History:

(El Cazador I#1) - Donessa Cinzia Elena Maria Esperanza Diego-Luis Hidalgo was aboard the Spanish ship Las Miseracordia when it was assaulted by pirates led by Blackjack Tom on December 9, 1687. Donessa hid herself aboard the ship while Blackjack Tom placed it under the command of his subordinate Billio Dane. As Dane sailed the ship, Donessa came out of hiding and stabbed Dane to death. Declaring herself the new captain of the ship, the crew named her "Captain Sin" because they couldn't remember her full name. She promised the crew she'd lead them to treasure and renamed the vessel "El Cazador." She made it clear to the crew that they were going to hunt down and kill Blackjack Tom but first had to increase the number of hands on her ship. Secretly, she intended to rescue her mother and little brother, who were prisoners of Blackjack Tom.

(El Cazador I#2) - Jean Gillon led a mutiny against Captain Sin but she fought the mutineers and challenged Gillon to a duel, besting him. Captain Sin marooned the mutineers on an uninhabited island.

(El Cazador I#3) - The El Cazador was spotted by the pirate crew commanded by Redhand Harry Newcomb, who decided to raid them.

(El Cazador I#4) - Captain Sin commanded El Cazador as they fled from Redhand Harry Newcomb's vessel. She had her gunnery mate van Wessel move a cannon to the aft of the El Cazador so they could fire on their pursuers. Damaging Redhand Harry's vessel, El Cazador escaped.

(El Cazador I#5) - Captain Sin brought El Cazador to the port of Parlatuvier on Tobago to learn of Blackjack Tom's whereabouts and to enlist more crew. A man in a bar told Captain Sin to find Schuyler True, who was a prisoner on Canalon del Infierno, telling her True would know where Blackjack Tom was. Unable to find willing volunteers for her crew because she was a woman, Captain Sin captured a slaving ship in the port and placed its crew under her command, renaming their ship El Sabueso. She released the ship's slaves and made them part of El Cazador's crew.

(El Cazador I#6) - Captain Sin once again encountered Redhand Harry, who had repaired his ship and rescued Jean Gillon, who gave him information about how to assault El Cazador. Captain Sin led El Cazador through a narrow strait at Ginger Island. When Redhand Harry attempted to follow he grounded on shoals and Captain Sin led a boarding party. Captain Sin dueled against Redhand Harry and learned he was an English privateer who hunted pirates. She kissed him, then kneed him in the groin. Captain Sin took Redhand Harry and his first mate Bropheus into El Cazador and forced them into an alliance with her, knowing Harry had a similar hatred of pirates and had knowledge that would be useful in entering Canalon del Infierno.

Comments: Created by Chuck Dixon and Steve Epting for Crossgen; adapted to Marvel Comics by Mike Carey, Leonard Kirk, Pat Olliffe and Edgar Tadeo.

    Marvel's Sigil (Earth-11529) was a complete reboot of the original Crossgen concept, but the story's use of Captain Sin wasn't out of line with Crossgen's El Cazador series continuity. However, the cast of El Cazador were about the last characters who should've appeared in something like Sigil; y'see, Crossgen originally published comics from a wide range of disparate genres set in completely different eras. To link them together, publisher Mark Alessi insisted on the Sigil, a mystical glyph that at least character in each series possessed. Alessi was pretty much the only person who liked that idea. By the time El Cazador was published - in what proved to be the dying days of Crossgen's publishing - the Sigils had fallen out of favor as the fans never liked them much either. Thus, El Cazador didn't use the Sigil at all. El Cazador was a grounded historical adventure series; tying it into the Sigils through Marvel's reboot is a real slap in the face to every fan of El Cazador - of which, I was one (also note that Sigil was set in the Pacific - all of El Cazador was set in the Atlantic).

(Sigil II#1) - Captain Sin observed as the 21st century woman Samantha Rey was magically teleported aboard her ship through the mystical sigil she possessed. El Cazador's crewman Tobias Woodvine tried to persuade Captain Sin that Samantha could be a powerful ally but she was dubious, seeing only a teenage girl. Just then, the mystical Captain October descended upon El Cazador from the sky.

(Sigil II#2) - Captain Sin fought Captain October's forces but was defeated and taken prisoner. Captain Sin tried to encourage Samantha to use her magical powers to help her crew. Capturing a pistol from a guard, Captain Sin used it to kill the familiar Captain October had used to contain Samantha's power. Samantha teleported away.

(Sigil II#3) - When Samantha began a magical assault on El Cazador, Captain Sin freed herself and her crew from the hold. Retaking El Cazador, Captain Sin sailed it away from Captain October's ships. Samantha guided them to Reina de Los Angeles to locate Blackjack Tom's hoard, which Captain October had been attempting to locate. They found the hoard just as Captain October caught up to them.

(Sigil II#4) - Captain Sin and her crew fought Captain October and his men. Samantha slew Captain October. Captain Sin invited Samantha to join her crew but Samantha chose to return to her own era.
