Powers/Abilities: Based on his size and being able to throw a giant axe, the Giant God possessed immense superhuman strength, though to what degree was unrevealed. He was also presumably superhumanly durable, surviving both a high fall and being uninjured by the spears and other weapons of the elves. He wielded a giant axe which he could throw with a fair degree of accuracy.

History:
(Menace from the Bottom of the World (fb) - BTS) - The "Giant God" was a gigantic individual that dwelled deep in one of the caverns of Subterranea, near the realm of the Subterraneans ("Molemen").

(Menace from the Bottom of the World) - When surface superhero Spider-Man ventured into Subterranea looking for a bank stolen by the Subterraneans, along with the people who had been inside at the time, the web-slinger unwittingly ventured into the God's territory. The God threw a giant axe which cut the webline the hero was using to traverse the cavern, causing him to fall to the ground, then loomed over him menacingly. Calling the creature a "Giant God" Spider-Man fled, swinging away on new weblines as fast as he could go, with the God in pursuit, its heavy strides causing pieces of the cave ceiling to break off and fall around the escaping hero. Recalling that on his way into the cavern he had passed through an elevated carved entrance, Spider-Man led the God back that way, and then hid above the carved entrance to ambush his foe. When the God got to the edge of the entrance, Spider-Man webbed his toes and yanked, throwing the giant off balance and sending him tumbling down into the depths of the cave beyond and crash heavily to the ground far below. 

(Spiderman Battles the Molemen) - Some time later when the Subterraneans again attacked the surface world Spider-Man returned. Having this time encountered some of the belligerent "elves" that dwelled in the underground, the hero was fleeing them when the God once more sliced his webline with a thrown axe. With the giant again looming menacingly, Spider-Man concluded that the elves would be upon him in seconds, and that he also had little chance prevailing against the God, so he instead decided to let his two opponents fight each other. Hauling himself up to the cave ceiling via a webline, Spider-Man planted himself on atop the giant's head just as the elves arrived, and as he had hoped the new arrivals began throwing spears at the God. With both sides focused on each other and not him, Spider-Man hastily swung away.

   In part because we see so little of him, we don't learn the origins of the God. Given that it was located in a cavern that had a carved face of a Subterranean framing the entrance and which led to the Subterranean city, and based on him somewhat resembling a giant stone version of the Subterraneans, complete with matching didactyl toes like them, it seems most likely he was carved by them and somehow animated to act as a guard, but it is also still possible that he's just a living being of gigantic proportions whose gray skin just makes him look like he's made of stone, who perhaps struck a deal with the Subterraneans to guard the passage to their city. On Earth-616 he might be a Deviant mutate, but there was no evidence of Deviants in the 1960s cartoon, not least because Jack Kirby hadn't invented them yet.

   The Giant God had three fingers (or two and a thumb) in his first appearance, but four (three and a thumb) in his second; the Subterraneans who he might have been the template he was carved to resemble, were even more inconsistent on that front, switching between two, three and four fingers, all in the same scene.

   I've seen this character called the Golem some places online. However, he's not named in either episode. The closest we get is Spidey describing him as a "giant god," hence my using that (and the shorter God) in this profile for ease of reference. Maybe there's a reference book to the Bakshi Spider-Man series that identifies him as a Golem, and if that proves to be the case then the profile will be renamed. Or maybe someone just misheard the dialogue and thought Spidey said "golem."

   How far did the God fall? There's around a two to three second gap between him going off the edge of the entrance and the sound effects of him hitting the ground below. The math says that would either be around 64 feet and going at around 44 mph, or 145 feet and 66 mph. Either way, that's got to hurt.

   Spider-Man calls the little green guys he sets against the God "elves," but there's no evidence that is what they are. Short, green and bearded, they could just as easily be dwarfs or trolls.

   Despite being aired with only a single other episode between them, there's zero acknowledgement in Spiderman Battles the Molemen that the hero has encountered either the God or the Molemen before. Indeed, the second episode liberally reuses whole chunks of animation from the first.

   This profile was completed on 08/27/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25^th anniversary's celebratory event to represent the 1967 Spider-Man cartoon.
