History:

(Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars I#12 (fb) - BTS) - When the mysterious, near-omnipotent Beyonder transported a group of Earth's greatest heroes and villains to Battleworld, he forced them to fight one another with the promise of granting the victors their greatest desires. Battleworld itself was a planet the Beyonder had assembled from fragments of numerous worlds. During the conflict, the X-Men's small dragon companion Lockheed encountered a green female dragon. The two apparently formed a close bond during their time on Battleworld.

(Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars I#12) - When the conflict on Battleworld finally ended and the surviving heroes prepared to return to Earth, Lockheed rejoined the X-Men accompanied by the green dragon. Unwilling to be separated from Lockheed, the female dragon attempted to join the X-Men as Reed Richards teleported the heroes back to Earth.

(Uncanny X-Men I#181) - The X-Men materialized in Honshu, near Tokyo, where they discovered that Lockheed's female companion had accompanied them back from Battleworld. However, the teleportation had apparently affected the dragon, causing her to increase dramatically in size until she towered over the surrounding buildings. Seeking a suitable location to construct a nest presumably to mate with Lockheed, the enormous dragon began gathering materials from the city, causing widespread destruction. Her activities attracted the attention of the Japanese military, who attempted to stop her rampage.

The X-Men, assisted by the Japanese hero Sunfire (Shiro Yoshida), attempted to stop the dragon's destruction but their efforts proved ineffective against her immense size and strength. Lockheed eventually confronted the enormous dragon himself, seemingly rejecting her advances. Distraught by his rejection, the dragon flew away. But while the Japanese army was tracking her and Lockheed's movements they witnessed as massive energy discharge after which they couldn't find either of the dragons. Lockheed, however retuned to the X-Men's side as Wolverine noticed the dragon had been building a nest.

(X-Men: Kitty Pryde - Shadow & Flame I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Puff eventually returned to her normal, diminutive size and settled in Northern Japan, Hokkaido. There she was accidentally discovered by a scouting team working for the Japanese Department of Supernatural Sciences (JDSS) investigating a Unkaiyo spirit. The agents captured Puff and transported her to their headquarters in Tokyo for examination. After studying footage of the enormous dragon's earlier rampage through Tokyo, the department's dragonologist concluded that the small green creature was the same dragon that had disappeared years earlier. Before the investigation could proceed, Puff was stolen from the facility by ninjas belonging to the Path of Destiny.

(X-Men: Kitty Pryde - Shadow & Flame I#1 - BTS) - Seeking to lure Kitty Pryde and Lockheed to Japan, the Path of Destiny sent Kitty a photograph of Puff, knowing that the dragon's reappearance would attract her attention. Kitty subsequently learned from JDSS agent Ryoko Oshiba that Puff had been discovered in Hokkaido and taken into custody by the department before being stolen by the mysterious ninja organization. Whether Puff was genuinely being held against her will by the Path of Destiny or was already cooperating with its leader, Nao, remains unclear.

(X-Men: Kitty Pryde - Shadow & Flame I#4) - After Lockheed was captured by the Path of Destiny, Puff was reunited with her former companion at the organization's headquarters, where both dragons were found chained inside a cell. Nao threatened to kill them unless Kitty Pryde agreed to cooperate with the organization. Hoping to secure their freedom, Kitty offered to obtain the legendary sword Ginrei from the Silver Samurai (Kenuichio Harada). Before departing, Kitty insisted on seeing the dragons and removed their chains, reassuring Lockheed that she would return for him. Despite her apparent captivity, Puff later appeared comfortable in Nao's company, allowing the ninja leader to pet her while discussing plans to betray Kitty.

(X-Men: Kitty Pryde - Shadow & Flame I#5) - Puff was reunited with Lockheed after Nao had her brought into his cell, apparently unaware that Kitty Pryde was preparing a rescue operation. When Kitty and JDSS agent Ryoko Oshiba subsequently returned to the Path of Destiny's headquarters with Ginrei, the ninjas discovered that Kitty had already freed both dragons. However, Nao summoned Puff with a whistle, and the green dragon obediently flew to her side, suggesting that Puff had developed some degree of familiarity or loyalty toward the ninja leader. During the ensuing battle, Puff repeatedly interfered with Kitty's confrontation against Nao, prompting Lockheed to pursue his companion. When Nao angrily struck Puff for getting in her way, the dragon retaliated by breathing fire at the ground, setting the wooden surroundings ablaze and apparently causing Nao's death. Following the defeat of the Path of Destiny, Kitty secured both dragons' freedom from the JDSS. She subsequently allowed Lockheed to decide whether to remain with Puff or accompany her back to America. Although the two dragons briefly flew away together, Lockheed ultimately bid Puff farewell and returned to Kitty, leaving his green companion behind in Japan.

(X-Men: Gold II#30 - BTS) - At some unrevealed point following their separation in Japan, Puff and Lockheed renewed their relationship and became mates. The two dragons eventually produced two offspring.

(X-Men: Gold II#30) - Puff accompanied Lockheed and their two young dragons when they visited Kitty Pryde on the day of her wedding to Peter Rasputin. The two dragons introduced their offspring to Pryde and later attended the wedding ceremony. However, when Pryde found herself unable to go through with the marriage, she fled the ceremony by phasing through the ground, leaving her guests, including Puff and the guests, stunned by her sudden departure.

Comments: Created by Chris Claremont, John Romita Jr., and Dan Green.

Puff first appeared as an unidentified green female dragon accompanying Lockheed at the conclusion of the original Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars. In X-Men: Kitty Pryde - Shadow & Flame, Kitty playfully dubbed her Puff in reference to the famous song "Puff, the Magic Dragon", written by Peter Yarrow and Leonard Lipton and popularized by the folk group Peter, Paul and Mary in 1963.

There is a minor continuity error during X-Men: Kitty Pryde - Shadow & Flame, Kitty speaks as though she personally encountered the dragon during the event in Tokyo. However, Kitty was not present during Puff's rampage in Japan.

Interestingly, although Puff was initially presented as a prisoner of the Path of Destiny, her behavior throughout X-Men: Kitty Pryde - Shadow & Flame I#4-5 suggests that her relationship with the organization's leader, Nao, was considerably more complicated. Nao appeared affectionate toward Puff, who willingly responded to her whistle and even interfered with Kitty Pryde's attempts to defeat her. This raises the possibility that Nao had deliberately befriended or trained Puff, using the dragon's apparent captivity as bait to lure Kitty and Lockheed into a trap. However, whether Puff was knowingly cooperating with Nao or was simply being manipulated remains unrevealed. Whatever their relationship, Puff ultimately turned against Nao after the ninja leader struck her, demonstrating that her apparent loyalty had its limits.
