminate anyone who might have witnessed or been told about his activities, the Doom's forces opened fire while one of their autogiros began to land near the hanger. Inside the Cantina Sigmund joined Crash and Barney in issuing orders to the staff about distributing weapons and ammunition from the Cantina's arsenal, and the Cantina's defenders opened fire as ground troops issued from the autogiro. Realizing that they were nevertheless outgunned, Crash broke cover to run for a petroleum tanker, intending to ram it into the autogiro. Inside the Cantina Sigmund noticed Crash and called to him to come back, but as he did so a shot through the window hit Sigmund square in the chest, killing him.

   The Doom's other planes bombed the Cantina, blowing it apart. Crash and Barney found Estella in the ruins, crying over the corpse of her father. Sigmund was buried under a tree near the ruins of his home.

Comments: Created by Ron Harris. Published by Epic Comics, the series was also fully owned by Harris too, as was the norm for Epic titles and as confirmed by the issues' indicia.

   What reality is Crash Ryan set in? Let's get one stumbling block out the way immediately - being creator-owned in and of itself doesn't prevent it being set in Earth-616.

   Based on the story, it might be just about feasible to set it on Earth-616. It's set in 1935, a period which 616 has only sparsely covered, and in regions of the world away from most of the characters we've seen active in that era, such as Dominic Fortune, Doc Savage, etc. Certainly the events that take place are fairly major - Pearl Harbor is attacked, the Panama Canal destroyed, and Japan is conquered, all by the Doom, and Grantwell Masters believes that the Doom's actions have changed the balance of world power, noting that the U.S. and British navies have both been demolished, and claiming Japan might never be a world power again. All of these seem like huge events that would be irreconcilable with the real world history that 616 largely parallels, except we've seen similarly major incidents happen in 616 only for their repercussions to seem to vanish almost immediately - perhaps Grantwell underestimated how quickly the U.S. and British navies could be rebuilt, Japan could recover and re-arm and the Panama Canal be repaired? Another argument against the tale being set on 616 is that Doom had developed highly advanced planes and other technology well beyond the real world 1930s, and that with Doom's defeat Grantwell believes that tech is going to be spread worldwide by Doom's surviving henchmen, leading to a new generation of warplanes. However, how often do we see a 616 scientific genius create and even widely distribute advanced new tech beyond what exists in the real world, only for it to make no apparent difference to what is available to the average person or even average army? Basically, none of the events and tech we see in Crash Ryan would seem to definitively make it impossible for it to all take place on Earth-616.

    HOWEVER: Crash Ryan#1 starts with a introductory note by Harris where he states that the story is "a chance to rewrite history." That sounds like he intended Grantwell's comments to be accurate - the events of this story ended with a radical shift in the balance of world power, and in the event Ron Harris ever revisits the characters the repercussions of these changes will only serve to see Crash's world diverge even further from ours (and thus also from Earth-616).

   Crash Ryan#1 states that Sig's Cantina is "somewhere in Central America." It also depicts Crash stumbling into a dogfight between Jamal and Captain Carey "a few miles north," witnessing Jamal get shot down, and then immediately flying for "twenty minutes" to get to the Cantina (presumably heading south). All of this is information is fine until Carey informs her boss the Doom that Jamal was shot down over some ruins on "the Guanape." I could only find two Guanapes in the real world, one a set of islands of Peru and the other a town in Venezuela - and obviously both Peru and Venezuela are in South America, not Central. IF the dogfight had taken place south of Sig's instead of north, this might still have worked, with Sig's perhaps being in Panama, the southernmost tip of Central America, but if the dogfight took place over South America and Crash then flew south, there's no way he ended up in Central America. Given that we see a river below where Jamal is shot down, my No-Prize explanation is that Carey misspoke, and meant to say that Jamal was shot down over the Guayape River in Honduras rather than either Guanape location.

   Further evidence towards what country the cantina is in comes from some of Estella van Camp's dialogue. In June 1935 she complains to Crash that he missed her birthday the month prior, and also the Independence Day celebrations in town. She's clearly not referring the American Independence Day, both because a Central American country wouldn't be celebrating that and because it would be forthcoming the next month. So, presuming she's referring to the Independence Day of whatever country they are in (seems logical) AND that it was also fairly recent (likely, given the context, though not definite as she might be dredging up older failings from further in the past in order to berate Crash), that would mean we are looking for a Central American country with an Independence Day some time near to June or shortly prior to that. Unfortunately this doesn't fit well with any Central American country, all of which celebrate Independence Day in July or later. Unless we go to the Caribbean islands (Cuba in May and Dominican Republic in February) or South America (Paraguay in May) the closest we get to prior to June is Panama in November.

   Despite living in Central America Sigmund is clearly of European extraction; his surname suggests German, Danish or Dutch origins, and his accent, littered with words where D replaces TH and V replaces W probably lean towards the first of these options.

Sig's Cantina

Sig's Cantina was located somewhere in Central America, in a country that had once been colonized by Europeans but was (by 1935) independent, since it celebrated an Independence Day. A two story building, the ground floor included the bar, a kitchen and a dining area, while the upper floor had Sig's office and other undisclosed rooms, possibly bedrooms. There was also a basement where Sigmund stored extra ammunition for his rifles, presumably alongside other supplies. Next to the Cantina was a water tower, and there was also a runway directly to the east of the building and a hangar fifty feet to the north that housed Crash Ryan's plane. Across the yard to the front and left of the Cantina entrance was another smaller building, identified as the "small house," possibly the van Camp residence (assuming they didn't sleep in the Cantina's upstairs rooms). Though located in the jungle away from other human habitation, the Cantina was accessible by a dirt road and near to an unidentified town, which presumably provided the otherwise isolated Cantina the trade it needed to keep the doors open. It was also relatively near a river as Sigmund owned a riverboat.

   Another source for revenue for the Cantina was a recently won air mail contract, with Crash paid to fly mail to and from the Cantina, presumably then to be distributed in the aforementioned town. The Cantina had in excess of six staff and workers (since that was how many survived the attack by the Doom's forces).

   Presumably because it was so isolated Sigmund kept a small arsenal, which included Tommy guns with explosive ammunition. The manner in which Sigmund calmly ordered the staff around in defense of the Cantina during the attack suggested that this wasn't the first time the place had been under assault. Sadly it proved to be the last. The Doom's attack left the Cantina and hanger as rubble, though the small house was reportedly salvageable.
