   (Questworld Japan)
Spider-Gwen Annual II#1 (November 2023)

Powers/Abilities/Functions: Questworld had a variety of theme park rides, including roller coasters and Ferris wheels. There were also live performances such as jousting. There was a section or ride called Avalon and the Faery Realm that had an additional entrance charge.

The park was primarily staffed by robots designed by Tony Stark and built by Stark Industries. The British park's robots included Merlin, the Black Knight, Guinevere and Sir Gawain; most of these were destroyed but Gawain went on to join the Knights of Pendragon. Presumably other members of Arthur's court, including Arthur himself, were also present off panel.

The Japanese park had additional sections with different themes. In the Arthurian Knight's Out section there was a Merlin, Beast Master, and dragon Samjokgu, while in the waterworld-themed Apocalypsea there was the Cap'n and Waffles, and in the gangster-themed Capone's there was Capone.

History:
(Overkill#2/2 (fb) - BTS) - Questworld was Britain's first and only Arthurian theme park, located in Darkmoor in the Cheviot Hills of Northumberland in Northern England. Part of its selling point was robotic versions of Arthurian characters created by Stark Industries.

(Knights of Pendragon II#1 (fb) - BTS) - Tony Stark personally designed the robots, with safety a primary concern.

(Overkill#2/2) - To publicize the park the Knight of Pendragon Union Jack made a one-day only appearance, during which he took part in a jousting competition against the robotic Black Knight. As the public watched, the Black Knight knocked Jack off his horse, then dismounted for a sword fight. Union Jack sliced the Knight's left arm off, but then the Knight slashed his chest, something the safety features should have prevented. Annoyed, Jack cut both its legs off and began walking away, despite the Knight hopping along on its stumps demanding the fight continue.

(Knights of Pendragon II#1) - Before he could leave the jousting field Union Jack was attacked by several more robotic knights.

(Overkill#2/2) - Across the entire park the robots went berserk, though Jack remained the focus for a large number, causing reporter Breeze James to speculate he was somehow the catalyst. One robot however, Gawain, refrained from attacking the customers, instead focused on the damaged Guinevere robot.

(Knights of Pendragon II#1) - Union Jack began hacking his way through the robots, but was eventually their numbers prevailed and he was pinned to the ground by several opponents. Another robotic knight was about to impale the prone hero with a large spear when suddenly almost all the robots ceased moving, the attack ending as abruptly and mysteriously as it had begun. However, by then the damage was done, with all the customers either fled, fleeing or injured.

(Overkill#2/2) - Only Gawain kept moving, picking up the deactivated Guinevere and departing the park with her.

(Knights of Pendragon II#1) - Union Jack promptly video-called Tony Stark to inform him it looked like the robots had been sabotaged, though Stark insisted it was impossible to hack their neuro-core. Informed that two of the robots were unaccounted for Stark set off for the U.K. as Iron Man.

(Knights of Pendragon II#2) - Iron Man met up with Union Jack in the park ruins and tested the robots' failsafes by having several of them attack him at the same time. Sure enough, the failsafes cut in when it appeared the robots might cause injury, freezing in place. Checking the circuits again, Iron Man concluded that short of a paranormal intervention the robots shouldn't have been able to go berserk. He noted that Stark would pick up the tab for the structural and environmental damage, but added that his main concern was to find out the cause and recapture to two AWOL robots.

(Spider-Gwen Annual II#1 (fb) - BTS) - Another Questworld was built in Niigata Prefecture in Japan, complete with more realistic animatronics. It was split into Knight's Out (the Arthurian section), plus Apocalypsea (a Waterworld/"Mad Max on water" section), Capone's (a 1930s mobster-themed section) and the Electro-Tram 2000 ride. Eventually it shut down and became haikyo (literally "ruins" but in this context a term used for abandoned theme parks).

(Spider-Gwen Annual II#1) - The superheroes Ghost Spider (of Earth-65) and White Fox (of Korea) were both transported to the park by Agatha Harkness, who tried to pit them against one another. While this worked initially, with them fighting from the Arthurian section through Apocalypsea, by the time they reached Capone's they were working together, and easily dealt with the robots there, before escaping down the Electro-Tram ride, at the end of which they were confronted by Harkness.

Comments: Created by Dan Abnett, John Tomlinson, Phil Gascoine and Adolfo Buylla.

