History:
(Ectokid#2
(fb) - BTS) - Father Bernet was a daimon (demon) posing as a human
priest working at a New Orleans hospital.
(Ectokid#2)
- Father Bernet approached Dexter Mungo, who had just finished visiting
his mother, Josephine Mungo, a long term psychiatric resident at the
facility, and falsely informed the boy that there was a problem with his
mother that they needed to discuss. He used this pretext to lure Dexter
into the elevator, supposedly to go to Bernet's office, but really to
get his victim down to the isolated basement. Dexter had recently
learned that the occult was real and gained the ability to see
supernatural things with his right eye, and so had begun using an
eyepatch to cover that eye most of the time. Suspicious upon exiting
into the darkened floor, he switched the patch to use his right eye and
turned to see Bernet's true, monstrous form looming over him.
Announcing that Dexter was his, the daimon snatched up
his target and licked the boy's cheek to savor the taste. Dexter
responded by biting Bernet's pointy nose, and the monster dropped him in
pain. This gained Dexter only a momentary reprieve, as Bernet grabbed
him again, but he did so by the stairs leading down towards the furnace
room, and so overbalanced, dropping both of them down the stairs. Both
recovered quickly, but when Bernet again charged Dexter, the boy pulled
a knife from his boot and stabbed Bernet in the shoulder, then retreated
over towards the furnace hatch. He waited for Bernet to again charge at
him, then swiftly opened the hatch and used a shovel to throw burning
coals into Bernet's face.
Bernet's human-looking corpse, its face
burned down almost to the skull, was found a few hours later by Ice and
Tom Augustine, two brothers who were tracking Dexter.
Comments: Created by James Robinson, Steve Skroce and Bob Dvorak.
Given how briefly he appeared, it's unclear
whether Father Bernet generally targeted people visiting relatives at
the hospital, or was drawn to Dexter Mungo specifically. It's
possible that both held true to some degree - maybe he generally hunted
there, but Dexter's supernatural abilities made him look especially
tasty too. He knew Dexter's surname, which might
mean the boy was a specific target, but might simply be because he knew
the surname of Dexter's mother, who Dexter was visiting, especially as
when he said "Mr. Mungo?" it was a question, not a statement on his
part. You'd think if Bernet was just picking victims from the same
location eventually the cops might notice, but maybe he shifted hunting
grounds every so often. Was Bernet a complete fabrication or did the
daimon assume the identities of some of its victims?
