History:
(Whip Wilson I#9/4) - Hawkeye Harris was the lawman of Cactus Gap, Texas. On May 22, 1865, a townman's horse was stolen. Riding upon his own horse, Smokey, Harris pursued the horse thief and caught him in a lasso. Harris brought the horse thief back to Cactus Gap and strung him up in a noose, sentencing the thief to death for his crime. Harris asked the thief if he had any last words but the man didn't and was hanged to death. A woman who observed the hanging believed Harris must be a cruel man to sentence another to death so heartlessly but a townsman insisted that Harris was "the kindest, most just hombre in these parts! He's gotta be tough... or we'd have no law in Cactus Gap!"
When the woman learned her fiance Jeb Sands had been targeted for death by Aces Dowd, who had set an ambush for Jeb in the town saloon with a dozen men, she went to Sheriff Harris and told him about the impending gunfight. Harris promised her he'd do what he could. When Jeb arrived for the gunfight, Harris knocked him out then switched clothing with him. Approaching the saloon, Harris was mistaken for Jeb by Aces' men. Aces and his men attacked Sheriff Harris and shot him but Harris killed Aces Dowd and apparently all of his men. As he lay dying from his injuries, Harris told Jeb's fiancee that Jeb could marry her in peace now. Jeb and his fiancee were moved by the sheriff's sacrifice on their behalf. At his funeral, Jeb dubbed him "the greatest sheriff... and the kindest man who ever lived!" Harris' tombstone still stands in Cactus Gap as a "mute tribute to the sheriff who never shirked his duty!"

Aces Dowd was a criminal in Cactus Gap, Texas. Due to an unrevealed "personal matter," Aces wanted to kill Jeb Sands. Aces set an ambush for Jeb in the town saloon, enlisthing a dozen of his gunmen to assist him in the attack, knowing Jeb would show up for their rendezvous rather than be branded a coward. However, Hawkeye Harris knocked out Jeb and donned his clothes so that from a distance Aces and his men would think he was Jeb. When Harris entered the saloon he engaged in a gunfight with Aces' mob. Aces' men shot Harris to death but Harris killed Aces and apparently all twelve of Aces' men.

Although Jeb was engaged to be married he refused to back down from the confrontation. However, Jeb's fiancee confronted sheriff Hawkeye Harris and pleaded for his help. Harris knocked out Jeb from behind then switched clothing with him. By the time Jeb regained consciousness, Harris had gone into the saloon in Jeb's stead and killed Aces and his men before dying. Jeb's fiancee was impressed at Harris' care for them and at his funeral Jeb declared Harris "the greatest sheriff... and the kindest man who ever lived!"

Smokey was the dark-colored horse who served as Hawkeye Harris' steed. Harris rode upon Smokey as he captured a horse thief.
