History:
(Rex Hart I#6/3 (fb) - BTS) - Rex Hart was raised by the mountain Apaches. He took as his steed Warrior, an Apache war horse.
(Rex Hart I#6) - Wolf Corbet tried to steal Warrior from Rex but Rex evaded him, then beat Wolf and his gang in hand-to-hand combat.
(Rex Hart I#6/2) - Rex found George "Muggsy" Baker and Eddie Fanto being menaced by two armed men. Not understanding the situation Rex drove off the two men then rode with Baker and Fanto for a while. As they neared Carson City, Baker and Fanto suddenly turned on Rex and knocked him out then robbed him. Awakening, Rex found they had dropped a newspaper clipping identifying them as two New York gunmen. The two criminals hijacked a train to make their escape but Rex pursued them and fought them aboard the train. Rex captured both men alive and brought them back to Carson City but he wasn't interested in the reward on them, simply to regain the money they'd stolen so he could buy a steak for dinner.
(Rex Hart I#6/4) - The masked outlaw Scarlet Mask was trying to control the Devil's Creek sheriff's election and after encountering Rex thought he could manipulate him into becoming the new sheriff, assuming Rex could be made into his ally. Rex visited Devil's Creek and saw the tension in town as Sam Scott was trying to win re-election as sheriff. Jack Holmes the town banker accused the Scarlet Mask of being behind the town's recent troubles as he'd been raiding the town. The next day, one of the Scarlet Mask's men killed Sam Scott and Rex Hart was named the new sheriff. The Scarlet Mask asked to meet with Rex to discuss their arrangement but Rex refused to support the Scarlet Mask's crimes and instead single-handedly fought the outlaw's entire gang. When the Scarlet Mask tried to escape on Warrior, the stallion threw him off. Rex unmasked the Scarlet Mask as Jack Holmes and told the people of Devil's Creek to hold another election for sheriff as he was continuing his travels.
(Rex Hart I#7) - After being sniped, the dying rancher John Callahan told his men to bring in Rex Hart to help the Bar-2 Ranch. Rex arrived just after a redheaded woman claiming to be Juanita Callahan had taken over the ranch but Rex figured out she was part of a ploy by John Callahan's lawyer Larry Jordan to control the Bar-2. After killing Jordan and the men working for him, Rex confronted the fake Juanita and the real Juanita, who had been posing as a waitress in town, revealed her true identity, claiming the ranch. Rex agreed to remain working at the Bar-2 Ranch.
(Rex Hart I#8) - Rex and other cowboys from the Bar-2 Ranch went into town to get supplies for the ranch. Rex's old friend Colin Gentry was in town and asked to speak with Rex. As Colin started to explain that someone wanted to kill him he was shot by an unseen assailant. Dying, Colin said the name of Colonel Dodson, another rancher, but perished before explaining. Found with Colin's dead body, Rex was accused of the crime and had to flee to clear his name. His fellow cowboy Candy went on the run with him. Investigating Colonel Dodson's ranch, Rex learned Colin had found oil on Dodson's property and was killed to silence him. Rex discovered Belle Dodson was behind Colin's death and cleared his own name. Colonel Dodson, grief-stricken, suffered heart failure. Rex eased the dying man's passing by concealing the truth of what Belle had done.
(Black Rider I#10/5) - Still working for the Bar-2 Ranch, Rex Hart killed the man-killing cougar Big Red. He let the old rancher Pop Benson take credit for killing the animal but was then annoyed as Pop continuously bragged about his heroism, even when Rex was the only person present to hear it. Rex regretted his immodesty.
Comments: Created by an unidentified writer and Russ Heath.
All three issues of Rex Hart had photo covers and declared Rex was "your famous western star." It seems like he was supposed to be a western movie star with a licensed comic book but there was no such film star; I have no idea who posed as Rex on the covers. The series was handed over to Whip Wilson, who was an actual western movie star (b-movie westerns, but still).
