History:
(Romances of the West I#2) - At age 22, Jewel Halliday came to the western town of Talaho to find a job as a singer at Dud Talbot's saloon. Jewel was confident in her ability to control men and although Dud hadn't asked for her, she sought out work at his Silver Star saloon. On her arrival in Talaho, Jewel met Lola Perez, who was engaged to Dud and was the present singer at the Silver Star. Jewel made no secret of her intent to push her aside. Jewel took a room at the hotel then waited until the evening when the Silver Star was full and busy. When Jewel entered the Silver Star she found Lola and Dud kissing and interrupted them, surprising Dud with her beauty. Jewel asked for a jo singing at the Silver Star and Dud agreed, despite his arrangement with Lola. Jewel began singing by the piano that evening and she could see she had Dud spellbound by her beauty.
After a week singing at the Silver Star, Dud had begun to forget about Lola and fell in love with Jewel. Jewel didn't love him, however, only wanting access to his money. A few nights later, Lola came to Jewel and told her Dud didn't love her anymore, then begged Lola to break up with Dud because she could tell Jewel didn't truly love him. Jewel refused.
One night, the gambler Monte Cass asked to buy the Silver Star from Dud but Dud refused and got into a fight with Monte and one of his men. After Monte had been driven out, Jewel told Dud violence like that would make her leave the Silver Star. However, secretly, Jewel realized Monte was interested in her and if he did take over the Silver Star she'd do as well with Monte as she was with Dud.
The next evening, Lola overheard Monte planning to kill Dud and shared what she knew with Jewel, asking Jewel to warn Dud. Jewel refused to take her seriously, claiming Lola was being imaginative. When Lola insisted it was true, Jewel said it was no concern of hers if Dud and Monte wanted to kill each other. Lola denounced Jewel, saying that although she was beautiful, Jewel was "nothing but trash."
That night, Jewel kept away from Dud, knowing Monte might attack him at any time. When Monte sprang in the Silver Star and shot at Dud, Lola shielded Dud with her body, taking the bullet. Jewel was shocked to see Lola fall, realizing then how true Lola's love for Dud was. Dud killed Monte and carried Lola to a doctor to save her life. Jewel accompanied Dud to the doctor's and once they learned Lola would live, Jewel confessed to Dud that Lola was the right woman for him and that she wasn't worthy of him. Jewl walked out on Dud and boarded a train to leave Talaho, realizing for the first time in her life she'd made a "decent gesture."

Monte Cass was a notorious gambler who wanted to purchase the Silver Star saloon from Dud Talbot. Dud refused because he didn't want the Silver Star to become a gambling den. When Monte tried to kill Dud, Lola shielded him and was injured by Monte's bullet. Outraged at Lola's injury, Dud killed Monte.

Lola Perez was a singer at the Silver Star saloon and was in love with its owner, Dud Talbot. Lola and Dud were engaged at the time Jewel Halliday arrived in Talaho. Lola lost her job at the Silver Star when Jewel Halliday became the saloon's top singer and Jewel also displaced Lola by winning Dud's love, although Lola could tell Jewel didn't truly love him in return. When Lola overheard Monte Cass planning to kill Dud she warned Jewel, but Jewel refused to share this with dud. Lola shielded Dud with her own body, taking a bullet for him. Dud killed Monte in retaliation and brought Lola to a doctor, who saved her life. Realizing Lola was the right woman for Dud, Jewel left Talaho so she and Dud could be together.

Dud was engaged to his singer Lola Perez but when Jewel Halliday came to the Silver Star to become a singer, Dud was soon entranced by her beauty and soon gave away Lola's job to Jewel. Dud also fell in love with Jewel, although she only cared for his money. When gambler Monte Cass tried to force Dud to sell the Silver Star to him, Dud drove Monte and his henchman from the saloon. Monte planned to kill Dud but Lola shielded Dud with her body, taking a bullet for him. Outraged, Dud killed Monte then brought Lola to a doctor to save her life. Jewel confessed she'd been playing Dud for a sucker and left him so he could be with Lola.
