History:
(Ringo Kid Western I#1) - Dawn Star was a Comanche woman who married Cory Rand, a lawyer. Dawn Star went to live with Cory in a midwestern city where he had a law practice but his marriage was considered scandalous to other white people, causing Rand's firm to disbar him in 1866. When Cory told Dawn Star the news she reminded him that he himself had been born on the prairies and that they should move out there. Cory agreed and they moved to the territory where Cory's father had origially built a ranch.
Not long after their arrival, Dawn Star gave birth to she and Cory's son. The Comanche midwife declared that he was "lusty as a wolf pup, strong s Inuha, the mighty oak!" News of the boy's birth was sent via drum to Comanche in the area and the birth was greeted by a shooting star in the sky and a wolf baying at the moon - both good omens. In the baby, Dawn Star saw the best of herself and Cory: "Do you see how Manitou has molded us both in our son?"
Cory and Dawn Star's son grew up primarily around Comanche boys but alongside his father's hands he took a fancy to shooting pistols at cans, enjoying the ringing noise it made. One of Cory's men dubbed him "the Ringo Kid." When Ringo was still a teenager he went to a nearby town and was jeered by white boys his age. Ringo fought the boys but his father's enemy Shad Rathburn saw him and took the opportunity to attack Ringo with a whip. Cory intervened and shot Rathburn to death but in retaliation Rathburn's men invaded Cory's ranch and burned down his home with Dawn Star still inside. When Cory arrived at the fire Dawn Star was dying. With her dying words she begged Cory to take care of her son. By the time Cory exited the blaze, Dawn Star was dead.
(Ringo Kid Western I#1/2 - BTS) - On the one year anniversary of Dawn Star's death, Cory and the Ringo Kid met at her grave.

In Ringo Kid Western I#1/2 Dawn Star's tombstone appears to read 1845-1868. That can't be the actual dates since Ringo was a teenager when she died and he was born after 1866. Maybe it was supposed to be 1845-1886.
Dawn Star's nation is inconsistently identified in the series. How inconsistently? In Ringo Kid Western I#1 she's Comanche; in the very next feature, I#1/2, she's Cherokee!
