History:
(The Kid from Texas I#1) - In 1836, Dan Hawk's father Jim was slain at the Alamo. His father's friend Cactus offered to help look after him. Dan learned how to shoot and ride from Cactus and in his teenage years became resolved that he'd become a Texas Ranger like his father. However, at Ranger headquarters, he was rejected for being too young. When Wassati's renegades attacked Fort Jessup with weapons supplied by a white arms dealer, Dan caught the gun runner and helped thwart the renegades, impressing the Rangers. They offered him membership but he declined, preferring to wander and help others. The Rangers made him an honorary member and Dan set off to find adventure with Cactus.

(The Kid from Texas I#1/2) - The Kid pursued the outlaw Ross McLane into the wilderness and they fought next to a river, both falling in. Cactus lassoed Dan to safety but McLane drowned.

(The Kid from Texas I#1/4) - Responding to a request from Mayor Jessup of Twin Forks, Texas, the Kid caught the stagecoach robber Blackie Craig's gang by riding beneath the wagon they'd used to collect stolen items.

(The Kid from Texas I#2) - After the Kid captured the outlaw Lash Grogan, his gang threatened to break him out of prison. With the town sheriff already injured from fighting Lash, Cactus went to get reinforcements from the Texas Rangers. The Kid and the injured sheriff decided to transfer Lash from the town jail to the Silver Palace, a saloon across the street, which would offer them a better view of the street when Lash's gang arrived. When the gang rode into town, the sheriff and the Kid were distracted and Lash stole the sheriff's gun. Despite facing an armed Lash and his gang alone, the Kid defeated all of them. When the Texas Rangers arrived minutes later, their captain remarked the Kid could have waited a few more minutes for them. The Kid replied he had to capture them single-handed: "There wasn't time to do anything else!"

(The Kid from Texas I#2/2) - Entering the town of Bedrock, the Kid was attacked without provocation by Ace Boyle and his gang. The Kid and Cactus defeated them then the Kid went to a meeting with rancher Jim Nolan. Nolan explained masked gangs had been raiding his ranch for six months, leaving him unable to pay his debts to Mr. Carter, the banker. The Kid and Cactus promised Nolan and Carter they would help deliver his cattle safely through Boot Canyon. While driving the cattle, they had to evade the masked gang, which proved to be led by Ace Boyle. The Kid used dynamite to blow up the sides of the canyon, preventing Boyle from pursuing them. As Carter was the only other person who knew about their planned route, the Kid exposed Carter as the one who hired Boyle to rob Nolan. Carter, Boyle and the gang were arrested.

(The Kid from Texas I#2/3) - The Kid and Cactus went to see his friend Chief Chippawa but the chief's brave Red Claw and medicine man Mawamba accused the Kid of being their enemy and plotting to drive them off their land. The Kid and Cactus were tied up but Red Claw secretly cut their bonds, expecting them to escape and thus serve as scapegoats. The Kid realized Red Claw and Mawamba were plotting against Chief Chippawa and, rather than escape, he entered the chief's tepee in time to prevent the two traitors from killing Chief Chippawa. The Kid and the chief parted as friends.

(The Kid from Texas I#2/5) - Entering Twin Forks, the Kid was accused of being the ringleader of a series of stage robberies so he wouldn't be around to stop a gang from blowing out a bridge as part of an ambush but when Cactus realized what was going on, he broke the Kid out of prison to stop the gang. The Kid prevented the gang from blowing up the bridge, captured them and cleared his name.

(Gunsmoke Western I#49/3) - The Kid and Cactus saved a bear from a wolf. Later, the same bear saved them from the ambush of a stage robber.

(Gunsmoke Western I#52/3) - The Kid from Texas tried to make peace between sheepherders and cattlemen but three of the cattlemen attack the sheepherders, raising tensions. When a wildfire broke out, both sides worked together to combat it and finally made peace.

(Wyatt Earp I#23/4) - The Kid and Cactus tried to help wagon riders from being robbed by Bull's raiders but when the Kid asked for the Texas Rangers to aid him, Colonel Harding said his men were busy elsewhere. Bull overheard and mounted another attack, only to discover Harding had lied and his Texas Rangers arrived to help the Kid defeat Bull's entire gang.

(Kid Colt Outlaw I#85/3) - The Kid from Texas and Cactus helped defend a small frontier town from being raided by Apaches. Although the town drove off the Apaches, the Kid opined that they should seek to win the Apaches' confidence without the use of guns. Such an opportunity arose when an Apache woman came to town begging for medical aid for her brother, the chief's son. The Kid and Cactus escorted the town doctor to the Apache village. After the doctor gave medicine to the chief's son, the chief remained skeptical and because his son didn't immediately revive, he accused the three men of taking away his son. The Kid fended off an attack from the chief which ended when the son finally awoke, his condition improved. Realizing the Kid had truly helped save the chief's son's life, the Apaches declared they would live in peace with the town from then on.

Cactus

Cactus was an old friend of Jim Hawk. After Jim's death at the Alamo, Cactus raised Dan like his own son and taught him how to ride and shoot. Cactus continued to journey alongside Dan Hawk to provide him guidance and assistance in his adventures.

Jim Hawk

Jim Hawk was the Kid from Texas' father. Jim was one of the defenders of the Alamo in 1836 and perished in battle against the forces of General Santa Anna.
