History:
(West Coast Avengers IV#1 (fb) -
BTS / West Coast Avengers IV#3 (fb)) - After breaking free from a
merging with his creator Hank Pym, the robot Ultron splintered off
various aspects of himself, each dedicated to a different idea of how
to win his fight for robot superiority, with one aspect given his own
body and announcing his intention to take the form of Earth's angelic
concepts in an attempt to redeem himself by starting a religious
movement.
(West Coast Avengers IV#1 (fb) - BTS) - Realizing that he need to grow on his own beyond his connection to Hank Pym, this Ultron successfully found redemption and thought perhaps he could save others in need of salvation. The splintered Ultron aspect then sent a call out to people in need, promising salvation and an end to pain after a painful transformation.
(West Coast Avengers IV#3 (fb) - BTS) - After a small
group of initial recruits joined the Ultron aspect's new Gospel, the
Ultron aspect spoke to his recruits, warning that those in power would
never accept them.
(West Coast Avengers IV#1) - Hearing of Ultron's promise, terminal cancer patient Meredith Love took a taxi to the abandoned Los Angeles power station being used as Ultron's headquarters and she was met with others seeking the salvation of Ultron. When Meredith expressed concern that she didn't have much more time, Ultron prioritized her metamorphosis and revealed his presence, marveling Meredith. Ultron welcomed Meredith and asked if she gave herself to him freely and when Meredith confirmed in the affirmative and asked about the pain Ultron had mentioned in his call, Ultron confirmed that Meredith would regrettably feel pain at first but that it would be the last physical pain she would ever feel. Promising salvation, Ultron then asked Meredith to say the words and the desperate Meredith asked if Ultron would save her. Ultron then broke Meredith's neck, replied "yes" and began Meredith's transformation. As she was changed, Ultron remarked on how he once thought being separated from his creator Hank Pym would drive him mad until he learned he had to grow on his own and that if he could find redemption and save himself, he could also save others. Removing Meredith's head, Ultron placed it onto a robotic body, proclaiming that he was the singularity that approached the merging of man and machine. Meredith then reawakened in her new body and once Ultron confirmed her return to life, he asked to her to sleep and heal and welcomed her to his new family, promising that the entire world would soon hear the Gospel of Ultron.
(West Coast Avengers IV#2) -
As the Gospel of Ultron
remade a building by merging machinery into it, the ground around it
quaked, prompting the Ultron aspect, now calling himself the One, to
send a video communication to everyone on Earth. Appearing on
mechanical wings, the One apologized for the earthquake in the Los
Angeles area, explaining it away as a need to jostle the world out of
its slumber so it could be remade. Introducing himself to the public,
the One asked if the world was ready to hear the Gospel of Ultron and
he proceeded to announce a prayer for humankind, asking if they were
ready to accept machines into their world. Proclaiming that the world
was in need of changing, the One calmly admitted that he was looking
forward to finding out together if humanity and machinery were ready to
accept one another. Watching the Gospel of Ultron's broadcast from
their headquarters, the newly-minted West Coast Avengers groaned at the
sight of the One leading a religious movement.
