History:
(Amazing Spider-Man VI#31 (fb) - BTS) - Perry Thomas suffered from
extreme idolatry when it came to superheroes. Fixating on the Fantastic
Four, he made it his life's mission to show up at their fights hoping he
would get rescued. After a while, the Thing caught on and told Thomas in
no uncertain terms that he needed a new hobby. Thomas got so angry that
he went to court and secured a restraining order against the foursome.
(Amazing Spider-Man VI#31) - Now obsessed with Spider-Man, Thomas spent
a good deal of his time rushing across Manhattan to be present for the
wallcrawler's battles. As a result, he almost got trampled by the Rhino,
but Spider-Man swung by and carried him to safety at the last possible
moment. Overcome with fear, excitement and adrenaline, Thomas walked off
in a blissful mood. A few weeks later, he got in the way when Spider-Man
fought Sandman, the Lizard and Vulture. During the last two rescues, he
began to recognize Thomas.
(Amazing Spider-Man VI#31 - BTS) - Johnny Storm happened to watch news
footage of Spider-Man rescuing Thomas, making him realize the man had
found a new 'victim'. Johnny sought out Spider-Man to tell him about
Perry Thomas' addiction to getting rescued by superheroes, with Storm
explaining the FF felt used and embarrassed. Spider-Man was more
concerned with Perry's safety, fearing he might get himself hurt. Due to
the restraining order, the Thing couldn't have another talk with the
man, but Johnny had an idea.
(Amazing Spider-Man VI#31) - When
Perry heard Electro was tearing up Soho, he ran to make his way there,
only to be stopped by Johnny Storm wearing a very cheap, schlubby
Spider-Man costume. Perry got deeply offended when the fake Spidey told
him the real one was too busy saving the city. He rejected the offer to
be rescued by the impostor instead. Perry immediately lost all respect
for Spider-Man, believing he was stuck up and pretentious for not
bothering to save him in person. He angrily walked off, calling his
former idol 'disgusting Spider-has-been!' On his way home, Perry found a
new victim when he spotted Daredevil bouncing across the rooftops.
Comments: Created by Albert Monteys.
"The curious case of Perry Thomas" is only the second work that Spanish-born comics creator Albert Monteys has done for Marvel to date, the first being a single page in Fantastic Four Anniversary Tribute #1. Wish he would do more, the notion of an obsessed fan of superheroes addicted to getting rescued is a very original one.
