History: (Ruse#4 (fb) - BTS) - Queen Victoria was secretly part of the network of agents of Simon Archard, part-time specialists in the fields that the brilliant detective himself had yet to master.
(Ruse#1 (fb) - BTS) - Archard only spoke of Victoria to his other associates as "Agent V." His assistant/partner Emma Bishop was determined to wear Archard down and learn the true identity of "V".
(Ruse#3 (fb) - BTS) - Archard's former mentor-turned-criminal mastermind, Malcolm Lightbourne, secretly consolidated all casinos and game parlors in Partington. Exploiting the love Victoria's son Bertie had for gambling, Lightbourne had his employees rig the games to drive Bertie deep into debt while also using him to draw out his influential friends and relatives. Within months, Lightbourne had the high society under his thumb, with enough blackmail to jail not only Bertie but half of the extended royal family.
(Ruse#4 (fb) - BTS) - Leveraging his hold on Bertie, Lightbourne moved into the royal palace by posing as "Dr. Rey", a live-in physician for the Queen. Lightbourne presented Victoria with the blackmail that would end her sovereignty, and she made with him the ultimate bet. Should his former pupil Simon Archard uncover the plot and bring him to justice, Lightbourne would turn the blackmail over; otherwise Victoria would grant him the entirety of the Princely States of India in exchange for it. "Dr. Rey" then used his influence to sequester the Queen from everyone, including the servants, by claiming that she was suffering from an undisclosed illness and had to be quarantined.
(Ruse#1 - BTS) - For a week straight, Simon Archard received daily special correspondence, which Emma Bishop assumed to be the messages from Agent V. Simon informed her that they were in fact not.
(Ruse#2 - BTS) - After Maddie Perkins, one of Archard's agents, was killed by Lightbourne, Archard called all his current and past associates to the safety of his headquarters. Emma noticed that Agent V was not among them, and Simon assured her that V was safe from danger.
(Ruse#4 (fb) - BTS) - Agent V had in fact not responded or communicated at all, leading Simon to discreetly inquire about the Queen and learn about her "illness." Recognizing Lightbourn's involvement, Archard publicly faked his own death.
(Ruse#4) - Eight weeks into her "quarantine," Victoria noticed that the normally calm Lightbourne had become visibly unsettled. He informed the Queen of Archard's "demise," aware that it was but a trick by his pupil to change the game in which he found himself a piece. Victoria tried to call the bet off, but Lightbourne refused, instead saying that they were now in the denouement of it.
(Ruse#4) - Simon Archard stopped Lightbourne and came to see the Queen, introducing her to Emma Bishop as Agent V. Victoria told Simon the details of the bet, but there was still a matter of the blackmail. Archard used his cane to strike at Rembrandt's Self-Portrait in a Flat Cap, revealing it to be a forgery along with the rest of the Palace collection: using his access, Lightbourne had replaced the paintings with counterfeits that had the blackmail stored within. The Queen did not know how to thank Simon, and he asked for knighthood. Victoria replied that it would be politically difficult because of Archard's open hostility to Parliament. Simon agreed and instead asked for a state funeral in service of Her Majesty for the three of her fellow agents killed by Lightbourne.
(Ruse#4 (fb) - BTS) - The Queen later informed Archard that Lightbourne's body was not found at the place where he fell seemingly to his death.
Comments: Created by Mark Waid, Minck Oosterveer, and Mirco Pierfederici. The 2011 Ruse
miniseries was published by Marvel under the CrossGen branding
alongside two other series, Sigil and Mystic, in an
attempt to revive the CrossGen properties acquired by the Walt Disney
Company following the collapse and bankruptcy of CrossGen.
Each of the three titles differed from their
predecessors, published by CrossGen itself between 2000-2004 as part
of the shared "Sigilverse" (Reality-21371).
Sigil changed the protagonist from
Samandahl Rey, a male soldier fighting an interstellar war in the far
future, to Samantha Rey, a 16-year-old girl from present-day South
Carolina.
Mystic changed the setting from the planet
Ciress to planet Verne and the two protagonists, originally sisters
from respectable society, were now orphans without so much as last
name.
Written by its original creator Mark Waid, Ruse
resembled its CrossGen incarnation the most out of the relaunched
titles by far. Still, changes were done to make the story more
grounded. The setting was changed from the Victorian-like Arcadia, a
planet with nine continents, to the actual Victorian England, while
Emma Bishop lost her secret superpowers and was now explicitly human.
The only fantastical element remaining was the city of Partington
itself.
In the 2001 CrossGen series, Partington is but one of many fantastical names given to familiar-looking locations. It is notable for its living gargoyles, which are treated as common pests, to the point where fear of them is considered odd. In the 2011 Marvel series, Partington apparently replaced London as the capital of the British Empire. The artwork prominently features iconic London locations, with some such as the Westminster Station directly identified by name. Queen Victoria's Palace however, despite looking exactly like Buckingham, is not named as such on-page, and this profile withholds the name as well, on the chance that some places in Partington might have different names after all.
The 2011 CrossGen revival was meant to continue with the subsequent miniseries Route 666 and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, only to be canceled following the low sales of the initial titles. The original Sigilverse finally made its connection with the Marvel Multiverse in 2025, with Giselle Villard from Mystic (2000) appearing in Battleworld#2.