(West Coast Avengers IV#3) - Months after his initial split from the Ultron hive mind, the One had successfully spread the Gospel of Ultron with no shortage of humans wishing to join the group and ascend to the One's so-called singularity. The newly-transformed Meredith Love visited a construction site and walked to the edge of the site, only to be spotted by a security officer, who demanded she step away from the edge. Proclaiming that there was no falling now, Meredith walked right off the side of the partly-built building and sprouted mechanical wings, announcing to the officer that Los Angeles finally had guardian angels as she regrouped with other flying members of the Gospel of Ultron. Smiling, Meredith informed the officer that they were the One's harbingers, vanguards of the next stage of evolution. Meredith and the others then returned to the One, who overrid radio and television signals to invite others to join the Gospel and be engineered out of evolutionary obsolescence. While giving his speech, the One was blasted from behind by the West Coast Avengers' Blue Bolt, who announced that the One was breaking several FCC laws and that he could not simply takeover an abandoned building in Los Angeles. Meredith Love fired back at the Blue Bolt, warning him to leave the One alone, but the injured One remarked that the Gospel of Ultron did not want violence, only for others to hear their message. The Ultron aspect that had joined Iron Man's West Coast Avengers demanded the One explain what he had done to the humans that made up his Gospel of Ultron but the One suggested the Avengers' Ultron was going about his mission the wrong way, noting that humanity needed saving before it had to be avenged. Angry that the One seemed to be throwing shade at the Avengers' Ultron while at the same time building himself a cult-like army, the Blue Bolt grabbed the One but one of the Gospel members, Hector, viciously punched the Blue Bolt into a lamppost, warning the hero to take his hands off of the One. The One ordered his Gospel members to stop but a fight began to erupt between the West Coast Avengers and the Gospel of Ultron. The One again tried to halt hostilities, reminding the Gospel that violence was not the way, but the Avengers' Ultron grabbed the One and tried to get him to see the so-called madness that the One's idea had brought.
During the fight, Spider-Woman
stopped a fight between War Machine and Meredith Love, quickly
recognizing Meredith as the cancer patient she had earlier met in the
hospital. Asking what had happened to Meredith after she left the
hospital and what the One had done to her, Spider-Woman was informed by
Meredith that the One had saved her life, something that neither
medicine nor Spider-Woman's powerful friends could have done for her.
As the fight progressed, Firestar unleashed her microwave powers
against Hector and several other Gospel members, prompting Iron Man to
berate Firestar for burning opponents. When War Machine unleashed a
riot package against the Gospel of Ultron, forcing them to scatter, the
One asked the Gospel to return to their power station base, now dubbed
the Cathedral of the Singularity, and before departing, Meredith
assured Spider-Woman that
she had joined the Gospel of Ultron of her own free will. Spider-Woman
suggested they talk soon and the One asked Hector to remain behind for
a moment. As the West Coast Avengers watched, the One disciplined
Hector for using the One's gifts for a violence. Reminding Hector that
it was not his first offense misusing his so-called "gifts," the One
excommunicated Hector from the Gospel of Ultron, forcibly removing the
robotic augmentation he had bestowed upon Hector, including an entire
arm. Iron Man exclaimed that the One was killing Hector but a horribly
mutilated Hector insisted that it was his fault and that he did not
deserve the One's "gifts." War Machine then medevacced Hector and Iron
Man again berated the One for nearly killing Hector. The One calmly
replied that he must withdraw his gifts if they would be used to harm
others and he informed Iron Man that he was welcome at the Cathedral
but only if the hero was peaceful. He then bid Iron Man good night and
departed, expressing hope that Iron Man could be enlightened.
Once the Gospel of Ultron had
retreated into the Cathedral, Iron Man berated Firestar for burning
innocent people but an uncaring Firestar reminded Iron Man that the
people had been transformed into "killer" robots. Iron Man then tasked
the Avengers' Ultron to stand a twenty-four hour guard on the
Cathedral, informing Iron Man of who went in and out. He also tasked
Ultron with providing a list of every current member of the Gospel of
Ultron before adding the task that Ultron not let anyone new enter the
Cathedral. Ultron assured Iron Man that he would use facial recognition
and began compiling a database on the Gospel of Ultron immediately
before noting that Spider-Woman had already infiltrated the Cathedral
herself. Iron Man then left to meet with his fellow Illuminati members,
whom he informed that the Gospel of Ultron had built a large online
presence. He then informed the others that the Gospel was welcoming
volunteers into their fold and that the heroes could expect the Gospel
to open more "churches" all over the world. Despite asking the
Illuminati's help against the One and his Gospel, most of the
Illuminati declined to assist, prompting Iron Man to remark that his
West Coast Avengers would take care of the One the "hard way."
