History:
(Astonishing Tales#16 (fb)) - Dr. Calvin and her son Percy attended the
funeral of her husband, Henry, and Percy encouraged her that they would
make it.
(Astonishing Tales#16 (fb)) - Dr. Calvin told Percy to
study hard; even though her lab experiments kept her away from him so
much, she still wished to be proud of him...for him to be free, brave,
and strong.
(Astonishing Tales#16 (fb) - BTS) - Percy sought power as
a street criminal, eventually working under the criminal Pusher under
the nickname Vinnie.
(Astonishing Tales#12 (fb) - BTS) - Dr. Wilma Calvin was
coordinator at Project: Gladiator, working alongside Dr. Paul Allen, Dr.
Barbara Morse, Dr. Ted Sallis, Dr. Wendell, and her assistant Jim, in a
project to create a super-soldier, an indestructible warrior.
(Astonishing Tales I#16 (fb) - BTS / Astonishing Tales#17 (fb) - BTS) - From prison, Joshua Link
manipulated his twin brother, Damian, into becoming Gemini, using him to
establish an alliance with A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics), as well as
with the criminal Plunderer.
Gemini then hired the criminal known only as the Pusher to kidnap Dr.
Wilma Calvin, in hopes of obtaining the Super-Soldier formula and using it
to take over A.I.M.
(Astonishing Tales I#15 (fb) -
BTS) - Bossman Morgan apparently employed the Pusher to have his men
quietly eliminate Morgan's competition on his turf. However, the Pusher
secretly plotted to set up Morgan, so that he (the Pusher) could take
complete control of all of the rackets.
(Astonishing Tales I#15) -
Ka-Zar interrupted "Vinnie" and his associates while they were beating "Scratch"
Riker,
who had been selling drugs on the Pusher's (or Morgan's) territory without
giving the Pusher and his agents a cut of his profits. Vinnie escaped
while Ka-Zar subdued the others.
Vinnie subsequently caught up to Scratch and
apparently gave him a drug overdose or just a bad batch of drugs that
killed him.
(Astonishing Tales I#15 (fb) -
BTS) - Vinnie and two of his associates attempted to bring his mother
(although no one else involved knew he was related to her). They
apparently used a drug (likely chloroform or something inhaled) to keep
her unconscious.
(Astonishing Tales I#15) - When
Ka-Zar accompanied Bobbi Morse to check on Dr. Calvin (they had been
involved with Project: Gladiator down in Florida), they encountered Vinnie
and his associates moving her. Ka-Zar initially demanded an explanation,
and Vinnie claimed that they were doctors. Smelling a strong odor of her
breath, Ka-Zar stated that Dr. Calvin should stay there until the matter
was resolved. Vinnie insisted that he knew the woman well and asked if
Ka-Zar questioned his authority, at which point Ka-Zar recognized him as
being one of the drug-dealers he had previously encountered, specifically
the one who had escaped.
As Ka-Zar and his sabertooth tiger, Zabu, overpowered
the men, Bobbi Morse noted that Dr. Calvin's breathing had slowed and she
seemed to be having a relapse, and Ka-Zar and Bobbi put her in Vinnie's
fake medical vehicle -- and put Vinnie and his associates in the back as
well, with Zabu watching over them -- and rushed her to a hospital where
she was stabilized.
Ka-Zar subsequently directed a police officer to Vinnie
and the men in the back of the vehicle. Upon seeing the arrival of the
corpse of the overdosed Scratch Riker, Ka-Zar
grabbed Vinnie and carried him up on top of a building, held him over the
edge and demanded information on his master. Although
Vinnie lied to Ka-Zar and sent him in another direction, Ka-Zar apparently
suspected this and followed Vinnie as he ran to warn the Pusher that
Ka-Zar was after him.
Vinnie warned the Pusher, who
punished him for his failure by punching him down and warning of pain and
death. Ka-Zar then dove through the window, hinting that he knew that the
Pusher had killed Scratch, and he swiftly beat down the Pusher's men.
Ka-Zar's skills and strength allowed him to beat back
the Pusher and dodge his attacks. The force of their fight soon caused the
building to collapse around them, and Ka-Zar grabbed Vinnie and fled, not
knowing whether the Pusher had escaped or been crushed.
(Astonishing Tales I#16 (fb) -
BTS) - The Pusher escaped the collapsing building without significant
injury.
(Astonishing Tales I#16 (fb) -
BTS) - With no witnesses to the death of Scratch Riker, Vinnie was
released from custody.
(Astonishing Tales I#16) -
Departing from the police station, Vinnie considered that he had some
fences to mend with the Pusher. An undercover
police officer followed Vinnie, hoping he would lead him to the Pusher,
but Vinnie spotted "that freakin' honky
long-hair" tailing me" and tried to shake him in an alley.
However, the Pusher, apparently having been keeping an eye on Vinnie,
grabbed and drop-kicked the police officer, knocking him out.
