History:
(Europa #2 (fb)) - A little
over two decades ago the man who became Mr. Illusion was in Segrate
International Hospital when there was a massive explosion. With the
hospital burning, the man tried to flee, but another patient, a woman
who had recently given birth, grabbed on to him and begged him to save
her baby. Terrified, he begged her to not hang on to him, and when he
spotted figures in medical gowns approaching through the smoke he
thought he could hand her over to them, but then the figures became
clearer, and to his shock they looked like demons under their surgical
robes. Lifting the woman up he fled in terror, getting out just before
an explosion. Putting the woman down, he looked back at the carnage.
Suddenly the man heard a voice speaking in his head, ordering him to bring the girl to whoever was speaking. Unable to resist both were drawn back inside by the telepathic summons. There they witnessed some soldiers, under the control of Edwig Caine, flooding a large containment vessel containing what looked like a small glowing baby with coolant, rapidly decreasing the temperature within and sending the infant into hibernation, while a demonic being (Nosferath), apparently only visible to the man, stood over them. With the soldiers' actions about to render it inactive, the demon implanted instructions into the man's subconscious to make him eventually gather five children who were then in the hospital and deliver them into its. It also imbued the man with a fraction of its power, giving him telekinesis, the power to manipulate matter, and the ability to generate hallucinations, to facilitate him achieving this.
Over the next couple of decades the man used this
ability to become the stage magician Mr. Illusion, but his his dreams
were regularly plagued by nightmares of the hospital incident, and he
became a heavy drinker.
(Europa#3 (fb) - BTS) - Reporter Carlo Paci, investigating the
hospital incident, learned that Mr. Illusion was one of the survivors,
but decided not to interview him about it.
(Europa#4 (fb) - BTS) - He stayed in contact with the
woman he had saved, Laura Di Giovanni, but a number of years later she
died, allegedly killed by the recurring nightmares of what she had
witnessed; however, her infant, the host body of Nosferath that Mr.
Illusion had witnessed Caine trapping, may have actually forced Mr.
Illusion to murder her (see comments).
(Europa#2) - Mr. Illusion woke screaming from yet
another nightmare. Having fallen asleep with the television in his
circus caravan still on by his bed, he saw the news were discussing
superheroes, and was struck again by the irony of calling himself Mr.
Illusion when he had genuine powers. As the news continued, Mr. Illusion
started drinking. Then he noticed Caine was being interviewed, and
mentioning five children from the hospital incident who had since grown
up to become the S.H.I.E.L.D. superhero team Gemini. Then to his horror
the face of the female interviewer on the screen transformed
demonically, and then Nosferath burst forth, filling his caravan and
telling him to bring it the five children. To his horror, he realized
this time it wasn't a dream.
(Europa #3) - Later Mr. Illusion began performing his stage show in the circus' main tent, but a belligerent man sitting in the audience with a group of friends, all of whom had clearly been drinking, began heckling and throwing beer cans at him. As the man climbed down into the ring to confront him directly, Mr. Illusion begged to be left alone to just complete his show, but the man persisted in his abuse. Losing control he telekinetically snatched the entire audience and lifted them skywards, but then a vision of Nosferath appeared again, coming down from the tent above and again demanding Mr. Illusion bring the children to him. Dropping the audience back to the ground he informed them that everything they'd just experienced was simply a dream, then left. As he walked back to his caravan he told himself he had to learn self-control or he'd go mad.
A few hours later the heckler and his friends showed up outside Mr. Illusion's caravan armed with baseball bats and planks with nails in them. He shouted for the magician to come out and be taught a lesson, but Mr. Illision emerged holding a pistol. For a moment the thugs backed down, but then one Mr. Illusion had failed to spot smashed Illusion's hand with his baseball bat, causing the performer to drop the gun. Immediately the entire group moved in and began beating him up. He was saved by the intervention of Gemini's leader, Front, who had been investigating the hospital incident and been brought to Mr. Illusion by Carlo Paci. After Front drove the attackers off, Mr. Illusion sensed that he was one of the children he was being compelled to locate. Front's face was hidden behind a gold mask as he had recently been badly disfigured; Mr. Illusion removed it, telling Front he was cured...
