died within a Tsunami Corporation building
First Appearance: Mutatis#1 (1992)
Powers/Abilities: Cronyn was experienced with
maintenance.
At least in his senior years, he readily gave out advice but did minimal actual work.
He seemed to somewhat accident prone,
reacting to things without considering the consequences.
History:
(Mutatis#1 (fb) - BTS) - Cronyn was a
maintenance worker -- covering the redeye shift -- on the Hydro Twelve
hydropolis (one of many such seascrapers; created -- possibly by the
Tsunami Corporation -- after the polar icecaps melted).
After his son, Byron, a police officer died -- possibly as a result of Byron's partner, Lyle Clane, attempting to stand up against the Tsunami Corporation -- Cronyn got Clane a job working maintenance after Clane was released from prison following a 5-year sentence and then being blacklisted by Tsunami.
(Mutatis#1) - While
sitting
atop an elevated platform, Cronyn advised Clane to use a three inch
ratchet on whatever he was working on, noting that "those
filters are a mother to tighten. We wouldn't want it to slip."
However, coincidentally, Cronyn's flask
dropped out of his hand, and when he reached for it, he fell off the
platform. Clane caught Cronyn by his clothing and pulled him back up,
although Cronyn lamented as his flask fell inito the main air filter and
was shredded.
Clane somewhat mockingly told Cronyn that at least he now knew what to get him for Christmas, and Cronyn considered that if that had been him instead of just his flask that "the $#!+ would have really hit the fan. Thanks, Clane."
Both men were then surprised by the
sound of the cable moving, bringing an elevator up toward them when the
shaft was meant to be shut down. When it stopped, despite Clane's
telling him to hang on and give him a hand, Cronyn opened the hatch and
then screamed as a number of tentacles extended out the open hatch and
pulled him inside.
As Cronyn urged Clane to get it off of
him, he grabbed Cronyn's shirt and tugged but was swiftly pulled into
the elevator and overwhelmed by the creature.
Cronyn and Clane were saved when a
group of men opened the elevator door and zapped the creature, killing
it. However, the men then covered Cronyn and Clane with a quarantine
membrane.
Cronyn asked why this was being done to them and what they had done to earn this treatment, but the men instead took Cronyn away to isolation.
(Mutatis#1 (fb) - BTS) -
Cronyn was "probed and jabbed."
(Mutatis#1 - BTS) - Eamon
Voss,
Tsunami's head research & development, explained to Clane that they
had been infected with the Mutatis genetic virus (via Dr. Berne Huxley,
the leader of a mutagenic engineering project that had resulted in the
creation of the virus)and would be dead within a day; however, as Clane
received multiple implants, Voss told him that if he would slay the
three others exposed by Huxley that they would give him and Cronyn the
cure. Clane reluctantly agreed but insisted that he see Cronyn first.
(Mutatis#1) - After Cronyn told
Clane that he was fine despite the probing and jabbing, Clane departed
to fulfil his mission, and Cronyn told him to take care of himself.
Unaware that Voss had approached him
behind with a gun to his head, Cronyn told Voss that he could murder for
a cup of coffee...and seconds later, he was slain by a bullet through
the back of his head.
(Mutatis#1 - BTS) - En route to his first target, Clane considered how crossing Tsunami in the past had cost him his closest friend, Cronyn's son, and that he could not fail Cronyn again.
(Mutatis#3 - BTS) - After
Clane had slain the three targets and then learned that President Ferris
was infected, Voss revealed that there was no cure

I'm not sure, but I think the "the $#!+ would have really hit the fan." was Cronyn saying he had crapped himself (or would have crapped himself during the fall toward the massive fan.
I think Cronyn's flask contained
coffee...it was steaming, and he asked for coffee later...
