History:
(Tron:
Betrayal#1 (fb) - BTS) - Shaddox was an architectural program
living in the Grid, a virtual reality world designed by human
programmer Kevin Flynn and built with the assistance of Flynn's
personal program CLU.
(Tron: Betrayal#1)
- Shaddox joined CLU in watching over the nearly completed Grid,
admiring the impressive view, with CLU acknowledging the other program's
part in the work. Reciprocating, Shaddox noted that the mind that built
the Grid was Flynn's, but the hand was CLU's. In response CLU insisted
they were all working towards the same goal, but Shaddox stuck to his
guns, noting that he just stated the facts. He then briefed CLU on minor
problems that had arisen and how they were being rectified, and noted
that one problem was the security program Tron, whose popularity meant
that when he attended the games (as he often did) he caused an excess of
foot traffic as other programs flocked to see him.
Many cycles later a problem of gridbugs
arose, something that the programs believed had been eliminated long
ago. Shaddox attended a meeting with CLU and Tron to discuss the issue.
Since the gridbugs seemed localized to the Iso sections of the Grid, CLU
wondered if the Isos themselves might either be attracting or even
causing the bugs. He noted that Isos, Isomorphic Algorithms, were beings
of uncertainty, looking like regular programs but being a relatively new
type that had only recently begun appearing, self-created rather than
being made by humans. Tron asked Shaddox for his opinion, but he
deflected, merely stating that it was a problem that they needed Flynn
to address as soon as possible. CLU however noted that they might need
to act independently, citing Flynn's prolonged absences from the Grid
and a concern that while Tron could currently handle the problem, it
might soon grow beyond his capabilities. Shaddox responded that he said
the gridbugs were a problem, but he had not suggested they deviate from
Flynn's wishes. Despite this CLU continued to ask how long they should
wait before taking destiny into their own hands, adding that though he
and Flynn shared the same dream to make the Grid everything it could be,
they couldn't wait forever on an absentee Flynn. Hearing this, Shaddox
and Tron shared a concerned glance.
Some time later Flynn returned to the Grid;
in the physical world it had only been a short time for Flynn, but it
had been hundreds of cycles in the Grid. CLU informed Flynn of the
ongoing problems, noting that he was frustrated, designed by Flynn to
keep order but then told to let the natural order be spontaneous, and
lacking the freedom to take action when he felt it necessary. As Shaddox
watched, CLU stated his belief that the Isos were the root of the
problem, not of Flynn's making and hence preventing the Grid being the
perfect system it was designed to be. Checking, Flynn realized that the
system was being stressed because it couldn't predict and hence properly
compensate for the number of programs in the Grid because the number of
Isos was too unpredictable. CLU took from this that the Isos were
tearing the Grid's code apart, but Flynn said it was something that
could be corrected and there was no imminent danger. Before he could do
more though, he was called back to the physical world because his wife
was in labor. Throughout this conversation, Shaddox watched impassively.
(Tron:
Betrayal#2) - CLU became increasingly dictatorial, his
personal security programs, the Black Guard, dealing with dissent with
a heavy hand, and actively targeting Isos for deletion. Shaddox
meanwhile began working as a bartender at the End of the Line club.
(Tron: Betrayal#2)
- At the End of the Line club Shaddox listened as Tron unburdened
himself, noting that they weren't doing what they were meant for.
Shaddox agreed, and asked what Tron's investigations had uncovered. Tron
revealed that the Black Guard had been planting bombs in the Iso
outposts, something he believed CLU had to know about. Shaddox asked him
what he was going to do, pointing out that CLU was in effect the Grid,
and without him everything would fall apart. Tron worried what would
become of the Isos if he didn't act, and Shaddox noted that CLU was made
in Flynn's image, perhaps too much, so now he was making decisions to
match. He told Tron that they both knew Flynn was the only true
authority on the Grid, but CLU might not let that stop him. Tron
wondered if Shaddox knew what CLU had planned, and Shaddox said he
didn't, but he knew what he'd think in CLU's place: Why allow more and
more Isos? Why not just nip the problem in the bud?

Like all the programs, Shaddox presumably looks like his human programmer, but we don't get to learn who that is. Some program's names are acronyms just as CLU's is, but we don't find out if that was true for Shaddox or not.

There's a character with a very similar name, Shaddix, who appears
briefly in the movie Tron: Legacy. He's a bartender at the End of the
Line club, and was played by the creator and co-writer of the original
Tron movie, Steven Lisberger in a small cameo. The character then showed
up in the prequel cartoon series Tron: Uprising. Additionally, Shaddix
and Shaddox have very similar goatees, and this, plus the fact that
Shaddox also briefly works as the bartender of the same club in Tron:
Betrayal, makes me think the similarities are no coincidence. Since the
comic writers would have had at least some access to the movie's scripts
so they could make the comic story fit as a prequel, I suspect either
Shaddox was a homage to Shaddix, or Shaddox was meant to be Shaddix. A
lot of comic adaptations of movies differ from the actual movies because
the writers were working on earlier scripts and don't hear about changes
made by writers or directors until the comic is already completed, so
perhaps Shaddix was originally called Shaddox in the script. Lisberger
(and hence Shaddix) is white, while Shaddox is black, but the comic
artists might not have known who was playing the part and only worked
from a general description. All speculation of course, but if there's no
connection then the names are a heck of a coincidence.