It's not revealed whether Questworld was owned by Stark Industries or whether Tony Stark was just contracted to design and build the robots. The former is definitely possible - while Stark Industries isn't known for theme parks, they might have been trying to diversify, and Tony Stark's prior interactions with King Arthur's Camelot via time travel could have inspired his choice of theme.

Additionally, while it's not explicitly stated, it seems very likely that the park had just opened when the robots went wild. Getting a famous superhero to make a one-day appearance to help sell the park comes across as the kind of thing you'd do for a special occasion, such as the park's grand opening, plus Breeze James' comments about how Stark Industries did a good job on the robots comes across like those are new, plus there was a competition with an expensive car as the prize. But maybe the park had been there for a while, and it's just the robots that are new, part of rebranding/relaunching of the park with Stark backing?

I'm not quite sure why the robots went berserk and then stopped. Gawain is confirmed to have been possessed by a Pendragon spirit, but in theory that shouldn't have cause the other robots to go all Westworld - unless they were linked together so the feedback sent them doolally?

Like a number of Marvel U.K. stories published around this time, this tale was published both in the British anthology magazine Overkill and an American formatted title, in this case Knights of Pendragon (volume 2). Overkill came out bi-weekly and usually took around two issues to cover the equivalent of one American issue, with some pages being missed out from the British version entirely (generally those involving American characters guest starring in the story). This means that figuring out first appearances can be tricky - whether a character debuted in Overkill or the equivalent American issue sometimes depends on what page of the story a character makes their entrance. The story that introduces Questworld began in Overkill#1, but Questworld actually makes its first appearance in Overkill#2. Both of these episodes are also published in Knights of Pendragon II#1. Overkill#2 has a cover date of 8th May 1992, but like American comics the cover date is usually some time after the date the comic actually goes on sale (in order to keep the comic looking "new" to potential buyers, thus increasing shelf life), and the indicia confirms that it came out in April, presumably shortly after Overkill#1's cover date of 24th April 1992. Meanwhile Knights of Pendragon II#1 has a cover date of July 1992, but actually went on sale on 12th May of that year. However, the pages of Knights of Pendragon II#2 that Questworld appeared in were not included in the Overkill version as they featured Iron Man.

There's nothing in the Spider-Gwen Annual the confirms that the two Questworlds are connected - I'm not even sure writer Karla Pacheco knew of the one from the Knights of Pendragon story - but two theme parks both called Questworld and featuring animatronic versions of Merlin? Even if the second one wasn't intended to be part of the same theme park franchise as the first, I think it just makes sense to treat them as such; after all, the real world has many examples of theme parks with branches globally.

This profile was completed on 09/27/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary's celebratory event to represent Knights of Pendragon.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Questworld has no known connections to:

Black Knight robot

The Black Knight was Union Jack's jousting opponent, but he sliced it apart once it tried to genuinely attack him. Despite losing three limbs, it seemed to consider this only a flesh wound.

--Overkill#2/2

Guinevere robot

The Guinevere robot originally carried a sign advertising one of the park features, but when she went berserk she used it as a weapon to bludgeon Union Jack. After she was damaged Gawain carried her away; treating her like a real person he subsequently tried to help heal her by giving her something to drink, which shorted her out.

--Overkill#2/2  (Knights of Pendragon II#1-2

Merlin robot (U.K.)

The Merlin robot was a park announcer, informing the public of park events.

--Overkill#2/2

Merlin robot (Japan)

The Merlin robot in the Japanese Questworld told Ghost-Spider she needed to fight "Renard LeBlanc" (White Fox), part of the ploy to pit the heroes against one another.

--Spider-Gwen Annual II#1

Beast Master

The Beast Master robot told White Fox to fight "Le Spidre" (Ghost Spider), fulfilling the same role Merlin did on the other side of the conflict.

--Spider-Gwen Annual II#1

Samjokgu the Cursed

Samjokgu the Cursed was a white dragon robot. After it swallowed the Orb that served as the MacGuffin to get the two heroes to fight White Fox sliced its neck open to retrieve the Orb.

--Spider-Gwen Annual II#1

Cap'n and Waffles

The Cap'n (front and center), Waffles (bald, left) and another unidentified robot patrolled the waters of Apocalypsea on jet-skies. When the Cap'n stole the Orb, the two heroes pursued her to Capone's.

--Spider-Gwen Annual II#1

Capone

Capone was a gangster robot. He and his men were easily beaten by the two heroes.

Comments: Not actually named, but he seemed to be in charge and the place was called Capone's, so...
