History: (Arizona Kid I#6/4 (fb) - BTS) - Unsatisfied with his own herds, rancher Carl Sandstrom began rustling cattle from his neighbor's herds. To protect his identity, he assumed the masked guise of the Hawk and had his subordinates likewise dress in black. Sandstrom led the rustled cattle through a waterfall at a mesa to be penned up in a secret valley so that it would appear to many that the cattle had simply vanished into thin air. As ranchers began to seek the Hawk, Sandstrom led efforts to find the culprit. Sandstrom accused Ham Coley because he was found on the mesa where the cattle had "vanished." Declaring Ham was the Hawk, Sandstrom prepared to lynch him.

(Arizona Kid I#6/4) - Just as Ham was about to be lynched, the Arizona Kid and Happy Hicks of the Texas Rangers arrived. The Kid shot the noose before it could kill Ham and demanded answers. Sandstrom introduced himself to the Arizona Kia and claimed that Ham was the Hawk. Ham disputed this so the Arizona Kid promised to investigate the rustling. As the Kid and Happy made a camp at the mesa, Sandstrom arrived dressed as the Hawk and attacked their camp alongside his gang. However, the Hawk attacked too early as the men were still awake. One of the Hawk's men was shot and the others fled. The dead man's horse rode after the Hawk's gang, and the Kid and Hicks followed it through the waterfall into the Hawk's hideout. The Hawk had fled by then but left his mask behind. Examining the mask, the Kid noticed a blond hair and immediately realized Sandstrom must be the Hawk. The Kid and Happy appeared to kill all of the Hawk's subordinates.

Back at the Sandstrom ranch, Sandstrom was again about to lynch Ham when the Arizona Kid and Happy Hicks arrived. The Kid accused Sandstrom of being the Hawk then punched him. The Kid arrested Sandstrom and told the other ranchers where to find the stolen cattle.

Comments: Created by an unidentified writer and Pete Morisi.

Unfortunately there are no full body shots of the Hawk but he seemed to be wearing all-black.

And boy, this has the lamest gunfight in all of Marveldom. In one panel, the Hawk prepares to attack the Arizona Kid's camp. The very next panel, the Hawk and his men are fleeing, having lost the fight. The Kid asserts that they shot one of the Hawk's men but boy, we sure didn't see it. Thanks, Dr. Wertham!

CLARIFICATIONS:
The Hawk should not be confused with:

Ham Coley

Ham Coley was the man Carl Sandstrom framed for being the Hawk. Sandstrom attempted to lynch Ham for his own crimes, but the Arizona Kid and Happy Hicks halted the lynching. Ham protested his innocence so the Arizona Kid and Happy Hicks investigated and ultimately found evidence pointing to Sandstrom himself. Ham was about to be lynched by Sandstrom again when the Arizona Kid halted them again and exposed Sandstrom as the Hawk, arresting him and liberating Ham.
