History:
(Big Hero 6#2 (fb) - BTS) - Marys
Iosama was the daughter of top Japanese scientist Keigi Iosama.
When he got a job in Southport, Connecticut in the United States
she accompanied him there. Exceptionally gifted in her own right,
by the time she had just entered high school she designed a pair
of cyberglasses that allowed her to covertly tap into computer
systems without those around knowing she was doing anything other
than just reading.
(Big Hero 6#5 (fb) - BTS) -
(Big
Hero 6#2 (fb) - BTS) - The Japanese hero team Big Hero 6 were
assigned by their government to protect Dr Iosama and Marys.
(Big Hero 6#2)
- Having arrived the night before, Big Hero 6 tried to settle in at the
Iosama house while Marys munched on some toast for breakfast and read a
magazine while secretly going online via her glasses, largely ignoring
the new arrivals even when some of them began roughhousing in an attempt
to test out their newest member, Fred. Only when most of the team had
stepped outside did something get Marys' attention, when her glasses'
display went wonky and she realized the cause had to be interference
from a similar device nearby. Removing the glasses she spotted that the
youngest member of Big Hero 6, a boy around her own age, had just done
the same, and they simultaneously realized both of them had
cyberglasses. Suddenly interested, Marys began talking, declaring his
glasses cool and apologizing for unwittingly messing them up, but then
she stopped as he had said the exact same in almost perfect sync with
her. Pausing for a moment, she began to apologize for talking on top of
him, but again they ended up matching each other word for word.
Beginning to blush Marys stopped, and the pair began laughing. The boy
offered to let Marys speak first, and she asked to examine his glasses
while he checked her out. He expressed surprise that she had designed
her device, prompting Marys to respond jokingly that she'd tried to
order hers via online mail-order but they'd been sold out. Expressing
appreciation at her joke, he complimented the design, and now blushing
uncontrollably she told him his glasses were impressive too, and
introduced herself. Blushing back, the boy did likewise, identifying
himself as Hiro. By the time Marys' father came down and the rest of Big
Hero 6 returned the pair were deep in conversation, and were deeply
embarrassed to be teased by Fred about being in love. With time ticking
away, most of the team headed out with Marys to her school, Southport
High.
With heavy rain outside Marys and Hiro hung out together in an isolated
spot near the top of the bleachers in the gym, each wearing heavier-duty
VR goggles to maintain a private conversation, and which also allowed
Hiro to show Marys his school back in Tokyo, where Big Hero 6 had
recently battled some villains (Brute, Gunsmith and Whiplash), informing
her that had coincided with a bank robbery nearby, presumably not a
coincidence. After the rest of Hiro's teammates finished playing an
impromptu football game against some of the school jocks, Marys and Hiro
joined them and prepared to head back to the house.
(Big Hero 6#3) - Marys joined Hiro in the commentator box for a football match between their school's Port Green Strikers and another school's Bayport Wranglers. At the end of the first half and with romance between them growing, they held hands as they walked to the resident food truck and Hiro offered to buy Marys a soda. After the match Marys was with Hiro when his robot valet Baymax alerted the team that Dr. Iosama's workplace on Plum Island was under attack. With no fliers on the team, Marys offered to get them there via speedboat. As she drove the boat to the island Hiro told her she was to stay on board where it should be safe once they arrived, but Marys disagreed, pointing out that it was her father who was in danger. Hiro pointed out that she had no powers to defend herself, but Marys rebutted this, noting that his ability was his brains, not brawn, and asked how he coped in combat. Baymax noted that technically he'd built himself a guardian, but added that since there was a limit to his own multitasking abilities and the imminent encounter might prove dangerous he'd taken the liberty of preparing them both combat attire. Marys admitted they looked great, noting they were a matching set. The pair donned their suits as they reached the island, though Marys seemed to be slightly subconscious about wearing the virtually skintight outfit around Hiro. As the group were scanning the area and trying to figure out what had happened they were suddenly attacked by the seemingly possessed Big Hero 6 member Honey Lemon, now calling herself Whiplash. Hiro and Marys took cover while the others battled her, though Marys wanted to figure out a way they could help. As Hiro noted that in Japan there had been three villains, Baymax was suddenly downed by several gunshots, announcing the arrival of the missing two bad guys - only to everyone's surprise, especially Marys, Gunsmith now appeared to be the team's government liaison Furi Wamu and Brute was Marys's father, now bulked up to Hulk-like proportions.
(Big Hero 6#4)
- Marys and Hiro fled the widening field of battle as the two groups of
combatants faced off, though Marys was understandably worried that Big
Hero 6 were going to fight her father. Reaching what they hoped was a
safe distance they stopped to watch and saw Brute punch Fred flying even
as Marys called out to Fred not to hurt her father. Then to both Marys'
and Hiro's surprise they witnessed for the first time Fred displaying
his power, as the image of a giant ghostlike reptilian kaiju appeared
behind him and then strike down Brute. As the pair watched from their
trench in the beach sand Big Hero 6 gradually seemed to gain the upper
hand. Marys asked Hiro if her father would be hurt, insisting what was
happening wasn't his fault and that they couldn't let anything happen to
him, and Hiro reassured her that the last trio to play these roles
didn't remember anything once it was over, having clearly been someone
else's puppets and not responsible for their actions. Marys wondered who
was behind the possessions and attack, and Hiro suggested they could
find out, pointing out that the battle was presumably just a distraction
like the one in Tokyo had been. Hiro took her hand and suggested they go
and find out what was really happening, which proved fortuitous for just
after they moved Baymax, having been launched into the air by his
opponent, came crashing down near where they had been, sending the pair
flying. As the robot got back on its feet it instructed them to leave
the fight to the others, and head into the facility to find the real
villain.
