Powers/Abilities: The Black Knight wore a suit of armor, apparently a mixture of plate on the head, legs and torso and scale mail on the arms, presumably for ease of movement. This was bulletproof at least to common caliber handguns. He also wielded a sword.

   Logan could not speak or read Spanish.

History:
(Annie Oakley (UK)#7 (fb) - BTS) - An unscrupulous owlhoot hiding behind a semi-respectable facade, "Lucky" Logan heard rumors of a old Spanish treasure hidden somewhere on Mary Hawkins' Dude Ranch, located just outside of the town of Buena Vista. Logan created the persona of the Black Knight, an armored villain who terrorized the guests staying at Hawkin's ranch, driving away customers in the hopes of convincing Hawkins to sell the ranch to him.

(Annie Oakley (UK)#7) - After hearing of the Knight's attacks Sheriff Pecos Smith and his friend Annie Oakley rode out to the ranch to investigate. Shortly after they arrived the Black Knight struck again, riding up and threatening the guests. One guest tried to shoot the Knight, but the bullet bounced harmlessly off his armor, and the Knight struck the man down with the hilt of his sword, before making his escape.

(Annie Oakley (UK)#7 - BTS) - Lucky quickly changed out of the armor so he could return unseen and unsuspected to the ranch.

(Annie Oakley (UK)#7) - While most of the other guests rushed to pack and depart, Lucky played the role of one of the few visitors brave enough to remain. In front of Annie and Pecos he approached Mary and offered to buy the ranch for $5000. When she asked why he'd do so with the threat of the Black Knight hanging over the place, Lucky insisted he didn't give two hoots for the villain and claimed he'd convert the place for sheep herding. Telling her to think it over, he made to depart, but just before he left Mary decided that she didn't want to sell, since she had lived there her entire life and couldn't bear to part with he ranch. As Lucky walked away, a newly arrived guest, Professor Pycroft, walked up to Mary curious to understand why everyone was talking about a medieval knight in the area (see comments).

(Annie Oakley (UK)#7 - BTS) - Lucky slunk off, changed back into his armor, and swiftly returned to the ranch unseen, lurking where he could eavesdrop on Mary and Pycroft.

(Annie Oakley (UK)#7) - Pycroft asked Mary if there was anything of historical interest connected to the ranch that might have drawn the Knight's attention, prompting her to tell him of an old treasure map that had been in her family for years, though she added that none of them took it seriously. With Annie and Pecos also present, Mary dug the map out and showed it to Pycroft, who expressed surprise, claiming that the map looked to be authentic, purporting to give the location of the treasure hidden on Mary's property. Hearing this, the Knight revealed his presence and demanded they hand over the map. Pecos tried to shoot the intruder, but again the bullets ricocheted harmlessly off the sturdy armor and its helmet; however Annie was a more accurate shot, and though her shot to the Knight's hand didn't penetrate the armor, it did make him reflexively drop his sword. With his foe disarmed, Pecos tried to go hand to hand, but was stunned instantly by the Knight's mailed fist. Snatching up his sword as well as the professor to translate the purloined map, the Knight rode off, soon pursued by Pecos and Annie. Following the map's directions Pecos and his captive soon reached a cave and discovered within a bunch of old chests and some old bones lying near them. With no further need for his prisoner, the Knight was about to cleave the professor's skull with his sword when Pecos rushed in and began to grapple with the villain. However the Sheriff again struggled to harm his armored foe, until Annie, seeing his predicament, snuck up behind the Knight and struck the back of his helmet with one of the larger bones. Momentarily stunned, the knight was thrown down by Pecos and his vizor sprung open, revealing his true identity. With his helmet now fallen off, Lucky got back to his feet to see that the chests, which he had knocked open when he fell, were empty. Disheartened that all his planning had been for nothing, Lucky fell to his knees, while Pecos ruminated that the treasure must have been discovered long ago, hence why Mary's family ignored the map. Pecos informed Lucky that he'd be going to jail, but Lucky was unconcerned, insisting that the sheriff had little on him, so he'd only get a few months, adding philosophically that at least he hadn't wasted money buying the land. However at that moment Pycroft spoke up, revealing that the bones littering the cave floor were from some prehistoric creature and would be worth a fortune to a museum. Now upset, Lucky was taken to jail by Pecos.

   The UK reprints of Marvel's Annie Oakley series were published by L.Miller and Son, the same company also publishing Marvelman at the time. After a few issue of purely reprints they began including new stories produced by Marvelman's creator Mick Anglo, or more accurately the studio of writers and artists he maintained.

   There were a few inconsistencies between the UK and US tales, notably that Sheriff "Idaho" Smith was called Sheriff "Pecos" Smith in the Black Knight story. However, I don't feel that's enough to even raise the possibility that the UK stories aren't in the same continuity. Just ask Peter Palmer, a.k.a. Superman!

   Though Lucky Logan's profession isn't confirmed, his comment that he "knows good sheep grazing land when he sees it" and that he'd convert the Dude Ranch to that purpose suggests he might have been a sheep farmer at one point. However, that might also have just been a cover to give him an apparent reason to want to buy the land, hiding his true motives.

   Lucky offered $5000 for the ranch; Google informs me that $5000 in 1880 (the time the story would have been set, give or take a decade) would be worth around $164000 today. A not inconsiderable sum, but not nearly a fair price for an entire ranch with all its land.

   A learned man like Pycroft showing up and thus prompting Mary to dig out the map might seem like a huge coincidence, until you realize that what prompted him to visit the ranch in the first place might well have been the story of a medieval knight being seen. We don't get told what Pycroft is a professor of, but given his obvious interest in both the knight, the map, the treasure and the dinosaur bones, I'd venture history or a related subject.

   2021's Black Knight: Curse of the Ebony Blade#4 reveals there was a Wild West-era Black Knight who was apparently a sheriff. While he'd have been active during the same general era as Lucky Logan, and they do both have mustaches, I don't think that this was Lucky. There's no suggestion that the sword he has is the Ebony Blade or indeed anything other than a regular sword, and BK:CotEB makes it clear that the Black Knights depicted there were all good men until the Ebony Blade's curse corrupted them. Lucky, who was willing to cleave an elderly professor's head open simply because he wasn't useful any more definitely doesn't fit the "started with good intentions" phase of that character arc, but neither does he seem like a man under a curse. He's just an immoral and greedy jerk. And of course, in the real world the odds that the writers of BK:CotEB even knew about Lucky and meant their Black Knight to be him is beyond slim. Still, retcons can and do happen, so who knows what a later writer who is aware of both characters might do?
