History:
(Mighty Mouse#5/2 (fb) - BTS) - Established author
Clive Barkman decided to try out writing film reviews, given how their
vicious and dismembering nature were similar to his novels. Taking the
name Bark Man, he set his sights on the new movie sequel Bat-Bat 2
featuring the heroic Bat-Bat.
(Mighty Mouse#5/2) - Before its premiere, Bark Man
warned the hero he would deliberately gave the film bad reviews.
Panicked, Bat-Bat and sidekick Tick went through his large rogues
gallery, seeking likely candidates for the threat. All the while, Bark
Man (disguised in an anthrotoon dog costume) followed in the background
with placards questioning Bark Man's true identity. Bat-Bat's search yielded
no results but noted Bark Man in the periphery. Eventually, Bat-Bat
confronted the one dogging his trail. Barkman revealed his
identity but no motive, other than to raise hell with dark reviews.
Barkman's reviews had a quick effect and the movie folded in two weeks.
Barkman disappeared, probably targeting another film venture.
Meanwhile, entertainment journalist Rona Rabbit
interviewed Bat-Bat about his film flop, and he replied he would turn
to television.
Comments: Created by Mike Kanterovich, Tom Brevoort, Mike Kazaleh.
With Bat-Bat turning to TV (and an image of Mighty
Mouse on the screen), the inference is that he would go to the "Mighty
Mouse: The New Adventures" cartoon, which ran from 1987-1988 and
introduced Bat-Bat. As such, this is a sort of prequel to the cartoon
in a comic that served as a sequel to the 1987-1988 animated series.
Clive Barkman is, of course, a reference to the legendary master of horror fiction Clive Barker, notable for his Hellraiser stories and filmwork. "Bark Man" may also be a (coincidental) reference to the horror film and character "Darkman" (1990) by Sam Raimi.
His pseudonym of Barkman was later twice spelled
Barkman (one word), matching his surname.
Profile by Grendel Prime.
CLARIFICATIONS
:
Clive Barkman has no known connections to:
Rona Rabbit was an entertainment journalist for the
TV show "Entertainment Too-Lite". She briefly interviewed the heroic
but overconfident Bat-Bat about his sequel movie and was there when
Bat-Bat first received the threatening letter from Bark Man to kill the
movie with bad reviews. Later, after the film had closed, she again
interviewed Bat-Bat given his brief fame was gone, and the hero said he
would try for TV instead.
