Powers/Abilities: Prosit is a devious and cunning liar and totally without scruples.
He was experienced with
guns and explosives and was clever enough to evade capture or death at
the hands of multiple pursuers through dangerous terrain, such as
mountains, deserts and caves.
History:
(The Ghost With Golden Bullets (fb)) - At some point in the past,
Werner Amadeus, Baron van Luckner and his valet Gustaaf Havel found
Coronado's map in a Dutch monastery and came looking for gold in the
Superstition Mountains in Arizona. Having found an ancient mine left by
the natives in a place called Dead Horse Mesa, Gustaaf killed his master
(or thought he had) and decided to impersonate him when returning to
civilization.
(The Ghost With Golden Bullets (fb) - BTS) - However, Luckner was not dead but had lost his memories and his gaunt, ghastly presence scared even the local Apache, who then avoided the Mesa. Meanwhile, the fake Luckner (Gustaaf) enlisted partners to go after the gold, but once in the mountains, he killed them.
(The Lost Dutchman's Mine - BTS) <circa 1867 A.D.> -
Mike Donovan, known as Blueberry, had been stationed as marshal in the
little town of Palomito, Arizona with Jimmy McClure as his deputy.
(The Lost Dutchman's Mine (fb) - BTS) - Prosit made
a lot of enemies. When the local Purdy Hanson was killed, Prosit was a
prime suspect in his murder.
(The Lost Dutchman's Mine) - Barnett,
one of the men Prosit had taken funds from, confronted Prosit and caused
a commotion at the local saloon, leading Blueberry and Jimmy to
investigate, and Prosit identified himself as "Baron
Werner Amadeus van Luckner."As the others wanted to lynch Prosit,
Blueberry narrowly prevented this and imprisoned Prosit (partially for
his own safety).
Two bounty hunters, Wally Blount and
"Crazy" Cole Timbley, then arrived to take Prosit to Durango, but
Blueberry refused to give him up. When Prosit offered Jimmy half of his
mine, the deputy helped Prosit escape, and they headed out into the
desert together. 
As Blueberry pursued them, Prosit -- despite Jimmy's interference -- nearly buried Blueberry alive in an old mine.
(The Lost Dutchman's Mine - BTS) - After Blueberry escaped, he was taken prisoner by the bounty hunters and then left to die in the desert, but he was eventually rescued by an old friend, Guffie Palmer.
(The Lost Dutchman's Mine) - Meanwhile, Prosit and
Jimmy reached the Mesa and were attacked by the Apache. After they
escaped, Prosit tricked Jimmy, almost blinding him and then abandoned him
to die.
(The Lost Dutchman's Mine - BTS) - Jimmy was "rescued" by the bounty hunters, who staked him out in the desert and tried to make him provide information about Prosit and his mine. Blueberry arrived, rescued Jimmy and then shot and killed Cole in the ensuing conflict. Blueberry, Jimmy and Wally continued after Prosit.
(The Ghost With Golden Bullets) - As his pursuers tracked
Prosit up Dead Man's Mesa, Prosit tried to kill them by arranging a rock
slide. However, they survived this, and Blueberry captured Prosit,
intending to bring him back to Palomito to be tried. However, they were
pursued by Apache and trapped in the Mesa, during which time they encountered a ghostly figure shooting bullets made
of gold (the real Luckner). The group got separated, with Blueberry & Jimmy
on one side, and Wally and Prosit on the other.
Eventually,
Prosit manipulated Wally into being bitten by rattlesnake. By this
point, Prosit suspected the true identity of the "Ghost."

Blueberry
& Jimmy came across the dying Wally who gave them enough info to
track Prosit to an ancient Indian pueblo.
(The Ghost With Golden Bullets) - A cat and mouse game
began between Prosit and the Ghost, and the Ghost eventually tricked
Prosit into entering a cave.
(The Ghost With Golden Bullets - BTS) -
Blueberry and Jimmy
came across a blood trail left by the wounded Ghost and followed it.
Deep underground they met the Ghost, who had recovered his memories and
told them that he was the real Luckner and that Prosit was his valet,
Gustaaf.
(The Ghost With Golden Bullets) - Meanwhile,
Prosit set up an explosion to bury Blueberry, Jimmy and Luckner alive.
(The Ghost With Golden Bullets - BTS) - Before dying, the real Luckner told Blueberry and Jimmy how to escape the Mesa through secret tunnels etc.
(The Ghost With Golden Bullets) - As he departed the
Mesa, Prosit was attacked by Apache but rescued by the US Cavalry, who
then let him go.
As Prosit prepared to board a ship to Europe in New Orleans, Blueberry
and Jimmy showed up and arrested him. Blueberry explained to Prosit how
the real Luckner had helped them escape.

In the original French publications
both Luckner and "Prosit" are from Prussia as the term "Dutch" was then
used by Americans to refer to people of German origin, who called
themselves "Deutsch" in their own language; it was not until the turn of
the century that the word "Dutch" regained its original meaning -- the
phonetic similarity is generally accepted as the rationale for the
confusion.
In the translation, the Lofficiers chose to change
the characters from Germans to Dutch, changing the original expletives
and altering the spellings accordingly in order to accommodate an
American public now more familiar with the legend.
The locals nicknamed him Prosit because of his drinking habits and Dutch origins; he must have used the term while drinking with others.
While I have not personally reviewed any of Blueberry's stories, Jean-Marc did not think that there was anything that strictly contradicted the Blueberry stories from occurring on Earth-616, so I am not going to provide an alternate reality designation until/unless someone can otherwise confirm?
In the MOEBIUS/DR STRANGE (unpublished) crossover we established that Moebius' characters are, well, part of Moebius' mind. I suppose they could exist separately somewhere in the Megaverse, but in the 616 universe, they're fictional constructs.
Certainly if they were fictional in Reality-616, there's a reality that
just happens to mirror the events of their stories...but I would prefer
to avoid designating them as part of an alternate reality if they fit
into Earth-616 history. Who's to say that Moebius created them in his
mind but that he didn't, at least subconsciously, weave them into
reality?
I would also be inclined to treat Blueberry like Sherlock
Holmes or Hodiah
Twist, both of who exist in fictional stories and have Earth-616
historical counterparts.

Although generally ignored, there
are naming conventional for titular names, like Lords and Barons. Via
numerous and patient explanations from our own Loki, I have a basic
understanding of these, and it is generally correct to say (for example)
Helmut, Baron Zemo, rather than Baron Helmut Zemo.
I'm not positive the Germans and/or Dutch follow the
same rules (or the Austrians, although Elsa, the Baroness Schraeder, is
only called those names in the Sound of Music, and not "Baroness Elsa
Schraeder"...for whatever that's worth!), but I'm looking into it.
So, anyhoo, that's why I have the Ghost listed as "Werner Amadeus, Baron
van Luckner." If Prosit called himself "Baron
Werner Amadeus van Luckner," we can chalk that up as foreshadowing that
he was not the real deal. If the real van Luckner referred to himself
the same way, we have to remember that he was nearly killed and was
addled and semi-amnesiac for an extended period.

Blueberry is a Western comic series created in the Franco-Belgian bandes dessinées (BD) tradition by the Belgian scriptwriter Jean-Michel Charlier and French comics artist Jean "Mœbius" Giraud. It chronicles the adventures of Mike Steve Donovan alias Blueberry on his travels through the American Old West. Blueberry is an atypical western hero; he is not a wandering lawman who brings evil-doers to justice, nor a handsome cowboy who "rides into town, saves the ranch, becomes the new sheriff and marries the schoolmarm".