(Europa#4 (fb) - BTS) - though in truth he had merely hidden the scars with an illusion, which soon wore off. He told them of what he had witnessed that night at the hospital, though his story answered few of their questions, as Mr. Illusion lacked any idea what Nosferath was.
(Europa #4) -
Mr. Illusion took Front and Paci to a cemetery to
show them the grave of Laura Di Giovanni, explaining that she had died
three years earlier, allegedly killed by the recurring dreams of what
she had witnessed in the hospital (see comments). He watched as
they discussed their next move, but while they were doing so an aircraft performing a vertical landing only feet away. A
SHIELD agent, Lancelot, exited and informed Front that Gemini needed
him. Clearly not friends, Front drew his gun on Lancelot, but another
interruption, this time the arrival of the American superhero Iron Man,
prevented violence. As Mr. Illusion watched without getting involved,
Iron Man confirmed that Front's teammates were in danger. Though Iron
Man had to depart to deal with his own concerns, Front and Lancelot took
off in the agent's aircraft, unknowingly accompanied by a cloaked Mr.
Illusion. After a short flight they boarded an orbiting base, Vera
Croce. Now under Nosferath's control, Mr. Illusion greeted them with
illusions of Edwig Caine and Gemini member Balance, both seemingly fine
and happy to see them; unnoticed, behind them, Mr. Illusion followed,
apparently unable to cloak himself while producing other illusions. As
Balance moved towards Front he sensed something off, and despite
Lancelot's attempts to stop him, he shot her, blowing away half of
Balance's head. Despite this, she got back up and continued coming
towards them. Spotting Mr. Illusion, Lancelot grabbed the magician,
accused him of being behind this, and shoved him into the revenant's
path, which shattered on impact into a writhing mass of worms.
The facade they had been seeing dropped
away, revealing Gemini and Caine trapped by organic-looking growths
protruding from the walls, and in the center Nosferath's pawn Alma
Matrix and the floating form of its infant host, Child One. Desperate to
be free of Nosferath's nightmarish influence, Mr. Illusion proclaimed
that he had brought his lord the final child, and the entity happily
acknowledged that he had served his slave purpose well, including
slaying its "Earthling mother." Now ready to reclaim its energies, Child
One turned to Alma Matrix and, ignoring her protests and screams,
drained her lifeforce, initiating its transformation into its true form.
Seizing this momentary distraction, Front hastily shot his teammates
free, and they began attacking Nosferath, but the entity taunted them,
noting that their powers were part of it and so their attacks merely fed
it. Declaring the games to be over, Nosferath began draining the five
Gemini members and Mr. Illusion, all of whom collapsed, helpless as it
extracted their energies.
(Europa#4 - BTS) - Mr.
Illusion remained unconscious for the rest of the battle, which
ultimately ended in Nosferath's defeat. In the aftermath Mr. Illusion
was returned to Earth with Gemini for hospital treatment. Though seriously injured, the Gemini members were expected to
full recover, having retained their super-human metabolisms; whether the
same held true for Mr. Illusion remains unrevealed.
Comments: Created by Giorgio Lavagna, Francesco Mio, Luca Poli and Carmine Di Giandomenico. Poli and Di Giandomenico did the character designs for the Gemini characters, while Fabrizio Ugolini and Giampaolo Frizzi drew and inked the actual series.
His hair seemed to be brown
when tied up/slicked back, but closer to blond when loose. It might be
that he darkens his hair with some sort of temporary dye when
performing.
Given Child One's statement that Mr. Illusion had killed its "Earthling mother" at its request, I assume that this was the woman he had met at the hospital, Laura Di Giovanni, and hence that Mr. Illusion's statement about how Laura had died was false.
