2007)
Powers/Abilities: Though still a relatively young vampire, Sean was far stronger than any human, able to snap handcuffs like confetti. He was also faster than most humans, and could heal from almost any wound, though damage done by silver would take longer and scars inflicted by blessed objects, such as crucifixes or holy water, could leave permanent scars. Even severe damage such as having half his head shot off (with a regular bullet) did little to slow him down; silver to the heart brought him down, but per Anita Blake, even that would not have permanently killed him. Only a stake to the heart ended his unlife, and had he been old enough to become a master then decapitation would also have been necessary. He could hypnotize someone with a single moment of locking eyes with them, and this bond once forged would persist until one or other party died, allowing Sean to command that person even across a distance as wide as a city, perhaps further. Like all vampires he had exceptional hearing, able to clearly hear whispers from several feet away; humans could not sneak up on vampires, since the undead could hear them breathing and their heartbeats long before they got close. Sean did not need to breathe nor eat, and did not age, but did need to drink blood to maintain himself. Sunlight would severely burn him, as did blessed objects and silver.

History:
(Anita Blake:
Vampire Hunter - The First Death#1 (fb) - BTS) - Sean was
born in a world where the existence of vampires and other supernatural
creatures was public knowledge. At some point in his late teens or
early twenties Sean became one of them. At some point, perhaps even
from the moment he was turned, he fell under the sway of an
unidentified female master vampire and her "kiss" (the term for a
group of vampires, like a gaggle of geese). When he was turned
vampires were considered legally dead, and thus vampire hunters could
slay them without needing cause or facing repercussions from law
enforcement, but more than a decade after Sean was turned (see
comments) a pivotal court case, Clarke v. Addison, redefined
what death meant so that vampires were now considered living in the
eyes of the law. This made slaying them illegal without just cause,
such as proof of them murdering humans. Able if they chose to sustain
themselves with survivable amounts of blood taken from willing
volunteers, vampires came out of the shadows, and while cops could
investigate suspected vampire-related crimes the task of executing
undead criminals was restricted to state-licensed executioners. Sean
went to work at Guilty Pleasures, a vampire strip bar, but his kiss
enjoyed the thrill of the hunt too much to stop murdering humans for
their blood, though they were careful to have their human servants
bury the remains of their dozen victims so the authorities would not
learn of their activities.
However, a handful of years
after Clarke v. Addison and around twenty after Sean became a vampire,
one member of his kiss, Valentine, started to indulge an even sicker
passion, targeting young boys and deliberately leaving their mutilated
corpses where they would be discovered, resulting in a police
investigation led by Detective Dolph Storr, who in turn called in the
help of licensed vampire slayer Anita Blake, whose fearsome reputation
within the vampire community had earned her the nickname the
Executioner. One of Sean's kiss, Adam, joined the crowd of onlookers
hanging around behind police barriers at the site of the seventh
killing, and was spotted by Blake, which prompted the police to look
into him. Since Adam also worked at Guilty Pleasures this led the
investigation to the bar and checking the alibis of all the vampires
working there. Sean's work absences meant he had no alibi for the
dates of the child murders (see comments) so he was brought to
the police station for questioning.
(Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter - The First Death#1) -
In the interrogation room Sean tried to explain to Detective Storr
that his absences were days his "junker" of a car had been in for
repairs, but Storr noted that Sean had missed work eight times, only
one of which had been when his car was in the shop. Storr then asked
for Sean's whereabouts the night before (when the last murder had
taken place), but Sean was distracted by the small woman, apparently
not a cop, watching their discussion; creeped out by her presence,
he demanded to know who she was (see comments). However, the
moment Storr mentioned her name Sean freaked out, terrified to
realize he was in the same room as the Executioner. Throwing the
table he had been sitting at up in the air he grabbed one of the
cops present, Officer Barnes, and locked eyes, instantly hypnotizing
him. Barnes drew his gun on Storr, but Blake got Sean's attention by
holding out her crucifix towards him, giving the cops a chance to
restrain Barnes. Leaping at Blake, Sean managed to snatch the chain
holding the crucifix around Blake's neck, break it, and throw the
cross away, then tried to bite her throat, but Blake punched him,
and the bracelet on her wrist that was adorned with several more
crucifixes made contact, burning Sean's face and left eye. Recoiling
in agony, Sean cowered in the corner, and when Storr threatened to
shoot him in he moved again Sean tried to demand his civil rights,
insisting they weren't allowed to do that. However Blake countered
that she could legally execute him right then and there, and
threatened to burn him again with the cross (a bluff). Sean pleaded
that "they" would kill him if he talked, but Blake intimidated him
enough that he soon cracked, giving the police the location of the
dump site where his kiss had buried their victims...
(Anita
Blake: Vampire Hunter - The First Death#2 (fb) - BTS)
- as well as names of the other vampires involved.
(Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter - The First
Death#1) - However, while he admitted to there being
twelve victims at the dump site, Sean was confused when Storr
asked him why his kiss hadn't buried all the victims, then
horrified when Storr brought up the child slayings, vehemently
denying any involvement in something as sick as that.
(Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter - The First
Death#1 - BTS) - Putting Sean into the trunk of a police
car since it was still light outside, the cops went to the dump
site and exhumed the bodies, confirming Sean's claim of twelve
adult victims.
(Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter - The First
Death#1) - With sunset, Blake and Storr's junior,
Detective Zerbrowski, got Sean out the trunk to question
further, asking Sean where his kiss stayed during the day. Sean
again pleaded that his master would kill him, but before Blake
could lay on the pressure his master took him over remotely.
Breaking free of his handcuffs with casual ease, Sean leapt at
Blake and bore her to the ground.
(Anita
Blake: Vampire Hunter - The First Death#2) - Before
Sean could bite Blake half his head was blown off by Zerbrowski. This
merely annoyed the vampire, who rose up intending to attack the
detective. However, doing so allowed Blake to use her own gun, taking
Sean down with a silver bullet shot to the heart. Talking through Sean,
his master told Blake that she saw the Executioner and knew that Sean
had betrayed his kiss. With Sean still not dead, Blake pumped several
more shots into him, then staked him for good measure.

Created by Laurell K.Hamilton, Jonathon Green and Wellington Alves.
The books are somewhat inconsistent in regards to exactly when vampires gained legal standing, but it seems to be three or four years prior to the first book, and thus only one or two prior to The First Death. Since Anita pegs Sean as having been a vampire for around twenty years, this would mean that around eighteen of those were prior to vampires gaining legal status.
Sean being absent from work the same days as the child killings
was apparently a coincidence, as he was both
innocent and ignorant of those, unless Valentine was timing his kills
when the others in his kiss were on hunts so that they wouldn't learn
of his activities - even Sean was disgusted by the idea of someone
targeting kids, and Anita later confirmed that Sean's master would not
have been happy with Valentine if she knew his blatant crimes were
responsible for drawing police attention to her kiss.
The reason Sean was creeped
out by Anita Blake's presence during the police interrogation is
because Blake herself isn't fully human. She is a necromancer, with
the ability to raise zombies, which was her official "day" job, and
this affinity with the dead is part of why she could usually sense the
presence of vampires nearby, but vampires could similarly sense
something "off" about her.
