Powers/Abilities: Mark currently possesses no superhuman powers. As a gamma mutate, he gained immense superhuman strength, durability and stamina, enabling him to overpower She-Hulk briefly, hurl her considerable distances and withstand her blows. Adversity originally triggered his transformations, but he eventually remained transformed permanently. Each transformation further impaired his intelligence, speech and self-control. History:

(She-Hulk V#8 (fb)) - Mark Booth studied biological engineering and worked for a startup company. Although intelligent enough to operate his own laboratory, he often struggled to put his thoughts into words.

(She-Hulk V#8 (fb)) - Mark met April Booth online. They quickly fell in love: April understood him intuitively without requiring him to explain himself, while Mark admired her unconventional thinking and believed she could achieve anything. The couple were married.

(She-Hulk V#8 (fb)) - Mark joined April's company, Booth Cybernetics. When prospective clients mistook him for the brains behind the operations, he always made it a point to give April all the credits. That didn't stop her from feeling overlooked and small, which fed her desire to become big, strong and impossible to ignore.

(She-Hulk V#8 (fb)) - Mark helped April investigate methods of deliberately creating superhuman abilities. They chose gamma mutation and selected She-Hulk as their ideal model because, out of all known gamma-enhanced individuals, Jennifer Walters alone combined strength, intelligence, control and apparent invulnerability. Mark shared his wife's desire for superpowers, hoping to become massively powerful while April intended to continue her normal work with superhuman abilities.

(She-Hulk V#8 (fb) - BTS) - Mark and April hacked Stark Industries and stole a sample of She-Hulk's blood, judging its security easier to defeat than that of Reed Richards' laboratory.

(She-Hulk V#8 (fb)) - Using Jennifer's blood, April developed a gamma serum and insisted on extensive testing before trying it on a live subject. Utterly convinced of his wife's brilliance and hoping to surprise her, Mark secretly injected a laboratory rat. April was furious until they saw that the rat could consciously control its transformation into a powerful green form. Mark was ecstatic, but April warned that the single result proved nothing and that they would have to kill the animal.

(She-Hulk V#8 (fb)) - A news report showing Hulk's destructive rampage made April question their experiment. Mark reassured her that they were more intelligent and disciplined than previous Hulks, confidently declaring that together they would become the best Hulks.

(She-Hulk V#8 (fb)) - Holding April's hand, Mark simultaneously infused himself with their gamma serum. Both initially became green, muscular and lucid, leading him to believe the procedure was a success.

(She-Hulk V#8 (fb)) - Moments later, Mark abruptly enlarged further and became enraged that his skin was not green enough. He flew into a destructive tantrum and smashed their laboratory. Mark initially reverted to human form, but adversity repeatedly triggered new transformations. Each episode left him less intelligent and less recognizably himself, eventually forcing the Booths to sleep apart for April's safety. Mark eventually remained transformed even when calm. April became his primary caregiver and restrained him when he grew frustrated. As his speech and comprehension deteriorated, he responded particularly well to simple rhyming children's stories and repeatedly asked April what happened next.

(She-Hulk V#5 (fb) - BTS) - April took Mark to the park near their home almost every day, the daily ritual helped to keep him calm.

(She-Hulk V#8 (fb) - BTS) - April concluded that She-Hulk's balanced gamma signature could correct their mutations. She also realized that the exiled hero Jack of Hearts could absorb and transfer all the radiation they required. She devised a plan to use him to move gamma energy between bodies (see comments).

(She-Hulk V#2 (fb) - BTS) - Mark and April imprisoned Jack of Hearts in a containment tank filled with Zero Fluid and experimented with his energy-manipulating abilities. Their work reduced Mark's green coloration without restoring his intellect, but Jack escaped before they could complete their plan.

(She-Hulk V#2) - From their hidden laboratory, Mark and April discovered Jack's empty containment tank. They reviewed their surveillance of She-Hulk and continued preparing to obtain the gamma energy they needed.