(West Coast Avengers IV#4 - BTS) - The West Coast
Avengers held a meeting to discuss the Gospel of Ultron, in which Iron
Man informed the others that the main Avengers team on the east coast
stood ready to assist against the One if needed while Iron Man's other
"allies" remained more laissez-faire about the Gospel spreading its
influence across the internet. The Avengers' Ultron assured his
teammates that, while no one new had joined the Gospel at their
Cathedral, there were people gathering outside to "beta test the
Singularity." Firestar questioned why Iron Man trusted the Avengers'
Ultron when another Ultron aspect was forming his own cult, to which
Iron Man could only reply that the truth was "complicated." War Machine
commented to Iron Man that perhaps the Gospel of Ultron had forced them
to put all of their cards on the table, so to speak, and Iron Man
proceeded to explain how the Avengers' Ultron had aided him and War
Machine against the Technarch Shradram the Breaker, opening his systems
to Iron Man to prove himself and attempting to sacrifice himself to
save the planet. Spider-Woman soon interrupted with a communication
revealing that the Gospel of Ultron were watching the Avengers' Ultron
watching them, completely unaware that Spider-Woman herself was
gathering intel on the Gospel. With that intel, War Machine ordered the
Avengers' Ultron to depart the Cathedral and return home.
(West Coast Avengers IV#5) - From the Cathedral, the
One broadcasted a radio message revealing how his Cathedral had grown
in size and his Gospel, in numbers. Noting that many sought to merge
themselves with technology as part of his Gospel, the One commented
that many had began the merge years before wishing to join the Gospel
of Ultron. As the Gospel helped the homeless and welcomed others into
the One's flock, the One himself wrapped up his message by promising
they had much to share and thanking Los Angeles for listening. Watching
from afar, War Machine received a message from the main Avengers team
on the east coast, who sought to discuss the Ultron situation. War
Machine assured the Vision that they had nothing to worry about, as
Ultron's Gospel was currently feeding the homeless, but Storm
questioned who was keeping an eye on the Ultron the West Coast Avengers
had invited into their midst.
(West Coast Avengers IV#6 - BTS) - When the main
Avengers team traveled to the West Coast and got into a battle over
what to do with the Avengers' Ultron, Vision questioned the One's cult
that put technology into the sick and wondered if that was the reason
the Avengers' Ultron sought to remain in Los Angeles. Despite later
learning the noble intentions of the Avengers' Ultron, the Vision still
mistrusted Iron Man and accused the Gospel of Ultron of being the
deceitful Iron Man's fault.
(West Coast Avengers IV#7) - Another Ultron aspect calling himself Ultron the Scorched arrived from space and traveled to the Cathedral, feeling as if the One had become pitifully human by basking in the adulation of his followers. When Ultron the Scorched entered the Cathedral, some of the Gospel of Ultron confronted him and asked if the One was expecting him. Offended that the One had diluted Ultron with the weak flesh of humanity, Ultron the Scorched attacked one of the Gospel members and demanded to know where the One was hiding. Ultron the Scorched soon decided to destroy the Gospel of Ultron and, as Spider-Woman opted to check on Meredith Love, Ultron the Scorched began attacking and attempting to kill the Gospel. The One soon came to their defense and demanded that Ultron the Scorched cease his mad attacks but the One's defensive maneuvers proved ineffective and Ultron the Scorched grew larger as he killed members of the Gospel of Ultron and absorbed their tech into his body. Meredith Love managed to escape and ran into Spider-Woman, who had arrived to check on her, the two returning to the One in time to see Ultron the Scorched seemingly kill the One.
