History:
(Mark Hazzard: Merc#1 (fb) - BTS) - Maria lived a sheltered life as the daughter of the president of an unidentified presumably island nation in the South Pacific.

    Based on what she had seen on television and from what her parents had told her, Maria believed all Americans to be lying aggressors.

(Mark Hazzard: Merc#1 (fb) - BTS) - Santos, leader of the rebels of this nation, hired Mark Hazzard, Mal Rossi and pilot Louis "Treetop" Barrington to bring the president to them, dead or alive.

(Mark Hazzard: Merc#1) <August 11, 1986> - From her bedroom, Maria heard her father cry out when , reaching the door just as Hazzard hurled the knife that killed her father when he went for his gun.

    Seeing the tip of the knife penetrate her side of the door and blood pouring around it, she opened the door, encountered Hazzard and ran away screaming.

    She hid in her room, crying as her father's soldiers killed each other while trying to claim the presidency.

(Mark Hazzard: Merc#1 (fb) - BTS) - After Santos claimed the presidency, his men tied Maria up in her bedroom.

(Mark Hazzard: Merc#1 - BTS) - Observing as Santos' men flipped a coin over who would get to have the late president's daughter first, Hazzard and Rossi forced the soliders to let them have her first, after which they took Maria and escaped out the window.

(Mark Hazzard: Merc#1 (fb) - BTS) - Slaying Santos' men who tried to stop them, Hazzard and Rossi then tied Maria to a tree while they buried nails and shotgun shells.

    When Hazzard cut her loose, she attempted to flee, believing that they were going to rape her.

    As Hazzard carried her through the jungle, Maria offered him large sums of money if he let her go, and she refused to believe that if he let her go, she would die. She berated him as a "big, macho American pig" for overpowering her like America overpowered weaker nations.

    Hazzard tried to explain how the people of her nation wanted her parents dead and now wanted her dead as well, and he tried to to sympathize with her sheltered life, but she accused him of lying like all Americans did.

    As Santos' forces closed in on them and were taken out by Rossi and Treetop, Maria begged to be let go and then dug in her heels and clawed at his face as her tried to drag her to Treetop's helicopter.

    With Rossi trying to provide covering fire against increasing resistance, Hazzard finally let Maria go so he could reach the helicopter without further endangering his allies.

    Maria rushed to Santos' men, calling out for help, but they assumed that she was trying to distract them, and they mowed her down with machine gunfire.

(Mark Hazzard: Merc#1 (fb) - BTS) - The president of an unidentified South Pacific nation, he lived in his home with his wife, Carmen, and his daughter, Maria.

    He trained Carmen to carry a small caliber baretta and to shoot whomever was nearby when he said, "my friend."

    This effort worked in the past, catching his enemies off guard and allowing Carmen to kill them.

    Santos, leader of the rebels of this nation, hired Mark Hazzard, Mal Rossi and pilot Louis "Treetop" Barrington to bring the president to them, dead or alive.

(Mark Hazzard: Merc#1 (fb) - BTS) - Earlier in the day before the main story, the president's men caught and executed three more rebels. One of them had been wearing a ring that was delivered to the president.

(Mark Hazzard: Merc#1) - Dropped off by Treetop, Hazzard and Rossi invaded the president's home.

    The president told Carmen that he could feel that the rebels were preparing an attack. Sharing the execution of rebels, he noted the ring to be "not much to look at, really...but then I suppose we can't look to the rebels for variety. I'll just put in the jewelry box with the rest." When Carmen expressed concern for Maria, he assured that nothing would happen.

     Hazzard subsequently confronted the president and his wife, telling them that the president's opposition was paying him to bring him to them. 

    The president feigned an attempt at discussion, saying, "Let's talk, my friend." Although this had worked in the past, when Carmen whipped out her small caliber baretta, Hazzard shot first, hitting Carmen twice in the torso (if not the thorax), presumably fatally.

    Hazzard advised him that if he did not want two useless deaths to put his hands in the air. Instead shouting, "Go to the devil!" as he shoved his wife's corpse at Hazzard. Noting his frustration at all of the time he had spent training her to protect him, the president grabbed a knife from his wall and hurled it at Hazzard. Catching the knife, Hazzard advised him not to kid himself and instructed him not to grab the luger from the wall. After the president grabbed the gun anyway, Hazzard threw the knife at him, penetrating not only his chest but also the door behind him, which was to his daughter's room.

     The president's soldiers killed each other while trying to claim the presidency. Five men briefly agreed that they were the new government, unaware that they were dancing on charges set by Rossi, which slew them all.
