History:

(Wolverine II#1 - BTS) - Lee Kwan Pen was a pilot, working for the Asian airline Sovereign Airways.

(Wolverine II#1 (fb) - BTS) - While piloting a flight with a hundred-eighty passengers, Sovereign flight 49 was hijacked and forced to land on the small Indonesian island of Telambang. The culprit was the so-called "prince of pirates" Banapur Khan. Khan had been contracted by the Japanese Cult of the Black Blade to acquire the Muramasa Sword and learned that Noburo Kojima, personal secretary of Mariko Yoshida, was flying with Sovereign Airways.

Upon the forced landing, Pen's passengers and cabin crew met a horrible fate as Khan's crew killed the men and kept the women aside in the hopes of later raping and/or selling them into slavery. Pen was strung up by his arms when Khan prepared to murder the man with his sword.

(Wolverine II#1) - Just as Khan tried to murder Captain Lee Kwam Pen the man managed to free his legs and kick Khan in the gut. Khan's crew watched as he fell to the floor, almost receiving a stomp to the face by Pen. Khan then grabbed the man by his tie and beheaded him much to the horror of the surviving women who were made to watch the spectacle. Not soon after, Wolverine arrived and successfully slew Khan's crew. When one of Pen's stewardess' shot and seemingly killed Khan she did so in Pen's honor.

Comments: Created by Chris Claremont, John Buscema, and Al Williamson.

Although unconfirmed it seems likely Sovereign flight 49's flight-route was from Japan to Madripoor (which is close to Indonesia). Khan's target, Noburo Kojima, could easily have been captured by the Cult of the Black Blade while in Japan, making it likely he'd left Japan before they could act. The remainder of the Wolverine story-line plays out in Madripoor which is very close to Indonesia where Khan had his base of operations.

Telambang was described as being a small island in the heart of the Indonesian archipelago, it is however only exists in the Marvel Universe.