(She-Hulk V#4 - BTS) - Remaining out of sight, Mark approached Jennifer Walters and Jack of Hearts while they discussed the mystery of Jack's return, his heavy footsteps announcing his presence.

(She-Hulk V#5) - Mark confronted Jack at an outdoor cafe, repeatedly reciting a nursery rhyme about the Jack of Hearts stealing tarts. He attacked Jack and hurled She-Hulk through the cafe when she intervened, continuing the fight until April arrived to calm him down and lead them away.  Some time later, She-Hulk spotted the Booths at a park in Brooklyn, only realizing they were a couple when another regular visitor pointed it out to them.

(She-Hulk V#7) - When Jennifer visited the Booths' home to offer help, Mark appeared behind April and recognized her as "Green." At April's cue, he tackled Jennifer and managed to overpower her. Upon April's request, he carried her into their basement laboratory.

(She-Hulk V#9 - BTS) - Jack of Hearts used his gamma tracer to track the abducted She-Hulk to the Booths' home in Brooklyn.

(She-Hulk V#9) - Mark restrained Jennifer while April prepared to drain her gamma radiation using a Zero Fluid powered harness of her own design. After Jennifer escaped and Jack arrived, Mark fought She-Hulk until April activated her transfer apparatus. Everything went pear-shaped when She-Hulk threw Mark at his wife who accidentally siphoned off Booth's gamma energies into her own body. While Mark was restored to his human form, April continued to mutate and transformed into a massive, cognitively impaired gamma mutate.

(She-Hulk V#9) - Frightened and confused by April's transformation, Mark asked what she had done. After Jack's Zero Energy discharge ended the fight, the transformed April picked Mark up and carried him out of the laboratory.

(Sensational She-Hulk II#2 (fb) - BTS) - Restored to his normal body and intellect, Mark became the primary caregiver for the increasingly irrational April. With his wife's every thought consumed by vengeance against She-Hulk, the Booths devised a new plan to obtain genetic material from Hulk in an attempt to cure her.

(Sensational She-Hulk II#2 - BTS) - Mark and April tracked down Hulk and shadowed his movements. They believed the simple-minded brute was completely unaware of their presence, but Hulk sensed April's gamma signature. Mistaking it for She-Hulk's, he went to New York to ask his cousin to leave him alone.

(Sensational She-Hulk II#2) - Mark wanted to strategically approach Hulk, but he could not stop April from directly confronting both Hulk and She-Hulk. He repeatedly warned his wife that the fight was too dangerous, but April attacked Jennifer and grew even angrier when Hulk tried to leave. However, he returned to fight when April claimed to be the real Hulk. The ensuing fight seemed to end when April buried Hulk beneath a collapsing building, briefly knocking him out.

(Sensational She-Hulk II#3) - As April prepared to beat the unconscious Hulk to death and fought off She-Hulk, Mark used the confusion to extract a tissue sample from Hulk. Jennifer confronted him over this latest violation and reminded him that the Booths had willingly pursued the gamma powers that had harmed so many others. Mark finally accepted that gamma mutation worked safely for no one and offered to cure Jennifer and Hulk after restoring April.

(Sensational She-Hulk II#3) - Hoping to keep Hulk's tissue sample safe, Mark tossed it to April while calling her "honey". April crushed the vial, furious that he continued using the endearment. She openly rejected her husband and her old name, boldly stating she was now known as Anathema. She stormed off, leaving her heartbroken husband behind.

Comments: Created by Rainbow Rowell, Luca Maresca.

Tragic as the story of Mark and April Booth is, it's hard to feel sorry for them. They seemed to be truly in love and were willing to do anything to make each other happy, but despite their best efforts Anathema rejected both his help and their marriage.

It remains unrevealed how the Booths lured Jack of Hearts from space into their Brooklyn basement or where they obtained the Zero Fluid needed to contain him. Mark's current whereabouts after April abandoned also remain unrevealed, perhaps he is still chasing her. Also... they both had the same last name before they got married? I know boots come in pairs, but what are the odds!
