Powers/Abilities: Able to fly, Mièré used this and her tiny size to spy on larger beings. However, she was vulnerable to black magic and especially to iron and steel.

History:
(Black Dragon#1 - BTS) - Circa 1191 A.D. when Richard the Lionheart was in the Holy Lands for the Third Crusade the Earl of Glenowyn, Edmund DeValere, and his sister / incestuous lover Lady Anne Glenowyn, turned to black magic in the hopes of using it to free their lands from Norman rule (see comments).

(Black Dragon#6 (fb) - BTS) - They hoped to usurp the power of the ancient Black Dragon, the supposed soul of the land itself, to this end.

(Black Dragon#3 (fb) - BTS) - Sensing their ill intent and knowing that if they succeeded it might destroy the land the Sidhe lord Eamonn sent two of his fairy, Mièré and Shènai, into Glenowyn Castle to spy on the plotters.

(Black Dragon#3) - However the pair were spotted by Anne. The fairy attempted to flee, but Anne blasted them with black magic. Shènai was captured and subsequently transformed into a monstrous servant of the villains, but Mièré managed to flee. However she had been infected with a plague lethal to the fairy folk. She barely made it back to Eamonn, crashing to the ground near him while he was conversing with his (partially) human Brian "Gryphon" Griffon. When he tried to pick her up Eamonn's hand became infected, and he had to burn it almost to the bone with a quick blast of sacred fire to prevent it spreading and killing him too. Brian noticed that Mière was still breathing, but Eamonn sadly informed him that while he would heal, they could not save the little fairy. Examining her, Brian confirmed that Mièré's back showed a spreading discoloration, and at Eamonn's behest he stabbed Mièré with a steel arrowhead, ending her pain. Eamonn slipped into the shadows as Brian's friend James Dunreith approached. He inquired what the kneeling Brian had impaled on his arrow, and Brian responded it was a poor wee thing who deserved better. James then asked Brian if the world had gone made, mentioning supernatural events he seemed to have recently encountered, including a Black Dragon, but which he was still trying to discount as fantasy. To prove otherwise, Brian tried to show him Mièré's remains more closely, asking him to explain the tiny body, but Jamie threw the arrow with Mière's body attached away into the woods, insisting it was just a trick.

   The two fairy call one another sister, but later on other fairies refer to their entire group as "sisterbrothers", so this might mean that the use these terms for any of their kind, rather than it confirming them to be siblings. Or maybe they literally are all closely related. Additionally Eamonn refers to Mièré as "my childe"but this might be a general thing as her king, rather than strict familial relationship.

   The West Country in England means the region around Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset and Bristol - basically, what looks like the leg sticking out the bottom west bit of England.

   The Norman Conquest of England started in 1066 with the invasion led by William the Conqueror. To get your head round the racial politics of the day: The Angles and the Saxons were both Germanic tribes who forcibly took over much of what would become England (Angle-Land, as it got named after them) in the 5th and 6th centuries, driving many of the the then-native Britons westward into what is now Cornwall and Wales. In fact, if King Arthur is depicted fighting invaders, they'd be among those invaders. Their small kingdoms would go on to merge into England, and the names of those kingdoms are still recalled in the names of English counties today - for example Essex (East Saxony), Wessex (West Saxony), and Sussex (South Saxony). Skip forward around four to five centuries to 1066 and you've got a region in France called Normandy. Like England, France's prior natives, the Gauls, had been taken over by invading Germanic tribes, including the Franks (hence Gaul being renamed France) and the Normans (a mixture of Scandanavian Vikings - Norman originating as Northmen - and Franks), who ruled the region in France that is still called Normandy to this day. The Duke of Normandy, William the Bastard, invaded England in 1066, and became the new king, William the Conqueror. Skip forward another hundred and thirtysomething years, and his descendant Richard the Lionheart is on the throne, but there's still a lot of tension between the Normans and the "native" (read - longer established invaders) Saxons. And if you go all the way to the West Country, the original Britons resented both groups.

   Could Black Dragon take place on Earth-616, the main Marvel universe? It's set in a time and place that is little explored by other stories, so on that front yes. The only potential problem is that Morgan Le Fay shows up in #5 and 6, appearing somewhat more benign than she usually does. However, her depiction is not so far off the norm that it would be a dealbreaker.

   This profile was completed on 08/09/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary's celebratory event to represent Black Dragon.
