History:
(Marvel Apes I#3/1 - BTS) - During the Second World War, mechanical apedroid the Simian Torch and his sidekick Toro (Thomas Raymond) became part of a group of super-powered heroes united to combat Axis threats on a global scale. Known as the Invaders, Simian Torch and Toro joined Captain America, Bucky, Namor the Sub-Mariner, and the Red Raven, becoming one of the earliest organized super teams and playing a key role in the Allied war effort.
(Marvel Apes I#1/3) - During one mission, the Simian Torch joined Namor the Sub-Mariner and Captain America in stopping a u-boat full of Nazi's. Their actions were closely observed by the Watcher, an ancient cosmic being who observes and records events throughout the universe without interfering.
(Marvel Apes I#3/1 (fb) - BTS) - The Simian Torch and the Invaders received a distress call from Captain America who, with Bucky by his side, had come to blows with Baron Zemook in a secret North Sea base.
(Marvel Apes I#3/1 - BTS) - While the Invaders made their way to rescue their friends, Captain America was attacked and even replaced by Nazi vampire Baron Blood whose genetic makeup was affected by drinking Rogers' supersoldier-infused blood. Blood had donned Captain America's costume and Bucky was turned into a vampire.
(Marvel Apes I#3/1) - Arrived in Zemook's North Sea base, the Simian Torch and the Invaders were taken by surprise as Toro, Namor and Red Raven were easily overpowered and turned into vampires. Unable to turn the apedroid into a vampire the now vampiric Invaders turned on their friend and after one of the most brutal fights of the whole war destroyed the Simian Torch.
(Marvel Apes I#3/1 - BTS) - When Sgt. Furry and his Howler Commandos entered the base two days later they said it looked like it had been fire-bombed worse than Dresden with only several pieces of the Simian Torch scattered on the battlefield.
Comments: Created by Karl Kesel and Tom Peyer.
The Marvel Apes limited series (2008) was conceived as a playful companion to the earlier Marvel Zombies phenomenon. Following the unexpected commercial success of Zombies, Marvel looked to replicate the formula by reimagining its superheroes in another offbeat, high-concept alternate reality. Writer Karl Kesel, inspired by Silver Age whimsy and the classic "What If?" tradition, pitched a world where Marvel's heroes and villains were evolved primates rather than humans. The project was greenlit as a four-issue miniseries, launching with a tongue-in-cheek promotional campaign that leaned into its absurdity while still delivering a surprisingly dark, satirical storyline. The series spawned several tie-ins and one-shots, positioning the Ape-Verse as both a parody of and homage to Marvel's multiverse storytelling.
Earth-8101 is the main Marvel Apes reality, but there are three others as well:
- Earth-81218, possible future of Earth-8101 set in the year 2099.
- Earth-90543, monkey Speedball was send back to his world and branded a traitor by the Ape-Vengers. This was a bad dream of the Gibbon.
- Earth-95019, diverged from Earth-8101 when zombies invaded their world. The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z Update #5 indicates that the timelines designated Earth-95019 and Earth-21050 were seemingly erased when Earth-616's Gorilla Girl went back to the moment the portal was opened and destroyed it.