The Pusher then confronted Vinnie, telling him that a
solo A.I.M. agent wanted his mother. Believing that the money from this
would make him rich, the Pusher told Vinnie that he needed to eliminate
the failing link in his supply chain: Him. However, as the Pusher
threatened him, Vinnie recalled his own history and his mother's
encouragement to be brave and strong. Impressed with Vinnie's courage for
not flinching, the Pusher instead resolved to use Vinnie as bait in a trap
for Ka-Zar. Vinnie was pleased that he was still alive, but he appreciated
that the Pusher's tone meant that he might not be that way for long.
(Astonishing Tales I#16 (fb) -
BTS) - Presumably from A.I.M., the Pusher acquired a strength-amplifying
harness, and he arranged to have Vinnie fight another of his agents in a
region in which he suspected Ka-Zar would find them,
(Astonishing Tales I#16 - BTS) -
Ka-Zar subsequently was drawn to the sounds of struggle and found Vinnie
battling another man.
(Astonishing Tales I#16) - After
Ka-Zar broke up the fight and questioned Vinnie, the Pusher, wearing his
strength amplifier, ambushed him, punching him from behind and knocking
him out. As the Pusher prepared to finish off Ka-Zar, Vinnie tried to stop
him, and the Pusher swatted him away, noting how he was going to make
Ka-Zar die from a drug overdose.
Considering that Ka-Zar had saved him before and
remembering his mother's teachings, Vinnie resolved to save Ka-Zar from
the Pusher. Although the Pusher repeatedly battered Vinnie, he refused to
give up, and though he was eventually thrown through a window, his efforts
gave Ka-Zar time to recover.
Punched back by Ka-Zar, the Pusher delivered a powerful
kick to Ka-Zar's head, but when he dove at Ka-Zar, the jungle lord punched
him in the face, shattering teeth. Despite the Pusher's martial arts
skills, Ka-Zar dodged his blows and repeatedly pummeled him into
submission. Ka-Zar stopped himself short of the killing stroke,
considering that murder would lower him to the depths of those he fought.
As Ka-Zar rushed Vinnie to the hospital, the police let
him go upon discovering the fallen form of the Pusher. They considered
that they needed a witness who would talk.
(Astonishing Tales I#16 - BTS) -
The police felt that once Vinnie recovered, he would help prosecute the
Pusher.
(Mockingbird: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary#1 (fb) - BTS)
- After Wilma Calvin refused to supply Nick Fury with more Super-Soldier
Serum, Fury had Dr. Calvin's S.H.I.E.L.D. funding cut, and as a result
she lost her position at Georgia Tech.
(Mockingbird: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary#1 (fb) - BTS)
- Percy become a Reed Richards Award winning
researcher and the Dean of the Chemistry Department at Georgia Tech.
Percy disagreed with her past decisions
because, in his opinion her work should have been shared with the
scientific community.
When Percy learned Bobbi Morse (now
Mockingbird), to whom his mother had been a mentor, was injected with a
cocktail of the Super-Soldier Serum and Infinity Formula, he resolved to
kill his own mother to lure Barbara to him so he could examine her.
Even though Wilma saw her son coming at
her, she didn't raise her arms to protect herself. She died of a blunt
force trauma to the back of her skull.
(Mockingbird: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary#1 (fb) - BTS)
- Knowing that Bobbi would want to perform her own autopsy, Percy laced
the gloves she would use with a neurotoxin.
(Mockingbird: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary#1) - Bobbi met
with Percy at the morgue where his mother's corpse was kept, and she
told him that she needed to do an autopsy herself, as she was may
smarter than the medical examiner. Percy agreed and handed Barbara a
bone saw at her request.
During the autopsy Percy talked about his mother and her
past mistakes before changing topic to Bobbi's survival due to a mix of
the Super-Soldier Serum and Infinity Formula. He expressed frustration
that Fury would not spare a milligram for research but when one of his
own was hurt, "he uncorks the good
stuff like it's New Year's."
After the autopsy Bobbi told Percy that
she had psychic abilities and that she knew who had killed his mother
and pulled her gun on him. She subsequently told him to think of a card,
which she correctly identified as the Queen of Heart. When she asked why
he did it, he told her "to get you
here," after which the neurotoxin began to incapacitate her,
rendered her unconscious.
After Bobbi revived, Percy discussed
her application to be his mother's research assistant as referencing an
ability to "feel people" in her mind. However, she quickly freed herself
and overpowered Percy as he leveled his gun at her. She She then called
the police to arrest him for the murder of Wilma Calvin.
Barbara attended Wilma's funeral. Wilma
was lauded at the funeral as a longtime civil rights activist, champion
of science, feminist and a dedicated single parent and patriot.

Mockingbird: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary#1 was a fun,
well-researched read, although both Wilma and Percy's fates were tragic.