Though Marys was still concerned for her father, the pair raced for the
lab facility, finding it seemingly devoid of personnel. Examining the
open elevator shaft, Hiro informed Marys that the workstations were all
underground, but Marys expressed concern that using an elevator would
activate alarms, but using the stairs would take too long. However Hiro
had the answer, asking Marys if she liked to fly then activating boot
jets and carrying her down the shaft. As he did so she asked him if all
the gadgets were things he had invented, and he admitted not all of them
were, with the boot jets apparently having been designed by Reed
Richards. Reaching a lower level the pair exited the elevator shaft to
numerous large containment tubes, some of which were smashed. Marys told
Hiro she was scared, and Hiro hugged her and admitted he was too, but
added that they could look out for one another. Moving on they found a
pile of bodies, some of whom Hiro recognized as facility staff; however
to their relief, a cursory check confirmed they were only unconscious.
Glancing back Hiro saw that Marys was holding herself, trying to stay
calm, and he asked her if she was alright. Marys responded that for a
smart guy he asked a lot of dumb questions, confirming that of course
she was not okay, finding the situation a lot harder to deal with than
she'd imagined, but adding that she was learning to cope. The pair moved
on, intent on finding the true villain, unaware that said villain had
just heard them coming. Reaching the room where some artifacts Dr.
Iosama had been studying were stored, the pair spotted a woman standing
in front of them. Shouting at Marys to keep back, Hiro tackled her to
the ground, but she seemed unphased even with him pinning her down.
Marys approached and demanded the woman release her father immediately.
The woman queried what Marys would do if she didn't comply, then stated
it didn't matter, because since Marys had asked so nicely, she would do
as requested. And with this the woman freed Doctor Iosama, and possessed
Marys instead, turning her into the new Brute. Her body expanded to the
same muscular proportions that her possessed, causing the armor she was
wearing to shatter from within.
As Brute she punched Hiro off of her mistress, but he recovered quickly and attempted to counter-attack, only to be thrown in the other direction. However he turned this second flight to his advantage, directing himself so he struck Marys' controller. He threatened to hurt her, but she called his bluff, and then Gunsmith arrived and kicked him off. Brute/Marys hoisted Hiro aloft by the throat, and the woman came over to gloat. Pronouncing Hiro to dangerous to let lift, she order Brute/Marys to hold him in place so Gunsmith could shoot him, but Gunsmith suddenly struck the woman, knocking her out. As Marys reverted to normal, Wamu revealed she had broken free of the woman's control some time earlier, but had maintained a pretense of being controlled in order to get close and make her drop her guard. With the villain, Badgal, captured and everyone else back to normal the group gathered in the facility, allowing Marys to reunite with her father.
(Big Hero 6#4 - BTS) - While Marys and her father stayed
where they were, Big Hero 6 followed a signal they had detected coming
from deeper in the lab and discovered aliens working there.
(Big
Hero 6#5 (fb) - BTS) - The aliens revealed they were
stranded, with their damaged spaceship hidden in the waters near the
island, and that they had snuck into the lower levels to access
equipment needed to carry out repairs.
When the American authorities
arrived to investigate the incident Big Hero 6 left Badgal with the
aliens, kept quiet about their alien discovery and used their cover
story of being exchange students at Marys' school who had boated over
to Plum Island hoping to celebrate their football team's victory with
her father, only to get caught up in a firefight, which Wamu, a
"retired" operative and "her pet robot" Baymax had resolved.
(Big Hero 6#5)
- Held together while the Americans decided what to do with them, Marys
comforted Hiro as he worried they might disassemble Baymax. Then Iosamas
and most of Big Hero 6 were soon released, instructed that they were to
returned to the Southport house to stay there under guard until
arrangements were made to return them all to Japan, though Wamu and
Baymax would stay in custody until the deportation. On the boat ride
over Marys began to ask about the aliens, but Hiro quickly stopped her
lest the wrong ears hear. Once back on land she and Hiro debated their
favorite superheroes, with Marys picking the Wasp because "she's so
smart and sassy." Back in the house while the rest of the team hunted
for and removed the expected bugs the Americans had planted, Hiro and
Marys whipped up a device that jammed all the surveillance devices in
and around the house so they could talk privately. Fred then called his
friends from the high school, spreading the word so that hundreds of
high schoolers turned up at the house demanding their friends be freed.
With too many to stop the police had no choice but to let them in, and
the football team swiftly gave Marys and the others their jackets so
they could slip out in the confusion. They headed for the beach across
from Plum Island, and while Fred and teammate Go-Go Tamogo provided a
distraction to draw away the circling police helicopters, Marys and the
others donned scuba suits and swam out to the spaceship. However, when
they entered they were attacked by Badgal; a short fight ensued before
Honey Lemon knocked her out. While Marys secured the prisoner, the
others freed the aliens, who Badgal had imprisoned. Marys and Hiro then
set about fixing the alien spaceship so they could go home.
A few hours later the team met up with their
school friends at Martin's Landing for a beach party. When the police
and FBI showed up hunting the "fugitives" they found them sitting on
towels in swim gear, and were told that they'd merely slipped out
because their school friends had wanted to give them a proper send-off
before they were deported back to Japan the next day. At that moment the
alien spaceship launched out of the sea nearby and shot off into space.
Seeing this, the FBI agents demanded answer, but Marys and Big Hero 6
played dumb.