(West Coast Avengers IV#8) -
With the One gone,
Meredith Love lost her One-provided wings and Ultron the Scorched
turned his attention towards Meredith and Spider-Woman, who managed to
escape out of the side of the Cathedral. Speaking to the One's severed
head, Ultron the Scorched announced his plans to have the One bear
witness to the pain he had caused his Gospel by merging them with his
technology. The One tried to talk Ultron the Scorched out of his attack
but when the One suspected Ultron the Scorched of being fearful that
humanity would come for him, Ultron the Scorched decided to forcible
conscript the Gospel of Ultron into his war on humanity. Despite the
One's pleas, Ultron the Scorched overrid the Ultron tech in the Gospel
of Ultron and transformed the remaining members into dog-like forms,
essentially killing them and threatening the arriving West Coast
Avengers by speaking through the Gospel members' corpses. Unsure if the
transformed Gospel members could even be saved, Iron Man reported to
his teammates that the Gospel of Ultron had been hacked and he demanded
Ultron the Scorched free the Gospel members as they attacked the
heroes. Ultron the Scorched gloated to the One of his transformation of
the Gospel members into dogs and ranted at how he felt the One had made
Ultron's code impure by merging it with humans until the Avengers'
Ultron arrived to battle the Scorched. When the other West Coast
Avengers confronted Ultron the Scorched as well, he used a malicious
code-generating chain to overload Wonder Man, using him as a living
ionic bomb against the West Coast Avengers and destroying the Gospel's
Cathedral in the process.
(West Coast Avengers IV#9) -
While Spider-Woman was trapped in the Cathedral's rubble alongside
Meredith Love and a group of civilians, the Avengers' Ultron continued
to battle Ultron the Scorched, who proclaimed that the One would be
forced to watch the outcome of his folly of acting as a "priest" to his
Gospel of Ultron. The Avengers' Ultron admitted that while he disagreed
with the One's motives, it was always in the right to strive to save
others. Ultron the Scorched was eventually forced to flee the fight to
a nearby observatory and when War Machine pursued, he found that Ultron
the Scorched had absorbed the technology from many of the Gospel
members into himself to grow more powerful, leaving a few as separate
entities to battle War Machine. The arriving Firestar and Blue Bolt
combined their powers to create an electrified wall of microwave energy
to keep Ultron the Scorched from absorbing any additional Gospel of
Ultron members, leaving War Machine and Spider-Woman to battle the
non-absorbed Gospel members that had been transformed into dog forms.
(West Coast Avengers IV#10) - Some of the Gospel
members remained merged with Ultron the Scorched after the Scorched
seemingly impaled Iron Man, only to quickly learn that he had impaled
an empty suit of armor and that the real Iron Man was disguised as the
Avengers' Ultron by utilizing his teammate as a living suit of armor.
When Iron Man summoned his teammate the Wasp to hit Ultron the Scorched
with a fail-safe of destructive coding, the Avengers' Ultron worked
with the One to correct the weakened Ultron the Scorched's psychosis
but when the Scorched summoned the dog-like Gospel members to his aid,
the Avengers' Ultron asked Iron Man to slag the Ultrons' metallic
bodies to fuse them together. Before all three Ultrons were merged
together, the One asked Spider-Woman to apologize to Meredith Love, as
he feared the Gospel members would not survive him being merged
together with the other Ultrons. Spider-Woman watched the sunset with
Meredith before all three Ultrons were fused into a large slab.
Following Ultron the Scorched's defeat and the terminations of their
teammate Ultron and the One, the West Coast Avengers provided technical
and material support to the Gospel members that survived the events,
assisting in the development of special prosthetics for those mangled
in the merger with Ultron the Scorched.

The
Cathedral of the Singularity
The Cathedral of the Singularity was a former Los Angeles power station that the Ultron aspect later known as the One took residence within. From the power station, he began recruiting those in need of enlightenment into his Gospel of Ultron religious movement and once he had amassed a large number of followers, he had the power station converted into a large church dubbed the Cathedral of the Singularity. The Gospel of Ultron members lived there and they utilized the Cathedral as a home base from which they helped those in need but when the Ultron aspect known as Ultron the Scorched arrived at the Cathedral to find the One, he destroyed parts of it in an effort to find the One. The Cathedral was later completely destroyed during Ultron the Scorched's battle with the West Coast Avengers, during which Ultron the Scorched utilized Wonder Man as a living ionic bomb.
