History:
(Kid Colt Outlaw I#113) - Bull Barton led his gang aboard a train that
was transporting a large payroll. He and his gang disarmed the train's
engineer and guard but the roving outlaw Kid Colt had seen the gang's
attack on the train and boarded the vehicle to stop them. No match for
the Kid's cunning and marksmanship, Bull and his gang left the train
empty-handed, fleeing on their horses before they could be captured.
One of the passengers on the train was territorial governor McDonald Morgan, who offered Colt a pardon if he could go one month without using his guns. Colt agreed to the bargain and gave his colts to Morgan before leaving the train. As Colt journeyed down the trail on his steed Steel, Barton and his gang ambushed Kid Colt as revenge. When they saw Colt had no guns, they engaged him in hand-to-hand combat. Restraining him through superior numbers, Barton assumed Colt had robbed the train himself and demanded Colt surrender the payroll to him. Colt called Barton crazy and Barton was about to shoot him when one of Barton's gang rode up and informed Barton he had being tracking Colt since he left the train and Colt had not been carrying anything from the train.
Barton resolved to lead another attack on the train for the payroll, planning to take a pass over a mountain and thereby beat the train to the town of Las Notches. Barton fired his shotgun at Kid Colt, injuring his right arm then led his gang to Las Notches.
As Barton and his gang lay in wait in Las Notches, Kid Colt caught up to the last man in the gang and defeated him in hand-to-hand combat then took his pistol. Only able to use his left arm, Colt used his wits to kick up a dust storm with Steel to make himself a harder target. Colt outfought Barton and his gang, shooting the guns from most of their hands. Barton attempted to ambush Colt from behind and shoot him in the back but Colt fired a shot under his shoulder that hit the gun from Barton's hand-- without being able to see Bull. As the train arrived, McDonald Morgan ordered the guard to arrest Bull Barton and deliver him to the county seat for trial.
(Kid Colt Outlaw I#118 (fb) - BTS) - Bull Barton was sent to the state prison and put on a chain gang. There, he befriended two other men who had been caught by Kid Colt: the Scorpion and Dr. Danger.
(Kid Colt Outlaw I#118) - When Kid Colt turned himself over to bounty hunter Fred Yates, he was sent to the same chain gang as Bull, Dr. Danger and the Scorpion. One day while the chain gang were out breaking rocks, Bull, Dr. Danger and the Scorpion talked about their plans to break out of prison that evening and deal with Kid Colt on their way out. Colt overheard them and Bull quickly attacked Colt, trying to silence him before the guard noticed them fighting. When the guard saw Bull and Colt fighting, he came over to break them up but Dr. Danger tripped the guard and took his gun. While the other guards started to round up the chain gang, Dr. Danger shot Colt with the guard's gun and removed the manacles on his, Bull and the Scorpion's legs using the gun. Commandeering the guards' horse-drawn wagon, the three convicts fled.
Fleeing across the border, the three convicts entered a saloon for a drink, where they happened to encounter Fred Yates and his girlfriend Susan. Susan tried to encourage Fred to capture the three men and collect the rewards but Dr. Danger intimidated him and took his money belt, discovering the vast sum of money he had received for capturing Kid Colt. When they learned he was the man who caught Kid Colt, they declared they didn't like bounty hunters and took his gun then drove him out of the saloon. However, Kid Colt had survived the shot Dr. Danger fired at him and pursued the trio to the town. The three men drew their guns on Colt but he fired three quick shots that disarmed them. Tying the three men to the wagon they had stolen, Colt drove them back across the border into the arms of the guards who had been trying to recapture them.
