(Cowgirl Romances I#28/4 (fb) - BTS) - Buzz Bellew Jr. was the son of a famous marshal who served in Deadrock, Arizona. Buzz's mother couldn't stand living in the west and moved to the east shortly before Buzz was born. Not long after this, Buzz Bellew Sr. was shot and killed; his killer wasn't identified. Consequently, Buzz Jr. grew up never knowing his father. During the U.S. Civil War, Buzz served as a soldier, which gave him a distaste for violence. After the war, he became a writer.
(Cowgirl Romances I#28/4) - Now a grown man and seeking material for a book about his father, Buzz visited Deadrock twenty years after his father's death to see his father's old friend Bill Easton, the sheriff of Deadrock. Bill's daughter Mary fell in love with Buzz the instant she saw him. Sheriff Easton told Buzz his father was killed with a Leroy 1812 pistol, which was an unusual weapon, but the killer remained at large. Sheriff Easton was disappointed to learn Buzz was a writer and even more so when Buzz said he didn't believe in gun play or violence, believing that reason and logic were the tools needed in a conflict.
Buzz told Mary he could see her father was disappointed in him; Mary observed that the name "Buzz Bellew" was still a strong one in Deadrock and asked him to behave as though he were a tough gunfighter to help scare away some of the cowboys who were tormenting her father. Buzz agreed and donned a cowboy's outfit, brandishing a gun on his hip. When cowboy Clint Hastings hesitated at confronting Buzz, one of Clint's friends Jim Meany called him a coward; Clint shot Meany in the arm. Seeing this, Buzz froze up and the other townspeople watching were shocked that Buzz did nothing to deal with Clint. When Clint called Buzz "yellow," Buzz retorted he saw no sense in shooting or violence. Mary thought Buzz needed something to make him angry enough to spur into action but Buzz disputed that.
Buzz met with the town doctor who had removed the bullet Clint shot at Jim Meany and identified it as the same make that killed Buzz Bellew Sr. Hearing this, Buzz became grim and determined; setting out into the street, Buzz confronted Clint Hastings. When Clint started to make fun of him, Buzz drew his gun and shot a bullet through Clint's cigarette. Buzz asked what kind of gun Clint carried, which another man identified as a Leroy 1812. Clint admitted he was the one who killed Buzz's father and shot at Buzz but missed him. Clint jumped on his horse and was about to take another shot at Buzz when Buzz fired a single shot at Clint, hitting him directly in the heart.
Buzz realized he'd avenged his father and that it had seemed natural for him to fight back against Clint. Later, on their way home, Buzz asked Mary to marry him and she consented.

Bill Easton was the sheriff of Deadrock, Arizona. His daughter Mary was the town librarian. Bill was friends with Buzz Bellew Sr.; when Buzz was killed, Bill identified the gun responsible as a Leroy 1812 pistol, but he didn't find the killer. Bill was becoming too old to serve as sheriff in Deadrock because the men didn't respect him as Clint Hastings would fire his gun at his feet to make Bill dance. Sheriff Easton hoped Buzz Bellew Jr. would help him clean up Deadrock and was disappointed when Buzz Jr. turned out to be a writer who had no love for violence. However, when Buzz learned Clint Hastings was the man who killed his father, he killed Clint. Sheriff Easton said it was right that someone with the name Buzz Bellew avenged his father's death.

Mary Easton was the librarian in Deadrock, Arizona. She was the daughter of Sheriff Bill Easton. When Buzz Bellew came to Deadrock, Mary fell in love with him at first sight. Although her father was disappointed to find Buzz didn't believe in gun play, Mary admired Buzz for being independent. Mary remained supportive of Buzz even as other people in town jeered for his lack of action. Ultimately Buzz slew Clint Hastings, his father's killer, then asked Mary to marry him.

He had no respect for lawmen; years ago he slew Buzz Bellew Sr.; years later, he tormented Sheriff Bill Easton, firing his gun at his feet to make him dance. When Buzz Bellew Jr. came to Deadrock, Clint was reluctant to stand up to him. When his friend Jim Meany called him a coward, Clint shot Meany in the arm. When Buzz refused to interfere with Clint, this convinced the people of Deadrock that Buzz was nothing like his father. However, when Buzz learned the bullet in Meany's arm came from a Leroy 1812 he confronted Clint. Clint admitted he killed Buzz's father and tried to kill Buzz but missed him. Clint jumped on his horse for another attack but Buzz shot him in the heart, killing Clint instantly.
