History:
(Marvel Boy I#2/3) - In the year 3106, Paular Nine's schoolteacher Miss
Em announced that he was the student with the highest scholastic
standing in school. The school's tradition was that each year, the
student with the highest scholastic standing would be sent back in time
on their "annual history excursion" so they could witness their
civilization's past as it actually happened. Miss Em told Paular Nine to
be early at the science building the following day for his briefing on
his history excursion.
The next day at the science building, Miss Em and a scientist gave Paular Nine his briefing. They informed him he would be going to the year 2000, the year of the Earth-Venus Cosmic War. Paular Nine was told to watch, take notes and return in 24 hours. Paular Nine knew of the Earth-Venus Cosmic War and was aware it was a conflict Earth won very quickly. They dressed Paular Nine in fashions appropriate to the era then reminded him not to interfere or betray his presence in any way so that he wouldn't change the way things actually happened in the past. Paular Nine promised not to interfere then entered the time cabinet, which transported him into the year 2000.
Immediately upon arriving in the past, Paular Nine assumed he was still on the planet Earth, unaware he'd actually been sent to observe the war on Venus. He spotted a cosmic ray gun and assumed it was the weapon which had helped the Earth triumph over Venus. Observing two soldiers, Paular Nine overheard them talk about the cosmic ray gun, stating it was broken and that there was no one nearby who could repair the weapon. The soldiers feared the enemy would attack within the hour and defeat them. Forgetting his promise to Miss Em, Paular Nine exited his cover and offered to help the soldiers fix the cosmic ray gun. The soldiers were surprised at his presence and wondered how he could possibly fix the weapon but Paular Nine insisted he knew what was wrong and it would be an easy fix. The soldiers' captain gave him permission to repair the ray gun but ordered his men to keep an eye on him in case he tried to sabotage it.
As promised, Paular Nine quickly repaired the weapon and readied it to fire. The captain told Paular Nine to fire the weapon himself, saying "you've earned it!" Excited, Paular Nine aimed the gun at the target, which he believed was Venus -- but was actually the Earth. The gun opened fire and the Earth exploded into dust. Paular Nine celebrated, stating he'd helped destroy Venus. At this, the soldiers were puzzled and amused then told Paular Nine he was on the planet Venus and he'd just destroyed the Earth.

I thought I'd fought in the Earth-Venus Cosmic War of 2000 but it turned out I was just in a very heated flame war on usenet.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Paular Nine should not be confused with:

In 3106, Miss Em was Paular Nine's schoolteacher. Miss Em chose Paular Nine for the year's "annual history excursion" because he had the highest scholastic standing in her class. Miss Em briefed Paular Nine about his trip, which was to witness the Earth-Venus Cosmic War of 2000. She told Paular Nine to watch, take notes and return in 24 hours without interfering or betraying his presence in any way. When Paular Nine subsequently assisted in the destruction of the Earth, he might have created a time paradox that eliminated Miss Em from existence.
Chances are, Paular Nine merely diverged a reality (Earth-16975) from this reality's timeline in which Earth was destroyed rather than completely erasing the timeline of Earth-52522. --Proto-Man
